That's what Australia does now anyway, so he needs to be hip and join in.

Chomsky dispels 9/11 Conspiracies with Logic

alien_concept says...

>> ^Ornthoron:
There are enough real problems and conspiracies in this world without people inventing new ones. Why not invest time and energy to solve for instance the AIDS problem in Africa? That would actually help real people. But it's much more comfortable to watch cleverly edited youtube videos at home. That way one doesn't have to think.

Exactly! This is what drives me crazy, and I keep saying. Why go out and FIND things to be angry about when we have 100% genuine shit on our doorstep every day

I agree with Chomsky that it's highly improbable the GW Bush administration engineered the entire thing from head to toe, and it was never leaked. If there was any conspiracy happening it was more likely that GWB and friends simply left the back door and looked the other way in terms of security. Why go through the trouble of orchestrating a highly elaborate international black op when you can just ignore guys like Richard Clark, and count the days until something goes down? Perhaps what W was thinking while sitting in that school house on 9/11 was, "Heck, I didn't think they'd make SUCH a ruckus." Of course I'm speculating but I suppose I'm making Chomsky's point, too.

This. (thanks @bookface)

Think of the Iran-Contra scandal. Was Reagan involved? "I Don't recall."

"funds for the Contras, or any affair, the President (or in this case the administration) could carry on by seeking alternative means of funding such as private entities and foreign governments.[47] Funding from one foreign country, Brunei, was botched when North's secretary, Fawn Hall, transposed the numbers of North's Swiss bank account number. A Swiss businessman, suddenly $10 million richer, alerted the authorities of the mistake. The money was eventually returned to the Sultan of Brunei, with interest.[48]<-wikipedia

I guess according to chompsky, Iran contra couldn't have happened either, because it would have been too vast a conspiracy. (Wait, that doesn't prove my point, ahh nevermind)

TDS: World of Class Warfare - The Poor's Free Ride Is Over

I don't think you're that far off. That seems like a reasonable hypothesis. Another thing that comes into play are our affordable "luxuries". Cable TV, microwaves, dishwashers, heating/AC...these things are now things that we risk by protesting/revolting. Why go outside and get shot at when we can watch Cosby reruns for hours on end?

Cosby? Shit, I'd rather get shot at.

the cost of food isn't high enough yet. historically, people are generally complacent with letting the ruling class do whatever as long as they can afford food and expect a reasonably brighter future. i wonder if part of the reason we subsidize agriculture is to keep food prices artificially low longer to avoid social unrest. and then there's fast food. which consistently remains cheap. my paranoid brain is starting to formulate fast food as social control conspiracies. also, google holodomor. and think about monsanto.
i think we've all given up on the "brighter future" part... and food prices keep fluctuating.. it's coming though, don't worry. the rest of us will join you soon. as soon as we can no longer afford a mcrib. >> ^rottenseed:

ReasonTV presents "Ask a Libertarian Day" (Philosophy Talk Post)

Lawdeedaw says...

>> ^blankfist:

Well, history has shown that more individual freedom (less collectivist government) leads to enrichment of lives, protection of the poor, etc. The US government early on was built on some basic and fundamental Libertarian ideas, though back then they were called liberal.
Prior to that, no other human government ever allowed such individual freedom. Not to say the US wasn't plagued with its problems, but it was a step in the right direction. Why go backwards?

I would say Rome did, and Greece. But that was more because of certain circumstances than how a government ran. I.e., we were a land of plenty, slaughtered the Indians, kept slaves to work, and then after those, indentured servants, and then illegal aliens and prisoners. However, those have dried up...

Greece was crap until conquest. Macedonia-what? Oh yeah, that poor state that Alexander came from...

Don't get me wrong, we love our Freedoms Blankfist, but history bodes for the circumstances of a nation--not the people themselves or how it is run. (I wouldn't say that Greece and Rome were particularly generous or freedom oriented, just like I wouldn't say America is.)

Guy goes to hospital for 10 minutes, gets $7000 bill.

why go to the hospital for 3 stitches? how about you rub some dirt on it and man up?

He didn't want a scar on his pretty face.

In all seriousness though, the system is borked. My buddy works as a technician during spinal/neural surgeries. They charge $7000 for a screw.

What all this talk about the rates paid by individuals vs. insurance companies shows is the power of larger pools in negotiations. If we could all negotiate our prices together as a nation, maybe we could work something out that is fair for everybody. Sure, it might cost more than it currently costs those with insurance, but we wouldn't be pushing the costs on to the self/un insured. It's not as though the unconscious guy laying on the hospital bed has much opportunity to shop around and let the free market work its magic.

Lagao multiphysics looks awesomely real

Arkaium says...

I'm going to guess, completely unscientifically and based only on my knowledge of how long it's taken for us to get where we are with video game physics, that we're at least 5 years from anything like this in a video game, but it will probably happen within 10 (not the next console cycle, but possibly the one following). Could certainly be feasible on PCs in 5 years, but it's not like this kind of state-of-the-art tech is easily justified in a mainstream product. When only a small, tiny percentage of PCs have the beef to run it, why go through the extra effort?

Still, should be amazing to see what water effects look like a couple generations from now.

Bristol Palin On Oprah "I'm not Having Sex Until..."

westy says...

If you are going to use the bible as your moral cumpus then your pretty much fucked. for one thing its not constant and its easily open to interpretation what it actually says. its allso very clear that its as likely to be the word of god as any of the other religious books out there which is not very.

to use marrige as a bench mark for who you have sex with is a bit stupid , but at the same time just sleeping with annyone can be quite risky.

there is nothing stopping people shagging and still having something more meaningful and romantic as well especaily if they use protectoin and are carfull about it.

the whole marge thing makes sense when there is no contraception or protection against STD,S and having kids is a 1-10 chance of sex , obviously as it would be unfair for a child to have no parents.

This is why going by the bible is stupid , It was written in a time when there was no contraception and people could not control when they had kids.

by perpetuating this whole no sex before marriage thing you end up with more trouble u end up with girls taking it up the ass more or doing strange sexual things that are of more risk and should only be undertaken by sumone with exsperance and alot of confidence as to what they want or know what they are doing and the risks.

The only message should be ONLY HAVE SEX WITH SUM ONE THAT "YOU" RELAY WANT TO don't be pressured into it or feal that you have to. also only do it after having discussed it with them and once you relay know that person.

having said that im sure there are people who want to just go out and have a quick fuck if that's ohnislty what they want and they make that clear to the person they want to fuck then i dont have a problem with it so long as they ware protectoin and reduse STD pregnancy as much as possable.

Its all about honistiy and presenting things truthfully.

Tom Waits: Everything goes to Hell

gwiz665 says...

Proper lyrics:

Why be sweet, why be careful, why be kind?
A man has only one thing on his mind
Why ask politely, why go lightly, why say please?
They only want to get you on your knees
There's a few things that I never could believe

A woman when she weeps
A merchant when he swears
A thief who says he'll pay
A lawyer when he cares
A snake when he is sleeping
A drunkard when he prays
I don't believe you go to heaven when you're good
And everything goes to hell, anyway

Laissez-faire mi amour, ce la vie
Shall I return to shore or swim back out to sea?
The world don't care what a sailor does in town
It's all hanging in the windows by the pound
I don't believe you go to heaven when you're good
Everything goes to hell, anyway

I only want to hear you purr and to hear you moan
You have another man who brings the money home
I don't want dishes in the sink
Don't ask me what I feel or what I think
There's a few things that I never could believe

A woman when she weeps
A merchant when he swears
A thief who says he'll pay
A lawyer when he cares
A snake when he is sleeping
A drunkard when he prays
I don't believe you go to heaven when you're good
Everything goes to hell, anyway

Everything goes to hell, anyway
Oh, everything goes to hell, anyway
