Orangutan Playing with Lego

Fantomas says...

Not sure about the downvotes, but the movement of the Orangutan seemed off, especially when picking up and placing the blocks.

A bit of googling confirmed it.

How can you tell? (is that why it has so many down votes on YT?)

Even if it is in reverse, the deconstruction is done in a very logical way.

Bill Maher and Colbert - Police Culture has to change

Babymech says...

To be honest I didn't read all of your reply because you said you were done, so I don't think you'll respond further I'll just address the tail-end - the noun-switching thing is really stupid.

If I say our police aren't performing to the standards we require, you don't help the dialogue by switching out the word police for 'blacks', 'jews', or 'hydrogen atoms'. For one, a police force is something we choose to have; we have created the police force for specific reasons. These specific reasons come with minimum requirements, which we need to keep track of to make sure we didn't make the wrong choice. Secondly, we have responsibility for our police force, to make sure they have the training and support to continue to serve their original goals, because nobody gets into police work with the dream of being on the wrong end of a viral video about shooting innocents.

You can't switch out the word police for 'blacks' or 'hydrogen atoms' because that's idiotic. You can switch out the word police for 'nurses,' 'fire fighters,' etc, because those are comparable groups, that we need to monitor, support, and hold accountable.

Nothing of what I say paints every police officer as equally in the wrong. That's like saying it's wrong to sound the alert for occasional nuclear meltdowns, because that ignores all the times we don't have meltdowns. If our reactor works fine 6 days of the week, but has a critical failure once a week, that's a problem, and needs to be addressed, even though the other 6 days are fine.

Also, a short note here...and then I am done. I find that any statement I make should be able to switch around nouns and if it sounds horrible with another noun in its place, you probably don't a statement worth shit.

For example, "Blacks are thugs." Replace that with, "Police are thugs." The statement itself is stupid, regardless of who it is applied too. Your statement about seeing what the police really do...like saying we see what blacks really do...is worthless....mostly because it claims them all into one group of equal do-evil.

The Viral Experiment - The Woolshed Company

Babymech says...

Pretty tenuous to call this an experiment... What hypothesis were they testing, that people watch and share exciting content? That video editing technology is fairly advanced by now but certainly not flawless?

They seem to start off with some media criticism - 'how much of the news should you believe -' but then lose that trail since A) all of their videos were questioned and called out by many as fake, and B) everybody already knows that the 'news' section of the show is over when the anchors are just reacting to fun videos they found online.

I'm fine with this video being an example of well scripted VFX to maximize virality for virtality's sake, but it's pretty goofy to call it an experiment. The best part was the cameo by TV's Frank.

Sweet Revenge

My fear is, that after this video went viral, if not before, she may have been fired for her actions.

I agree with others, that too many prank videos these days are more bullying than the Hidden Camera days of pranks and jokes... and I'm not saying the art form can't evolve, but there's a pretty clear line between prank and bully and way too many of these prank channels bully far more than they prank.

i wish i was her manager so i could give her a goddamn raise, promotion, and letter of recommendation to corporate demanding they pay her tuition, provide a grant, a scholarship, whatever else corporate toolbags get that she don't got -- i dunno free executive level dental and health care? until that happened, i would sacrifice 100 oxen in hecatomb to her every night. it's really the least i could do with my father's oxen empire, if i was a fast food manager and heir to an oxen empire.

Woman almost hits biker by merging, gets caught by cops

Babymech says...

She's risking people's lives and needs to learn or lose her license.

I'm also pleasantly surprised (and surprised at my surprise) that he's not monetizing this video aggressively. For some reason I'm annoyed at this brave new internet where every viral dashcam video has a legal notice ("For licensing and media inquiries, contact..."), so I was happy to see him just tell the world that we can do whatever. This is not something I thought I'd be surprised by.

Is this really worth involving police in? I am with him for a honk or two, a bit of cursing and giving opulent instructions on how to acquire better driving habits. Then get on with your life.

A person of their word!

I miss him so much. Fallon has fun games. Corden has great viral videos. Colbert still does the political stuff.

But I'll still take Craigy Ferg any day. He wasn't perfect (like Colbert, he would interrupt too much in order to be funny). But just his cold opens without the forced applause.... a balm on my soul.

Thanks.

CNN anchor reads Survivor's Statement on air

bareboards2 says...

I have also linked this in the description, so people don't have to read the comments to find this link:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/6/6/1534962/-The-daunting-and-powerful-statement-a-Stanford-victim-reads-to-her-rapist-in-court-goes-viral

Here is part of the full statement that was excised for time -- part of where she responds to the defendant's statement, point by point:

You said, Being drunk I just couldn’t make the best decisions and neither could she.

Alcohol is not an excuse. Is it a factor? Yes. But alcohol was not the one who stripped me, fingered me, had my head dragging against the ground, with me almost fully naked. Having too much to drink was an amateur mistake that I admit to, but it is not criminal. Everyone in this room has had a night where they have regretted drinking too much, or knows someone close to them who has had a night where they have regretted drinking too much. Regretting drinking is not the same as regretting sexual assault. We were both drunk, the difference is I did not take off your pants and underwear, touch you inappropriately, and run away. That’s the difference.

You said, If I wanted to get to know her, I should have asked for her number, rather than asking her to go back to my room.

I’m not mad because you didn’t ask for my number. Even if you did know me, I would not want be in this situation. My own boyfriend knows me, but if he asked to finger me behind a dumpster, I would slap him. No girl wants to be in this situation. Nobody. I don’t care if you know their phone number or not.

You said, I stupidly thought it was okay for me to do what everyone around me was doing, which was drinking. I was wrong.

Again, you were not wrong for drinking. Everyone around you was not sexually assaulting me. You were wrong for doing what nobody else was doing, which was pushing your erect dick in your pants against my naked, defenseless body concealed in a dark area, where partygoers could no longer see or protect me, and own my sister could not find me. Sipping fireball is not your crime. Peeling off and discarding my underwear like a candy wrapper to insert your finger into my body, is where you went wrong. Why am I still explaining this.

CGP Grey - You Are Two (Brains)

dannym3141 says...

When right brain picks up a Rubik's cube because it was asked to, left brain has no knowledge of that. So when the Rubik's cube is passed into the hand controlled by left brain, how does left brain know to even receive the item? Is it acting on habit - i.e. it's so used to cooperating with left brain and body parts that it accepts things left brain offers? And in that case, is the incorrect explanation from left brain influenced by what it thinks right brain wants? For favourite colour - is each side influenced by what it thinks the other prefers?

I suspect viral marketing techniques like anthropomorphising body parts is taking away slightly from the truth. It's a fun conclusion that captures the imagination to say that there are two entities, one in thrall to the other, but we are talking about a malfunctioning brain so the conclusions need careful consideration. These type of things can be a little economical with the truth to paint a better picture, I know the physics ones are on occasion.
