BBC presents: The most retarded mac vs pc comparison ever

cobalt says...

I'm pretty sure vista doesn't really eat all that RAM when idle. Regardless of what system I install it on and regardless of the amount of RAM it has, usage is always 45-50%. I'm not sure what thats about but its pissed a lot of people off and made them think vista is more of a RAM hog than it really is. (OK its still pretty bad, but not that bad)

You only need to "double your hardware specs" if you were previously on some 2.4 celly with 512mb etc. That struggled to run xp after a while so why anybody thought vista would have lower requirements is beyond me. Its not like apple's offerings could run well on a mac from 10 years ago with modern apps.

Vista was fucked up beyond belief but it was a (marginal) improvement on xp and theres a lot of work gone on behind the pretty GUI to justify the upgrade.

Laura Ingraham gets schooled by Ron Paul

quantumushroom says...

RoPaul, naive beyond belief, seems more like dial-up than dialed.

When pu**yass Carter let it be known the US would not be standing up for itself in the 70s, the commies invaded no less than SEVEN countries.

Today there are Chinese subs prowling every ocean (with much-improved missile tech thanks to Clinton) and Russia appears to be sliding back towards tyranny.

We live in a dangerous world where goodwill only goes so far. The US can never afford weak leaders who live in denial of the realities of national (self-)defense.

Halliburton (does not) Supports the Troops

wax66 says...

A lot of us care and just have no idea what we can do about it.

My sentiments exactly. This video makes me angry beyond belief. I knew that we have almost always shorted the troops on equipment, but this goes way beyond that.

But seriously, what can we do? I don't even see anything that Halliburton makes that us civies can boycott. I'll surely let my congressman know, but that's still putting the power in someone else's hands.

Look who's talking. You're as clueless as you are confused, and you read what you wish to read. Feel free to reread what I wrote and quote which line you drew your ridiculous conclusion from. You post condescending and confrontational shit for every vid that questions your precious beliefs, so don't get pissy when someone bites back. Unless yer just suckin' up for them dag brownie points? Hmmmm? Choggie to the rescue? Persephone isn't under attack, and I'm sure she could give as well as take if she were.

You obviously (obviously) have no idea what I believe, and you jump to conclusions to support whatever disjointed, rambling prose the 100 monkeys locked in your basement can come up with. The only thing even remotely clever about your comments is your incredibly high word count/points made ratio, often undefined. Some may see your act as wisdom bordering on insanity, or chalk it up as "choggie just being choggie". I just see it as stale.

This pretty much sums up my view on the unexplained and unknown. Please don't watch it. You need all the boogeyman you can conjure.

Have a nice day.

In reply to your comment:
I was hoping for some examples and some lively debate. You gave no examples (c'mon... flawed and outdated views on acupuncture? Acupuncture?!?), and although we are all entitled our own opinions regarding others, I think your personal opinion of Shermer is baseless. As far as debate, I don't think it will be possible to meaningfully debate with someone who views "science" as vague, thinks the AMA is the second-biggest corporation ever, and invokes Star Trek in his/her argument.

Even if Shermer were belligerent, science is not, and that is something I don't think you understand. As Ann Druyan explained very beautifully here (coincidentally, Shermer is sitting in the audience), scientists are human and have bias's. They can be assholes. They can be dismissive, strident, condescending, intractable, and prejudice, just like every other human being. But scientific method ultimately wins the day as its' built-in checks and balances overcome these things.

Your comment was all over the place, bighead, but I think your pessimism towards science and scientific method is based in ignorance rather some anecdotal experience. Read more. Think critically, not paranoidally. Don't be afraid to expose yourself to things you "know" to be untrue. If nothing else, you may learn the minds of those you disagree with. This isn't meant to be condescending. Just friendly advice.

Shermer views on acupuncture were. kind of funny ...im glad you admit that shemmer was belligerent. that was my maine point.
shemer thinks acupuncture is based on a quack theory. he thicks that he the can prove 2000 years of life energy theories from the fare east as wishful thinking, with junk the establishment (Harvard) taught him.

as for you saying i think science is vague. that i would say is a mater of semantics.
science is a vague word in that . to talk about this subject i wanted to distinguish between value of science and pitfalls of modern scientific method. particularly the gold standard of randomized controlled studies.

what are you views on the ama and its highjack scientific method. do you not agree that the ama has used its power to promote itself under the banner of " we are so smart and our rigorous double blind studies are to help man kind. " i think the ama is extremely belligerent this respect

science is important and useful and can be used like a good tool that it is . but
my problem is with scientism. shemer is one who contends that scientism is the way of the modern world. this is a extremist view. even the establishment acknowledges this.
i repeat
1 scientific method is not wrong or unjust in it self but that individuals often use scientific method to achieve fame (shemmer) wealth the (ama).
2. that it doubtfull that shimmer will prove theories acupuncture and life energy wrong.
3. that science is not something that began in the 19th century.
4. that good science is a tool not a bandwagon that trys to debunk rather then understand.

star trek was a metaphor to the way people are so busy looking for big answers to "Save" or understand mankind at the cost of failing to see simple natural truths with out the blockage of being tide down to needing to get down to the jest of everything.
and you pint out the scientest / humans have so many flaws. i dont buy that excuse. its the same excuse people use when the get busted riging their so called scientific studys so they get fame and money . you should slow dawn and not just dismiss bad moral character. that is at the root of my skepticism of mikey Shermer and his followers who preach intolerance and dogmatism. remember other key words money

Christianity in a nutshell

this one inparticular had me rolling.
"because when you actually look into it, unravelling the Bible is as hard as unravelling quantum mechanics."
for who ? a monkey ? or someone who is gullible beyond belief.
a great many people have easily unravelled the bible with ease. why, how you ask ??
because the bible makes grandiose absurd claims that are not backed up by history, archeology, or any factual evidence.

Tacoma Protest (March 10/07)

gorillaman says...

That second clip is beyond belief. You have people sitting on the ground SINGING, and the police respond the only way they can to such aggression, with tear gas.

What really pisses me off is the way the protesters do nothing in response. Cops are people too, they don't have any special exemptions from decency, and what that means is when they attack you for no reason you have the right to fight back. What they should have done is formed up, found some weapons and stormed the line. Pound their piggy fucking faces into the pavement. Or at least made the effort.

And what pisses me off even more is no-one will agree with that.

Arrogant alien invades earth. **** Off., 21 December 2000

*Some spoilers*

Don't you just hate people who come to your house un-invited, criticise the decor, break something without offering to pay and then push of without so much as a by-your-leave? Well, the arrogance and pomposity of this ET is beyond belief. Despite the flaunting of superior technology he lacks even basic common sense. He leaves his spaceship surrounded by people pointing guns at him, says nothing, then reaches into his jacket and takes out something that makes a sudden movement resulting in his wounding. What does he expect? But no, of course it's all our fault and he sulks. we were too stupid to realise it was a gift, he laments. Well, excuse ME, Mr Alien entity, but we don't have space ships landing every five minutes and scaring the hell out of us, did you take that into consideration? And that huge robot of yours should respect our customs and wear his underpants INSIDE his trousers, this is a public place. But no, Klaatu is here to tell us our business and arrogantly expects us to organise a conference just the way he wants rather than taking a more diplomatic approach or doing a television broadcast which would be more practical. Finally, he decides to do just that, after much huffing and puffing.

Fortunately for Klaatu, the military are none too bright either when he decides to go walkies around Washington. No one thought to take his picture or show a sketch or photo-fit of him over the TV or newspapers thus allowing him to move into a boarding house where he meets Helen and her son, Bobby. Bobby is a bright kid. After seeing Klaatu go into the space ship at night he comes to the perfectly reasonable conclusion that he's a diamond smuggler. And Helen is an irresponsible mother in allowing him to wander around with a total stranger who could be a child molester or something. I'm sure they get them in outer space too. Meanwhile the military continues it's bungling. Only two men guard the most dangerous object in the world without any other hardware or electronic surveillance and the public seems none too curious, either. Also despite there being soldiers on every street corner, not one of them notices a great big robot stomping along the pavements looking for Klaatu. Could his low opinion of the human race be justified? Possibly. Helen is told to say to Gort: "Klaatu barada nikto." But instead she tells him: "Gort Klaatu Barada Nikto" which isn't the same thing. She was lucky not to get zapped.

Now, I could go on all day (and I usually do) but it has to be said that Klaatu's out of order. He enters American air space without permission, lands an unlicensed vehicle in a municipal park, damages military property, deals in un-authorised currency, obstructs traffic, illegally uses a service elevator, kills two men, damages some deck chairs, knocks down a wall and finally tries evading a taxi fare. Are we meant to be impressed?

In fairness, he does pay a great personal price for his reprehensible behaviour but remains supercilious and lacking in humility to the last. He gives us some fascistic nonsense about a system that crushes any aggression with robots that fly around the galaxy. What is this, dumb and dumber? Can you imagine how many arguments and punch-ups there are amongst billions of inhabitants on a planet PER DAY? Get real. And EXCUSE ME, Mr Silver jumpsuit, but doesn't all human progress rely on aggression and individuality? It's every human's right to start wars, oppress the weak and drive around at dangerous speeds in a jeep while having one hand on a phone. We saw off Communism and we'll see you off too, MISTER Klaatu.

Neil deGrasse Tyson responds to Intelligent Design

BoneyD says...

We've heard a lot from Mr Dawkins, and he's fun and all, but I think this guy is a far better salesman for the benefits of science. Unlike the aforementioned's method of simply belittling you for believing in a higher power/creator.

This is an exerpt from the Beyond Belief discussion, which I believe has been linked elsewhere. Quite large downloads (roughly 200meg each), but is recommended viewing!

Stupid Design - evidence for a universe without a design

Grimm says...

This is from a presentation by Neil deGrasse Tyson at the 2006 Beyond Belief conference. Neil is the director of the Hayden Planetarium in the Rose Center For Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History. In this Powerpoint entitled "Stupid Design" Tyson points out some of the glaring evidence for a universe without a designer.
