Quantum Computing Explained

YouTube Description:

Lawrence Krauss describes quantum computing and the technical obstacles we need to overcome to realize this Holy Grail of processing.

I still dont understand how you can calculate something using qbits, have them compute a problem (without you observing them doing it), and observe the result...AND have faith that the result when you observe it is accurate..

How would you know when to observe it?
How can a calculative function arise from quantum, unobserved, randomness?

It seems batshit crazy to me.

dr krauss has a good book... which exists and doesnt exist.

also in todays world:

"An outbreak of measles tied to a Texas megachurch where ministers have questioned vaccination has sickened at least 21 people, including a 4-month-old infant — and it's expected to spread further, state and federal health officials said. 'There's likely a lot more susceptible people,' said Dr. Jane Seward, the deputy director for the viral diseases division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ... All of the cases are linked to the Eagle Mountain International Church in Newark, Texas, where a visitor who'd traveled to Indonesia became infected with measles – and then returned to the U.S., spreading it to the largely unvaccinated church community, said Russell Jones, the Texas state epidemiologist. ... Terri Pearsons, a senior pastor of Eagle Mountain International said she has had concerns about possible ties between early childhood vaccines and autism. In the wake of the measles outbreak, however, Pearsons has urged followers to get vaccinated and the church has held several vaccination clinics. ... 'In this community, these cases so far are all in people who refused vaccination for themselves and their children,' [Steward] added. The disease that once killed 500 people a year in the U.S. and hospitalized 48,000 had been considered virtually eradicated after a vaccine introduced in 1963. Cases now show up typically when an unvaccinated person contracts the disease abroad and spreads it upon return to the U.S.""

for those of you who may think @Drax has lost his mind, let me shed some light for you non-gamers out there:
"give us the girl and wipe away the debt" is a bioshock infinite reference which is heavy (and i mean HEAVY) laden storyline which deals with quantum phyisics, multiple universes etc etc.

Draxsaid:

Give us the girl and wipe away the debt!

The day we do get quantum computing, encryption will be a thing of the past. There really will be no such thing as an uncrackable code (where is said code is recallable and usable again).

This is no good explanation at all. The only explanation about quantum computing that he gives is that we can have bits that are in a) multiple states at the same time and b) more than just two states. I accept that some people didn't know that so it might be new information, but it doesn't tell us anything about how quantum computing works.

It explains the quantum, but doesn't even begin to explain the computing.

Thank you, well put.

No... perhaps the methods we use now will be obsolete but that doesn't mean there aren't (or can't be) ciphers too complicated for even quantum computers to figure out in a short enough time.

If I understand anything about quantum mechanics (hint, I don't), I think it is clear that they tell us that hell does exist. And it doesn't exist at the same time. Until you go looking for hell, at which point it either does or doesn't exist, but not both.

Also, hell (assuming it does exist when you look for it) is both freezing over and hot enough to melt the balls off of a brass monkey. At the same time. Until you stick a thermometer outside.

poolcleanersaid:

It would be a cold day in hell if such a place as hell existed.

I still dont understand how it'll work. It would still use boolean logic? I mean...wat? How? How do qbits interact to do multiple computations without collapsing out of superposition? How do you do any computation without measuring them in the process? What do you mean the answer is 42? What was the question?

Anyway. Good luck to those programmers still struggling with 8 threads. Its going to get a little more tricky gentlemen.

Having the same problems as many here, how is still unexplained. I've heard this "explanation" given in multiple occasions. None seem to think that we would like to know how it computes, not what quantum is...

How can you trust a computation that you have no way of monitoring? A computation that magically gives the right answer? "It just happens, trust us" seems to be the way. Until someone comes up and explains it, it's hocum.

A lot of us in these internet days have a good grasp of what the leading science is about. Not detailed information but the basic concepts are well understood. Quantum is old news, string theories, multiple dimensions.. We are not children in science anymore so don't treat us such.
