The info I've found is this: the experiments were performed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base by Dayton, OH as part of the MKULTRA project. I'll check around a bit more and tell you if I find my notes.

I certainly wasn't sifting this video for giggles, I was hoping to add some info, but I got distracted trolling drforeverclear. *sigh*. I did some of that. After logging on, I got what looked like UNIX. I did LS, got two files. One was an application program, and one was notes. These are the notes:

1953 - Aperture Science begins operations as a manufacturer of shower curtains. Early product line provides a very low-tech portal between the inside and outside of your shower. Very little science is actually involved. The name is chosen to make the curtains appear more hygienic.

1956 - Eisenhower administratin awards Aperture a contract to provide shower curtains to all branches of the military except the Navy.

1957 - 1975 - Mostly shower curtains.

1978 - Aperture Founder and CEO, Cave Johnson, is exposed to mercury while secretly developing a dangerous mercury-injected rubber sheeting from which he plans to manufacture seven deadly shower curtains to be given as gifts to each member of the House Naval Appropriations committee.

I think "In God We Trust" was on money earlier than that, blankfist, but it became the official national motto in 1956 (what was E Pluribus Unum?). According to Wikipedia, it was first used in 1864 and wasn't mandated by Congress until 1908.

"In God We Trust" first appeared on our coins in 1864 in the midst of the Civil War. This was somehow supposed to show that we were a nation of honorable people despite the appearance of the time.

It first appeared on cash in 1957 after it became our national motto, in order to separate us from those godless commies.

It seems to me that the reasons for both adoptions should offend everyone. As an atheist, I'm not particularly offended; I just think it doesn't belong there. As a Christian, I'd be thoroughly offended that God has become a catchphrase synonymous with "we're not as evil as we seem."

Newly produced episodes were added in 1962, by which time Dallas McKennon became the voice of Gumby, and 1966-67. Besides Pokey, voiced by creator Art Clokey, and his dog Nopey – all the dog ever said was "No" – Gumby's friends included Prickle, a yellow dinosaur or dragon (there are stories that establish him as dragon, and some that establish him as dinosaur - he has been known to breathe fire); and Goo, a blue thumb-type mermaid blob who could fly.
