As far as punishments go, this seems just fine - statutory rape charges are bullshit if they both were willing, but a spanking like that is fair enough, I guess. Walk it off.

For someone who is otherwise such a proponent of democratic principles and liberty I'm surprised that you would rather concentrate disciplinary powers in one person's hands.

And, yes, yes - I am the site owner so I could always come down and blow it all away, so we're just playing. I know. But, there would be a lot more social pressure on me not to interfere, if decisions were meted out fairly without favorotism by the Sift public in some kind of system.

I think I've shown my willingness to let self-rule flourish. And honestly, I'm fascinated by the idea of balancing technology and people to make a more equitable, self-managing community. (even if it's just in our little online niche)

We don't have a pressing epidemic of "name callers" on here that we must deputize the community to help dag sift through the Sift Raft™. Banning probies and spammers is one thing, but banning actual contributing members shouldn't be a democratic process. It'll just lead to favoritism.
I propose we use hobbling when someone seems to be on the attack. As soon as an admin gets on they can look into the situation and listen to BOTH sides. I'm sure by that point the community will know all about the offense and already be weighing in and doing amateur sleuthing to get the facts. After that temp bans and perm bans would follow.

It's one thing to laugh if, a skateboarder messes up a trick and lands with his crotch on a railing, but can walk it off.

It's a very different one if the skateboarder lands face first and is bleeding all over the place, or lands poorly and breaks his arm rather obviously (his arm getting all bent out of shape).

The difference is, people who laugh at the second situation, are sadistic. There's no other way around it. Not to mention if the person getting hurt happens to be a child. Then you're sadistic and cruel.

I would have laughed at this video, if the child landed on a softer surface, like grass maybe, and didn't land head first.

He charged in, the dude kept backing off till the shirtless dude got in close enough for a swing. He missed, and he got smashed in the face right after, that is when he stumbles. You can hear the sound right then as well, sounds like a pop...the sound of flesh on flesh.

I was always raised on the idea of don't start something...but finish it, this is that idea in motion. Barbarism isn't commendable, but when the fight comes looking for you there is not much to be done.

You can actually see him walk it off a little. Once the blood is pumping like that, you can't just stop. Like others mentioned, he showed considerable restraint as you pretty much want to keep going until the opposition isn't moving anymore...its how your brain works.

I find this kind of systematic humiliation of people by a panel of millionaires a bit hard to stomach.

It's not humiliation INFLICTED on them by said panel or audience. They are simply given the opportunity to be on TV provided that they sing remarkably badly, wear something stupid, or stuff a dildo in their jeans. So it's not even really humiliation. Are clowns humiliated? No, they're psychologically damaged enough to enjoy getting attention for being creepy and pathetic. And as terrifying as it is, there are a lot of people out there with a clown mentality.


These people haven't just walked in off the street, they've been hand picked to be laughed at by the nation. A friend of mine, who is a bit of a fruit loop.. well a total fruit loop and a shockingly bad singer, nearly got on this. She's a very sensitive soul and she would have been crushed to know she was being groomed as a exhibit for a modern day freak show. I'm sure many of us have people we care about with delusions of talent, would we want them to throw themselves to a televised mob?

Even if these phycologicaly damaged people want the attention (and is it okay to laugh at phycologically damaged people, really?) we have to consider our motives and the effect on us. Feeding our appetite for cruelty based entertainment (and watching some poor sap have their dreams crapped on is just not nice) is a bad road to go down. These's been a real proliferation of this kind of show and I think it's turning us into school yard bullies taunting the weaker kids.... And clowns at least get paid, these guys don't.
