There's something about the sound of a down shifting indy car or F1 car that I love, especially when it's followed by the speed gearing up right after.

He went through the entire vid without mentioning Williams Hybrid Power, the spin-off from the flywheel storage developed for the Williams F1 car in 2008/2009:



Unfortunately it couldn't be scaled up to the increased KERS output required for the 2011 season, at least not in a way that fit in an F1 car, so Williams now run the same electric KERS as everybody else. The flywheels are used in other racing series and in road cars though, as mentioned in their vid.

One very obvious difference between the prototype bicycle system in this vid and the WHP version is that they are using relatively lightweight composite flywheels and then spinning them to speeds that would tear apart the car flywheel from this vid, typically 20,000 to 50,000 rpm. This greatly increases the amount of energy storage available which increases linearly with mass, but with the square of rotational velocity.

Thanks In many ways it was a groundbreaking car, and quite a beautiful one. Add some wings and it would look right at home amongst much later F1 cars Lets just overlook the safety side though...

Well this one is the weakest of the pit stop features, but I liked the first three and posted this on the back of liking the others more!

The teams are all so secretive that they would never make the interesting technical discussion that we want... if you take the Sauber cutaway series for example, gearboxes would be an obvious episode to cover, but for contractual reasons they can't show us the inside of their gearbox because it comes from another team! These videos are the best that I can find, but unfortunately most F1 fans will have seen them as filler pieces during the race coverage

I do feel that I have failed in tagging and channel assignment though, can you suggest what I should have put to avoid wasting your time? The more technical ones will always be in the engineering channel, and the less technical ones will be in sports/wheels.

Cool, thanks for the link I watched "On the beach" (1959, the original one) for the F1 car, for Fred Astaire, and as a related film to Dr. Strangelove (in that order). The dvd cover of Grand Prix looks familiar, I have a horrible feeling I may have bought it and then never watched it... and if so, I will fix that over the christmas break!

Yeah, it was meant to be F1 cars; but Bernie Ecclestone (F1 commercial rights holder) decided against it, as he thought Stallone would give F1 a bad name.

He was right: It earned seven nominations at the 22nd Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Couple (Burt Reynolds and Sylvester Stallone) and twice for Worst Supporting Actor (Reynolds and Stallone), with Estella Warren winning Worst Supporting Actress (also for Planet of the Apes).

Here is an Excelent Racing movie: Grand Prix (1966)

It won the Academy Award Oscar for: Best Effects / Sound Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Sound in 1967.

It's the only Official F1 movie. The sound is quite incredibly. There is a scene in the movie; as they race around the streets of Monaco, with a Panavision 65mm camera strapped to the hood of the car.
