Racist Australian Senator egged by hero kid

ChaosEngine says...

@newtboy that is exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of.

As for the kid (whose real name is Will Connolly) the defence fund is now around $30000, and part of the fund is earmarked for "buying more eggs". Will has stated he intends to donate most of the money to victim support*, once again being an absolutely top bloke. He's already been jokingly nominated for "Honorary New Zealander of the year".

Also to put his attack into context... in terms of victims per capita, if this had happened in the US, it would be the statistical equivalent of 9/11.

*there has already been nearly NZ$5m raised for the victims. https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/christchurch-shooting-victims-fund

New Zealand issues ‘new’ world map to #GetNZontheMap

How funny. When I was there in the 80's, I bought a map just like that from the totally insane Wizard of Christchurch. It didn't say middle earth, but it was upside down and New Zealand centric.

Why Brutalism is the hottest trend in web design

ChaosEngine says...

So to address the actual video/concept....

First up, brutalist architecture is fucking awful. There was a bunch of it in Christchurch and if the earthquake did one good thing, it was to get rid of most of those god-awful buildings.

Second, the web isn't about words; it's about information.
How that information is conveyed depends on the target audience and the information being presented.

Sometimes the information is simple and the target audience is actually a machine, in which case we have things like REST and SOAP.

Other times the information is complex, and best represented visually. Can anyone honestly tell me that a site like this (http://thetruesize.com) would be better brutalised?

That's not to say there aren't problems with web bloat. Of course there are. But let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Earthquake Liquefaction Example

teebeenz says...

For those who are wondering of the actual effects that this causes in a earthquake. Water and Sand get forced up. After the last big quake in christchurch the water was upto my knees in about 2minutes. Thick sand/water mix covered everything. Pipes below the ground were often forced up and out, and houses sunk into the ground. Sinkholes, uneven ground, damages roads and footpaths. Its a pretty nasty effect.... and thats without the quakes force alone.

Cows Stranded After New Zealand 7.8 Earthquake

Baristan says...

The site you linked to looks to be the best authority for data on the quake. They don't mention anywhere which scale they use. I doubt they would still be using the Richter scale, but it is a possibility. The quake very well could be 7.5Mw and the USGS is using less accurate data/modals to arrive at 7.8Mw.

...

After further investigating I don't think GeoNet has a clue which scale they use. On their history page they alternate using Mw,Ml,Ms.

using Ms value as M
http://info.geonet.org.nz/display/quake/M+7.1%2C+Arthur%27s+Pass%2C+9+March+1929

using Mw value as M
http://info.geonet.org.nz/display/quake/M+7.1%2C+Inangahua%2C+24+May+1968

using Ml value as M
http://info.geonet.org.nz/display/quake/M+6.3%2C+Christchurch%2C+22+February+2011

Would be nice if they would state and be consistent on which scale they use for magnitude. The Eiffel tower is both 276 and 302 tall.

Dude's a goddamn legend. After the Christchurch earthquakes, they played a fund-raising gig in Auckland and donated all the proceeds to earthquake charities.

Then when they came back to Christchurch last year, he told the crowd that they would come back and play a free show.

Holy crap, can someone bring these guys to Christchurch? It's been 5 1/2 YEARS since the earthquake and the roads are still fucked here (admittedly there's a lot more work, but still....)

Christchurch earthquake and cliff collapse

Dave Grohl breaks his leg, goes to hospital then plays show.

ChaosEngine says...

Can you imagine the conversation with the doctor?

"we done, doc?"
"well, yes, the plaster is set. I'd recommend at least a few days rest"
"Screw that! To the show!!"

Also, Dave Grohl is the fucking man. After the earthquake in Christchurch in 2011, he donated all the proceeds from his next show in NZ to the recovery charities. Then, they came back 4 years after the quake, played a gig in Christchurch and told everyone in the audience that they were gonna come back and play a free concert in Christchurch.

The dude is a fucking legend.

Christchurch From The Streets - trailer

ChaosEngine says...

The wizard had mostly retired by the time of the quakes.

And yeah, it reminded me of New Orleans too.

The day after the quake hit I was talking with some friends, and we were discussing the future of Christchurch. Some people left, some people felt there was no future, but most of us thought some good could come out of it. We could have a future city, built around sustainability; somewhere that would attract people to live in it.

Right now, I don't see that happening. In some ways, this needed a dictatorship, but instead everything has been buried in committees and insurance companies have tried to weasel out of everything and made peoples lives a misery.

I still hope we'll get something cool out of it, but I'm no longer as confident as I once was. Too much short term thinking and bitching about spending too much money.

How did the wizard fair? Was he still out there doing his thing when the quake hit? I had a great time with him in the late 80's. He was a fixture of the town at that time, I hope he's still there trying to sell his 'inside out universe' and 'upside down globe' theories, along with all the other insanity he spouted so gleefully.
It's so sad to see the damage still so bad 4 years later. Hints of New Orleans in that. It was such a beautiful place (and still is, but obviously in recovery).
One good thing though, this gives Christchurch the opportunity to become the most technologically advanced city in NZ, or even the entire southern hemisphere. Since the infrastructure needs to be rebuilt anyway, youall can do it right instead of just plastering over rust and broken concrete (like we do here in the US). Fingers crossed that it gets done the right way, and not just bandaged over with last century tech.
I SOOOO want to come back there and visit again. Most beautiful country and people (on the inside anyway) anywhere on earth. I miss it badly.

Yeah, that pretty much mirrors my experience with earthquakes in NZ. I live in Christchurch and I've been through something like 10000 aftershocks since 2011. There's nothing in my house that isn't bolted down now, because everything that wasn't is broken

And it's freaking hilarious watching people go nuts over californias little shake

I live in Japan and if I were to dive under my desk every time there was an earthquake, I'd be under there at least 3 times a day. Since the 2011 earthquake we've had constant aftershocks, some as strong as 5 and 6 on the Richter scale (which makes the panic seen over California's most recent quake somewhat amusing).

ChaosEngine is correct, you can gauge how bad the earthquake is by the amount of shaking. On March 3rd, 2011--the only time I have actually dived under a table during an earthquake--plates were flying off my kitchen shelves and shattering on the floor.

That said, Japan is a country that is truly prepared for quakes. Any big items you buy like refrigerators or big screen TVs usually come with fasteners to bolt them down so they don't fall over during a quake. The buildings here are incredibly well-engineered to survive a severe quake--very few people during the 3.11 quake were killed by collapsing structures.
