99.9% of what was released in that wikileaks dump was mundane information. We've reached a point where we reflexively classify everything. In this circumstance, it's fair to release everything, including the mundane, because hiding information that shouldn't be classified in the the first place is a form of corruption.

In retrospect, I think Assange should have made an effort to only release information that revealed corruption or wrongdoing. I don't see much point in leaking classified information just for the sake of releasing classified information. Less wikileaks, more wikiwhistleblowing. Were there any other major bombshells other than the 'Collateral Murder' video? And what ever happened to those supposed leaks that were to bring Bank of America to its knees? Daniel Ellsberg he is not.

I actually disagree. My interpretation of the wikileaks approach is that transparency in government is important. They release a whole lot of information that they believe the citizens of respective countries deserve access to should they choose. The fact that most of it is banal or not evidence of corruption is not the point, in my opinion. The fact is, our governments do so much wrong while hiding behind weak claims of 'national interest' in their secrecy - and the trend of secrecy grows. I think what wikileaks does is make those in governments think about what they do behind the veil, because it may one day be out in the open at a time not of their choosing.

Working with government from time to time, I see some merit in this argument.

It really bothers me how some Liberals or Libertarians...or "College Kids" have noticed that Wikileaks exists and talk about how it's changing the game...and we're learning soo much from it about how the world works. Now it's true that we're learning a BIT about what's going on today...but not about how the world works or the US government. It's always worked in this way, seriously I want all the smug, aggressive, moronic people who think of themselves as hardcore for being against the government to pick up The Pentagon Papers sometime. Seriously it's a good read, COINTELPRO...kind of IMPORTANT.

I'm just sick of idiot 20 somethings talking to me as if they know something. You're an idiot, and you know NOTHING.

Assange's Christmas address from Ecuador embassy in London

Trancecoach says...

I had the privilege of talking with Daniel Ellsberg a couple of weeks ago about Assange and wikileaks and while he's in support of the freedom of information, he still feels Assange is a bit of a strange character.
Hard to separate the message from the messenger, but necessary to do so.

BBC - WikiLeaks: The Secret Life of a Superpower (Ep. 1)

Yogi says...

"Richard Bilton uncovers a struggle at the heart of US diplomacy between the ideals of freedom and spreading democracy, and the ruthless demands of American security and narrow self-interest."

Already this is bullshit. America doesn't care about spreading real democracy, only that governments be subservient to them whenever they can. There's decades of evidence and dozens of examples of this. We didn't need Fucking Wikileaks to know this at all.

Good grief someone having a logical non rabidly anti-US thought? You'll be lynched. Of course they dont want him, why go through all that hassle and bad PR this long after the damage is done. He wants to give the impression that the US is desparate to get their hands on him so he can keep his little rapist butt out of prison. Plenty of dumb asses like those who posted bail for the self styled 'freedom fighter' willing to swallow everything he says, and of course theyll be screwed over as well. Just sit back and enjoy the Assange one man show as he gets increasingly desparate for attention.

As for this 'news', an analyst showing interest and sympathy in wikileaks soon after an analyst leaks massive amounts of secret data to said site, and the military reacts with suspicion. Wow, shocking.

If the US justice department wanted Assange, why wouldn't they just request extradition from the UK? Do they need to let the Swedish sex crimes investigation play out first?

Well, he should be properly questioned for whatever he did/did not do. I don't think there's any doubt there. I get the heebeejeebees when they refuse to question him in the Equadorian embassy, and insist he must be extradited. That's sorta where it starts to smell fishy. If they question him and he is found guilty in the end, THEN they should totally extradite him.
His works with wikileaks doesn't absolve him of crimes.
He should, however, in now way be extradited to the US for instance, where he would likely receive a Bradley Manning and be detained until he breaks from it.

If I was Manning I'd be inclined to go down the hunger strike route. How else can he protest his incarceration? And I'm not sure I'd want to cope with the treatment he receives each day.
