Ah, I get it. Your screen name means history nerd. I thought it meant histamine nerd. You know, because you really dig biogenic amines. And who doesn't? Seratonin is my favorite. It regulates sleep, mood, appetite, and even sexual behavior. I call it the "sexy" amine. But histamine is cool too.

And history is also okay. I guess.

The needs of many bring about the tyranny of good intentions. I know my icon is so representatively on the nose of that idea that it's gross to consider it as a realistic philosophy, but that doesn't mean the idea should be lost in ru thoughts. The tyranny of good intentions doesn't only pertain to the great social fascists of current, but also may pertain to this site's admin in a very, very subtle way.

"personal hatred of your collusive policies" haha -dude- I'm just a guy sitting in my underwear on my laptop in the kitchen, not Idi Amin. But that's cool- if you would like to see me as "the man" then you are welcome to joust away.

In reply to this comment by blankfist:
Your comment wasn't smug at all, was it? I shake my head at you now, dag. Didn't we have our conversation about this already? Wasn't I already an avid participant of conversation and dialog? This really has nothing to do with baseless sarcasm, dag, but has everything to do with my personal hatred of your collusive policies. That's all. You know what you did that pisses me off right now, so don't act as if I'm thoughtlessly disgruntled. I'm not some dumbass thirteen year old who is incapable of asserting himself.

I bet you look forward to seeing me around. I bet you do. Well, if it's any consolation, I hope to be around for a very long, long, long time ensuring what I perceive as small injustices aren't met without some form of resistance. Cheers.

In reply to this comment by dag:
OK, well- good luck with that then. The Sift thrives with a diversity of opinion- but the sarcasm in that thread and this one is kind of asinine- you're welcome to keep at it, but if you're planning to set yourself up as a serious critic, I'm a little disappointed you are not engaging in real dialogue. Sarcasm is a poor man's wit. But anyway, thanks for contributing, and look forward to seeing you around.

In reply to this comment by blankfist:
Yeah... and then again... no. Dag, I have taken a bit of a hiatus from this site, because of my personal and political differences with some of your decisions - which I haven't kept a secret, really. But as you know I've been more than a generous patron. So, before you try to cast me off easily with a tap of a few keys and with a couple self-righteous invocations, let me announce proudly that I've proffered a larger amount than most other members with my generous contributions - I never intended to receive award or praise for this, but, there it is all pink and naked now.

Charter membership is set at a low rate, but that's not my fault. When you had a money drive, I was one of the first (the very FIRST) to offer twice what was asked for a t-shirt. Oh, dearest dag, I've been more than a loyal supporter, so I find it in great disgust for you to insinuate I leave this community. That's more than a smack in the face, it's just terrible, really.

I refuse to leave this community on my own accord, but instead I hope I can offer a objective and constantly contrary perspective. This is a private company's site, so feel free to banish me as you see fit. But, don't expect me to sit idly by when you write such things as, "and if you find the current climate here disagreeable you are welcome to sample other communities."

Not a touch disgusting? No?

In reply to this comment by dag:
OK, whatever - so you were being sarcastic. It's late for me to be playing comment games. I'll leave you to your disgruntlement.

But before you set yourself up as the beacon of self-rightous social justice- may I just suggest that the Internet is a very big place- and if you find the current climate here disagreeable you are welcome to sample other communities.

Shooting in a Casino Elevator

Lithic says...

Some background in case someone is as interested as I was, the suspect currently on trial is named Shepherd in the following quote:

"Police have said a fistfight preceded the 4 a.m. shooting after Shepherd confronted a 19-year-old man who made a comment about Shepherd's younger sister.

Shepherd, who police said was punched and knocked down in the scuffle, is accused of retrieving a gun from a vehicle, returning to the lobby and opening fire at Terrance Aubry, who police say made the comment.

Aubry was not wounded, but Vance Davis, 20, was shot in the arm and Markael Ballou, 23, was wounded in the leg. Both were treated at a Las Vegas hospital and released.

Police have characterized Davis and Ballou as bystanders with no ties to Aubry."
-By Ken Ritter, Associated Press Writer

Terrance can probebly thank his lucky stars the guy didnt know how to use a gun properly, if he had actually had a round chambered when he tried to fire (he cocks the gun after raising it as the elevator doors open, giving the guy he's amining at time to run away) he'd probebly been a lot worse off.

America to the Rescue - The Daily Show

Diogenes says...

so, wait... you won't believe or credit any information from the us state department's public affairs section because of a perceived punditry by its under secretary, but you'll readily give credence to a site like globalresearch.ca, which itself is a mishmash of hackery, anti-americanism and anti-globalization?

heh, there goes your credibility

your second link is a wonder of the 'cut-and-splice, out-of-context quotation' technique, infamously popularized by the likes of michael moore

'but all mujahideen benefited in one way or another from the CIA's support of Pakistan's ISI.'

yes, in your unsurprisingly obtuse statement, a greater us support for the afghan mujahideen meant more military successes, which in turn meant that osama and the rest of the arab mujahideen didn't necessarily need to risk their necks in battle, as we have seen was the case during the soviet invasion - this could certainly be seen as a benefit for the latter

'And bin Laden would not have any reason to go to Afghanistan and become a freedom fighter if not for the United States' prodding that led to the Soviet invasion in the first place.'

revisionist garbage

as noted in my second post here, us aid began in 1979, not 1980 - but your stretching that to mean that the us brought on the entire invasion is too much -- with your 'post hoc, ergo propter hoc' argument completely ignoring afghan political history prior to july 1979, such as the panjdeh incident, tacit soviet support for the marxist pdpa since the late '50s, and the soviet-afghan bilateral treaty of support and cooperation of 1978, popular uprisings against the atheistic reform programs of the taraki gov't leading to soviet-backed executions and mass bombings killing over 50,000 afghan protestors, and finally the fact that the amin gov't was requesting significant and direct soviet military involvement prior to any actions taken by the us... this goes to show how simplistic your view of the situation is, and that your laying the blame for osama and al qaeda at the doorstep of the united states is inappropriate

your cites also continue to claim that the taliban was the beneficiary of us aid - this is complete bunk -- ALL us aid to pakistan--and by isi-extension, to afghanistan--ended on october 1, 1990 and is a matter of record under the pressler amendment

basically what your skewed sources are claiming is that because us aid in the '80s supported the afghan mujahideen fighting the soviets, thus any afghan who fought against the soviets with us aid who then went on to support the taliban in the mid-'90s, well... ipso facto, the us aided the taliban

nice reasoning - lol

General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait - Amazing 1970s Film

gwaan says...

The real thing - much scarier than Forest Whitaker in 'The Last King of Scotland' (although Forest is superb and deserves an Oscar!):

In 1971, the small African nation of Uganda was taken over by self-styled dictator General Idi Amin Dada, beginning an eight-year reign of terror that would result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands. Released in 1976, in this chilling yet darkly comic documentary, director Barbet Schroeder turns his cameras on the infamous tyrant, revealing the dynamic, charming, and appallingly dangerous man whose fanatical neuroses held an entire nation in their grip. Made with the full support and participation of the infamous dictator, General Idi Amin Dada provides a candid and disturbing portrait of one of the 20th century’s most notorious figures.

Teaching Children To Become Martyrs - An Aid Worker Speaks

Farhad2000 says...

Question your sources. Then question your reasoning. For something that would be this *cough important Darly Jones the aid worker doesn't seem to exist outside this video. Let's cut the BS, Do you just think all Muslims and Palestinians are some crazed people just matrying themselves at Israel for the last 40 odd years?

http://www.pierrerehov.com/about.htm

What role does the U.N. play in the terrorist equation?

The UN is in the hands of Arab countries and third world or ex-communists countries. Their hands are tied. The UN has condemned Israel more than any other country in the world, including the regime of Castro, Idi Amin or Kaddahfi. By behaving this way, the UN leaves a door open by not openly condemning terrorist organizations. In addition, through UNRWA, the UN is directly tied to terror organizations such as Hamas, representing 65 percent of their apparatus in the so-called Palestinian refugee camps. As a support to Arab countries, the UN has maintained Palestinians in camps with the hope to "return" into Israel for more than 50 years, therefore making it impossible to settle those populations, which still live in deplorable conditions. Four-hundred million dollars are spent every year, mainly financed by U.S. taxes, to support 23,000 employees of UNRWA, many of whom belong to terrorist organizations (see Congressman Eric Cantor on this subject, and in my film "Hostages of Hatred").
