12K PC Gaming

ChaosEngine says...

I'm not talking about building a "serious gaming rig". Any half decent gaming pic is 2-3 times more powerful than an xbone/ps4. 1080 is really pretty low end for modern PCs.

I'm talking about building a low end PC that's comparable to a console. There are plenty of articles detailing it on the web.

As for configuration, drivers, etc, this isn't the 90s any more. If you want to build a god machine, oc the hell out of it, then yeah, you need to put some serious effort in. But to build a simple machine, run windows and steam, and play at 1080p? Not really much work involved.

I built a pretty powerful machine last year (water cooled, over clocked, etc) and it took a lot of work. But I haven't really needed to do much since.

What? Where? I don't see even bare bones computers for <$350, how do you build a serious gaming rig for that?...or for less because you get a game and a controller for that with a console, that's another $80+ for a PC to be even equal at startup. Um, games cost the same for consoles as PC, and again, you can't rent PC games, so the cost to play NEW games is incredibly higher on PC....and steam is available on some consoles....so....I'm still in the 'console is cheaper to play' camp....for now.

@SDGundamX yeah, consoles used to "just work", when they were actually dedicated games machines.

This console generation is just shit PCs. There's really no reason to buy a console anymore.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they exist. They subsidise games that are better on the pc and console controllers are absolutely better for some games.

But now you can buy a PC for less than the cost of a new xbone/ps4 and run your games in full 1080p using the same controller. And there's no faffing about required.
Plus you get way more games than are available on console.

Fuck yeah, it's GPCGMR time!

Stunningly real graphics

Low-spec PC? Around the same as XBone/PS4? Get real. This stuff was rendered on an i7-3770 / GTX670. The XBone can barely handle Diablo 3 at 1080p.

@newtboy, this is actually running on a fairly low-spec pc (around the same as an xbone or ps4).

But yeah, this is similar to the deus ex video I posted a while back,
*related=http://videosift.com/video/Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution-Unreal-4-demo

One small area with great attention paid to lighting and detail with no mechanics or animation.

@jmd, agreed the trees weren't great, but not all games are about open worlds and dynamic events. Look at COD. Very linear, incredibly scripted.

The fundamental problem with AAA games is the cost to create content. I think we're going to ultimately see some blend of procedural and hand created content as the way forward, where the designers build a layout for gameplay and a procedural engine fleshes out the visual details.

Meh, all of those things (lounge, controller, etc) can be done with a gaming PC. Plus you'll actually get 1080p, whereas the PS4 version probably won't.

I have no problem with consoles, when they were consoles, but the ps4 and xbone are just shittier PCs.

Really? That doesn't say much for your imagination. I'll try to help.

1. You don't have a gaming PC
2. You want to play in on your home theater from your easy chair
3. You prefer a controller to a keyboard and mouse
4. You want to play on your 60' plasma and 1080p is good enough.

I could think of more but hopefully that helps.

Honestly , I have a gaming rig but my GTX560ti is about obsolete and the last time I priced new cards the crypto-currency miners had driven up the prices. If I don't buy a nice card before this releases I will enjoy the hell out of this game on PS4. If it has a good multiplayer I'll play it on PS4 regardless.

PC master-race...sheesh.

South Park - Xbox One vs PS4

Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race.
I feel bad for all you dirty console peasants, especially since your new machines can't even run games in 1080p!

Meanwhile, I shall be over here with my oculus and my 120hz 1440p monitor with the Best Damn Control System Ever: the awesome keyboard/mouse/xbox-360-xcontroller-when-I-need-it combo.

Also, if you really must be a dirty console peasant, here is a simple guide:
the ps4 has better hardware, the xbone has a better controller.

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA!

Or at least I will be until my wife finds out how I spent on new PC hardware....

The Sony Playstation 4 (PS4) Makes Its Debut

Deano says...

That's a fair shout. There's going to be different market segments for this and for me I doubt I could accommodate the camera physically, if it's anything like Kinect.
Looks like it could be fun for family situations though. I could even see that aliens demo being expanded into a game.

In the UK I note that the PS4+camera still comes in cheaper than the Xbone. Interesting.

entr0py said:

For me the lack of an included camera was the biggest reason to go with the PS4.

At the start of the last console generation I didn't want to pay an extra $200 for a bluray player I didn't want. This time I don't want to pay an extra $100 for a camera I don't want.

Who Would Want to Buy Anything From These Pricks??

Microsoft's response to the PS4 not having DRM

TheFreak says...

It seems like a lot of people are just jumping on a big bandwagon as far as the XB hate. This is more of a series of PR mistakes than any real issue concerning the XBOne.

Since DRM is up to the publishers on both systems, the only difference is going to be the unified DRM system on XBOne versus a hodgepodge of DRM on the PS4. I can guaranty you there will be NO examples of a publisher releasing a game with DRM on XBOne and then releasing the same game on PS4 without DRM. It's not going to happen. Same thing for restricting the sale of your used game. If a publisher activates this feature on XBOne, you KNOW they're going to implement the same type of restriction on the same game released on PS4.

The only real issue seems to be the daily online system checks by XBOne and the hourly checks for online gameplay. This either affects you or it doesn't. In my case, it doesn't affect me, so it's a non-issue. If it genuinely affects you then you should absolutely buy the PS4, assuming MS doesn't reverse course on that decision based on community feedback, which they've already indicated is a possibility.

I suspect there are a lot more people displaying outrage over some of these issues who actually aren't affected in the least. I also promise you there's a large group of people who know this whole affair is overblown bullshit but they're not going to weigh in with their opinion in this toxic environment.

How to share games on the PS4

VoodooV says...

I was certain the Xbone was going to be backwards compatible. I thought that question was settled last generation. People want backward compatibility.

So fuck them. I was loving the 360, but now I'm back to being PC-centric.

This idea of having to collect all the consoles so you can play the games you want to play is ridiculously stupid. And they wonder why people develop emulators so they can play everything on the PC
