What? the original 'gave it a sad tone', it's a ridiculously sad song in a minor key, there's now way around that:)
The Gary Jules version just slowed the tempo a bit, which this version copied.

eh.. sounds like a rip-off of Gary Jules version (which I know is a remake of the original, but it was the first to give it a sad tone- that I know of)

Oh come on, the Gary Jules version is at least sincere. The 80's new wave people were always too emotionally disconnected for my taste but the more popular, toned down take by Jules was quite emotionally honest.
