Thanks for the *promote

There haven't been enough movies featuring racing cars, and even more so for F1. The French film Taxi (or taxi driver, or something like that) purported to have F1 cars, but they looked more like F3000 to me, there were a few others spread over many years... and then there's Rush and the Senna film all at once - life is good

Wasn't the Stallone one featuring Indy cars?

Pfft. Looks like an unrealistic depiction of Formula One motor sport.

Where is Sylvester Stallone, doing a 500 meter power drift. Where he picked up 3 nickels on the track, with the back tire; on an oval racing track (it's a mandatory part of F1 qualifying; since the great evening wear debacle ("wardrobe malfunction incident"), to weed out slow drivers).

I guess I'll *promote. No big whoop; wanna fight about it?

When pit stops go dramatically wrong

ZappaDanMan says...

Luckly there was no other race cars coming down the pitlane. See the snap reaction of the wheel gun guys on the far side, ran straight into the driving lane (I think this was the F1 era, before pit lane speed limiters).

After an investigation by 'Intertechnique' at Benetton's team factory, FIA (the sports ruling body) revealed that the team had been using an illegal fuel valve, without a fuel filter. This pumped fuel into the car 12.5% faster than a normal, legal fuel valve that had a filter.

Edit: Just checked that in 1994: Pit lane speed limited to 80km/h in practice, 120 km/h in the race. Fire-protective clothing for all refuelling crews Burns treatment material in each pit obligatory. Still, I wouldn't want to be hit by a F1 car at 120kph.

Four Second Pit Stop

There hasn't been refuelling in F1 for years, and yes, a 4 second stop is considered pretty poor. Most are around three seconds, with mclaren leading the way with a 2.4 second stop last race.

Wot, no refuelling? No fun! I should watch a race and see what else has changed.

Lots. For example, Red Bull is a top-tier team now...oh, and F1 cars are all hybrids now (kinda).

Answer me one question. Given the luck and privilege of his life, how many of you, given the same good fortune, could not do what he does? Given the time and money, would you not indulge in fun pursuits? Hell, i'd love to learn how to fly a jet or helicopter. I'd love the fame to be invited to drive an F1 car. This is not envy talking, it is reality. Best of luck to him. But, please, don't tell me he is special. Of course his fans will say he is supremely talented..Hmm, ok.

If I had his money, I'd buy one of these

He reached a top speed of 181 mph (291 km/h) - just 4 mph off the top speed of his instructor and 13-time Grand Prix winner, David Coulthard'

Now what? Is that supposed to impress me? What a useless fact. So he went 180mph on a long straight. Provide lap times in comparison, that would be someting like 1:00min (Pro) vs. 2:00min (Tom Thetan Cruise). Also i don't think they're doing themselves a favor in promoting F1 if they create the impression anyone could drive a F1 car.

You have to have unbelievable reaction times to race F1 cars. I'd imagine regular slow life must be pretty boring to these super humans.

One common thing I've noticed when reading interviews is that they tend to drive really boring cars. When you're used to driving at those speeds every road legal car will feel boring no matter what, so you might as well be practical.

But yeah, those things are simply astoundingly fast. Even in simulators you first think you're going fast driving a stock car, then you try a GT car and the stock ones feel like they're standing still, and then you jump in an F1 and GT cars feel just as slow. And in reality the differences are even bigger. The fastest lap in the 2010 GT1 race at Spa was 2:17.605 (qualifying time). Same year Mark Webber managed 1:45.778 in his Red Bull. Same layout. Over half a minute over 4.352 miles, the F1 car would lap the GT car every four and a half laps or so.
