Whats a "Rusty Venture"?

UFC 121: Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez

I enjoy a good UFC match and the surrounding drama, but does anyone else wish they'd go back to the days of UFC I through III where it was a lot more like Street Fighter II?

Style clash is certainly intriguing to think about, but rarely seems to play out as a good fight.

It is nice when you see someone come in with a unique feature, talent or approach to fighting: Lyoto Machida & Anderson Silva (as GK says), Genki Sudo, Megumi Fujii, Cung Le, Karo Parisyan... These fighters all do (or did) things that made them stand apart whether they were successful or not.

Hey Genji,
Judging from your comment, seems im not the only one who shares my thoughts!

I remember when UFC first started in one form or another and guys would wear karate gear and the big sell was this guy is a boxer fighting a wrestler or this guy is a karate expert fighting a boxing guy.
But the "sport" seems to have evolved into an organized school brawl. The fights look amateurish and often dont go beyond 2 rounds, cause lets face it, not matter how big and muscly you are, skin is skin and easily cuts. The term "ground and pound" comes up often.

Dont get me wrong, I like a good fight just like the next guy... but im not seeing the skill in UFC. Where are the Tyson's, Ali's, Zhu's, etc.

Im keen to learn more, point me in the right direction

later bro

Goddamnit. Why do we always have this discussion?

First.
The only person who's struggling after two minutes is Lesnar.

He's a transplant from "professional" wrestling. Which is why he sucks.
He has no skill. No Endurance. And no clue what to do inside an octagon.

Lesnar was only the champion cause he's built like a grizzly bear/tank/meat shield hybrid.

He is essentially baby huey.

Shane Carwin almost beat him. Frank Mir did once before. He sucks and everyone knows it.

Second.
Of course it's a sport old fogey.

Are you really gonna sit there and try to tell everyone that
- FIGHTING ANOTHER HUMAN BEING FOR 15 TO 25 MINTUES STRAIGHT! -
doesn't take any athleticism, technique, training or endurance?

Fer cereal? = /

>> ^GuyFawkes:

I dont get this "sport", give me boxing anyday. For "professional" athletes they sure struggle after 2mins. Maybe its a gen y instant gratification thing... maybe im old.

Guy goes to hospital for 10 minutes, gets $7000 bill.

Tingles says...

This reminds me of a Newsradio episode where Matthew Brock (Andy Dick) cuts his hand up somewhat bad during some office horseplay involving a light fixture and a cup. He was not insured.

The bill was something like $13000 for a few stitches. Back in the 90's when this episode aired, I did some research. It wasn't a joke they were trying to make with this episode. That's literally how much it cost (the producers did their research) to fix that kind of hand wound.

Sure in Canada I would have to wait upwards of 12hours at Lions Gate Hospital Emergency Room in NorthVan BC to get any attention, but at least it wouldn't cost me a god damn cent. Holy hell.

Wow old man, spoken like a true middle-aged fanboy. = P

Of course mma standup isn't at the level of boxing. Boxing is all standup.
Mixed martial arts is every other martial art style you can think of.

If you can't see that then you're not as smart as you'd like yourself to believe, with your crabby panties-in-a-bunch attitude. =]

A boxing round is 3 mins of standup hugging.
36 mins of dancing in boxing boots like an Acme cartoon.

MMA rounds are 5 mins of defending takedowns, submissions, head kicks, leg kicks, judo throws .. and strikes.
A MMA title fight is 5 rounds. That's 25 mins of working every muscle in your body.

If you aren't able to understand that about MMA you don't even know what you're talking about. [Which is already quite apparent]

I don't think you can appreciate all the disciplines of Mixed Martial Arts because you're sitting here complaining about heavyweights and how they aren't amazing conventional boxers.

P.S. - Fedor Emelianenko lost finally. Not due to great standup but by double submission: Armbar Triangle Choke.

My point is: of course MMA standup is sloppy. You have four or five other modes of attack you have to calculate and defend against.

>> ^highdileeho:

The standup talent isn't anywhere near the level of boxing. Is all i'm going to say and if you can't see that then your not as smart as you would like people to believe, with your pompus arrogant attitude.

the reason they were throwing haymakers was because they had to fight A 10 round match, (something mma athletes are not physiclly capable of)they were completly exhausted

...if you weren't able to understand that about fighting/boxing then i really don't know why i'm wasting my time, because you don't even know what your talking about.

mma is a good sport. I can appreciate all of the disciplines, my favorite fighter is emilionenko-- i'm not spell checking that name--, and my favorite style is sambo, it's far and away the best fighting discipline.

My point is mma needs to step up it's standup game it's sloppy.

Generally speaking, the HWs are the least interesting to me, as well. They're the least technical overall. Of course I generally feel the same way about HWs in boxing; lots of hugging and not so much fighting.

The 'good' boxers in MMA are not as good as pure boxers, but I do enjoy watching them do their thing. I wouldn't consider Carwin a 'good' boxer even by MMA standards; he's just a monster.

The best part about this fight was seeing King Hippo Brock Lesnar humbled, even if he did get the W in the end.

As a boxing fan, I can't enjoy heavyweight mma fights. It lacks the presicion and discipline that I'm used to. I'll watch a good boxing match over a the best mma fights any day. That's not to say i'm an mma hater, I just think that boxing has it's own place, and it's a shame that the younger generation has seemed to have forgoten how awesome a sport boxing is:

Great, this argument again.
Explain how being FORCED to stand directly in front of someone as you wing haymakers at each other takes anymore precision or discipline than what you see in mma.
Boxing is to MMA as Firing pin is to Gun.
It's less dynamic, the action is less aesthetically appealing, and it's just as brutal as mma.
No one forgot how awesome boxing was. We all just remember how boring it is.
Brock Lesnar is an awful fighter. That's why you can't stand to watch this fight.
Watch Anderson Silva. Urijah Faber.
If you still think boxing has something on mma you're no doubt a die hard fanboy.
Which is fine.
Just remember to tell your friends at the geriatric ward to refrain from using such a poor argument.

Look I still enjoy boxing as well as mma, but the argument that it's boring is pretty weak. How quickly you forgot about the last ufc in the spring, and this fight only looks marginaly more appealing. I remember hearing all the ufc fans bitching about wasting their money on those matches in the spring because it was a bunch of boring fights. The standup talent isn't anywhere near the level of boxing. Is all i'm going to say and if you can't see that then your not as smart as you would like people to believe, with your pompus arrogant attitude. And the reason they were throwing haymakers was because they had to fight A 10 round match, (something mma athletes are not physiclly capable of)they were completly exhausted but the match was too close for either fighter to sit back and wait for a desicion...if you weren't able to understand that about fighting/boxing then i really don't know why i'm wasting my time, because you don't even know what your talking about. mma is a good sport. My point is mma needs to step up it's standup game it's sloppy. the announcers were getting all excited about grazing uppercuts and slow sloppy jabs, and if kids start thinking that those punches are something to get excited about then were are going to see much more crappy, boring, amateur hour, fights. and lose all of our muhhamad ali's, tysons, aruro gattis, roberto durans, and all the rest of the truly great stand up artists. they will be replaced by 500 lb slabs of meat who can barely lift their arms to throw a punch, ask them to throw 200 punches and theyre fat, meaty heads will explode at the notion that it is possible.

Great this argument again. As a boxer you aren't forced to stand in front of your opponent, you endeavor to flank your opponent. The same way you would endeavor to flank your opponent in MMA.

There is a difference from Prize Fighting and Amateur Boxing. One is point based (like fencing) and one is more for show. Hay-makers in Amateur boxing score the same as jab punches; points are scored based on skill. Knockdowns are key in Prizefighting, and there's money involved.

Prize fighting usually is not a show of skill, more a show of balls out slugging. I'd rather watch two guys go at it with swords and nets. Instead of watching some guys roll around on the floor, or just hammer away at each other.

Every now and then there is someone who makes boxing interesting to watch. Most of them are counter punching defensive fighters. People who can bob, weave, slip, and catch; then counter.

Remember, they're fucking sports. So who gives a shit as long as you enjoy watching two flop-dicks pounding each other.

Whale Song - Modest Mouse (HD + Fullscreen it)

The indie rock band Modest Mouse is getting the royal treatment from Bent Image Lab’s new director/partner Nando Costa. Just completed, the band’s new music video is a dark and expressive piece of film-making. Heavily rooted in live-action, the impressive six-minute video includes intense moments of stop motion, visual effects, and motion graphics techniques, all brought to life within the studio’s walls.

The visuals follow an artist who enters his personal sanctuary where he is presented with a hand-crafted drawing tool that assists him in materializing his mental impressions. Through drawing circular patterns, the machine discharges an endless web of yarn that guides him through his visual representations of his memories. The story progresses to reveal that he is divided between two worlds, one of dull reality and the second of warped memories. In the process of finding a way out of his consciousness, he is trapped between the two competing spaces, which eventually inflict lethal damage, acting as metaphors to self-destruction.

This lyrical and moving piece was conceived by Nando Costa working closely with lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock to polish some of the film's intricacies. Featuring a seamless combination of live-action and stop motion that alternates between stage shots of Modest Mouse and a spiraling dream-like world of ever-shifting landscapes, Whale Song is a stunning representation of the combined capabilities of Nando and Bent. The variety and execution of the VFX portions of the video – from yarn reeling into complex patterns to a guitar that plays with no musician attached – strongly evoke the confused and surreal patterns of one's warped memories. Additional creative touches such as animated and intricate photographic collages and giant CG snails sliding across the band's stage – add variety and depth to the surreal world.
