I think if you want to make Earth similar to Mars all you have to do is remove the magnetosphere. In your example, a criminal trial with different rules, the defense could be you didn’t see them, or they dove in front of your moving car, or you were having a medical issue….or one of a thousand mitigating factors. We lucked out that it wasn’t deadly a year later, and didn’t cause horrible birth defects with near zero exposure…we had no concrete idea at the time though just guesses, and still don’t have a clear idea of how much it contributed to higher cancer rates in the US.

Keep in mind, we had no idea what discussions the Japanese were having amongst themselves , so no idea how effective our bombs nor the Manchurian offensive were at persuading them to surrender. Hindsight is 2020, but at the time we were flying blind.

The uncertain risk there of possibly killing millions of ourselves or gimping or sterilizing or even Cronenberging entire future generations for the comparatively minimal convenience of not using conventional bombs, to me, is no where near worth it. He took money from any corporation that could stomach him, and he used his campaign funds as a personal bank account, paying his family members $1.8 million an hour for introducing him on stage ($60k for 2 minutes).
There’s never been a more bought politician or a more unqualified nepotistic administration….but he doesn’t stay bought, he flips the instant someone pays him to flip or if the political wind changes direction.

Between ocean acidification, deep water warming, overfishing, invasive species, pollution, loss of ice packs, and other as yet unknown factors, the ocean’s ability to produce food is going to be severely limited in the near future. It already is, in fact.

This is like a massive corn blight on land.
