Welcome to the uphill battle.

I can't agree with this.
Either you are a career person or you are a stay at home parent.
A dedication to the job at hand lets you succeed. No one can be expected to do both and be expected to excel at the same rate as the person who just chooses one. (male or female).
In Canada, yes, Men can get paternity, though most women would never give up their maternity to let them. (Only one parent can claim.) My wife took the maternity rights.
Yes, I was a stay at home dad (for a time) - and it was socially accepted - in fact I was commended!
NO! Woman are not expected to do the most - where do you get that from???
If the spouse isn't pulling their weight, it's a communication/relationship issue - talk to the spouse, don't blame "society" for something you let happen. (male or female)
Most of the (domestic)work falls to who ever is home with the kids, that's the way it is. Someone has to be there at some point. And when the other spouse gets home, they chip in, in equal portions. If they don't, then that says more about the relationship than society. By the way, while one spouse is at home working for the home, the other is out working to pay for it - It's not like they are away from the home avoiding responsibility).
This whole dad goes to work and brings home the bacon while mom stays home with the kids just DOESN'T exist in the real world for the average family. If you believe that, you're kidding yourself. No one can exist on a single income any more. If they can, then it's a privilege for the spouse who gets to spend the time at home with the kids and should thank the other spouse every day for their good fortune. (male or female) !!!
>> ^Tagichatn:
Men have children too, so why do women get picked on? Apparently it's "false logic" according to westy that women can have a full family and a full professional career but it's pretty easy for men. That's because even today, in 2010, women are generally expected to do most, if not all, of the care for the children. Men don't get paternity leave, being a stay at home dad isn't really socially accepted so it falls to the mother to do most of the work. It's not the 50's anymore so women at least have the option of maintaining a career but there's still that belief that the mom does the housework while the dad brings home the money.

It's great that in your relationship things were shared and done equally but how many times do I have to say this? Anecdotes don't matter! My mom was a stay at home mom so therefore 1950's housewives are clearly widespread! Anyway, that's not even my argument. I readily admit that 2 income households have come to dominate but my point is that the 1950's style of thinking still dominates. Even in 2 income households where both parents work and should therefore split the load of housework and childcare, women still are expected
to do the majority of the housework.

You said you've never seen women working for less. I can't speak for Canada but this is from the US Census: http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/censusandstatistics/a/paygapgrows.htm
From a related study based on the census, "Even accounting for factors such as occupation, industry, race, marital status and job tenure, reports the GAO, working women today earn an average of 80 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts."

Too bad not every women works with you, otherwise they would totally be equal and it wouldn't be a problem!

2 income homes are not equal either. Women do more work and men have more leisure time on average. Here's a survey done by the New York times: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/15/politics/15labor.html

You can post about your personal experiences all day but your experiences are not everyone elses. This is a societal problem, anecdotes don't tell the full story.

Engine Explodes During Uphill Stunt

God/Allah didn't want that vehicle to climb that hill.. for if you climb the hill too high, you will be too close for comfort. God/Allah doesn't like you getting so close to him in the sky.
If you think an exploding engine is bad. Just try building a Tower in Babylon. Go too high, and all peoples will be cursed to speak different languages and the tower will be vaporized.
Of course.. these days.. for some reason Allah likes skyscrapers. Not quite the same thing as the Tower of Babylon I guess. Oh well... and about the whole language thing. Well.. we just learn more than one language. But other than that... I guess God/Allah was well intentioned. Now don't cross him any further. Or he'll jihad your ass and you'll be smokin in a fiery pit for all eternity. So be good.

I've seen these comments a few times and I'm having a hard time understanding them.
The last time, it was a religious nut being sarcastic about all hatred being the fault of religion, or some such misery. This is another kind of incitement, but the shared trait is that it's completely inappropriate for the video and has no discernible purpose other than to be snarky and cause a religious shitstorm. What's the point?

Does this video have a point? So why does a comment need to have a point? Methinks your expectations of a video clip of an exploding engine may be a tad high. This is no intellectual symposium my friend. Enjoy the exploding engine with scurrying screaming Arabs.

Negative Badges (Controversy Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

Actually, if the "negative" badges were done as a temporary thing, they could work to promote the wanted behavior out of users, obviously there are a few moral quandries about "forcing" people that way, but if done delicately, it could work.

"Spammer/blah blah" - 15+ comments in a row without positive votes
"Uphill battle" - 10 videos went straight to PQ
"Hoarder" - 100+ videos in the PQ
"Doppelgänger" - posted 5+ videos which were dupes (and dupeoffed)
"AWOL" - no videos sifted, no comments made, no votes cast in the last month
"Lurker" - no videos or comments posted
"Big P / Here's what I think" - no videos posted, many comments

Positive:
"on a roll" - X videos in a row gone straight to top 15

Bob Saget Does An Old English Folk Song

Porksandwich says...

More power to you, I am not sure if either version of the song is "as old as the hills" or one of those "when I was your age" uphill, snow, man eating rabbits stories that some how is supposed to make the story true because it might be old.

Hope you at least checked out the animated version before deciding. Personally I look at it like paid performer Bob Saget ran out of material, so I hope the song is old or he's not giving someone credit.

Reminds me of.....which with the animation is a better version.
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/460854

Ugh sorry to be picky, but when i hear someone say that an animated, modernised version of a folk song posted on newgrounds is better than a man sat singing a song as old as the hills to a crowd of laughing people using an instrument as old as the hills, i die a little inside

Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) "The Trapeze Swinger"

calvados says...

http://lyrics.wikia.com/Iron_&_Wine:The_Trapeze_Swinger

Please remember me happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin
The time when we counted every black car passing

Your house beneath the hill and up until
Someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention

But please remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say that the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti

Like 'We'll meet again' and 'Fuck the man'
And 'Tell my mother not to worry'
And angels with their gray handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry

And please remember me at Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white by midnight
We'd forgotten one another

And when the morning came, I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
But now you're lit up by the city

So please remember me mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower call
Then pass us by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour

Gleam and resonate just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like 'Lost and Found' and 'Don't Look Down'
And 'Someone Save Temptation'

And please remember me as in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Aside the lions and the ladies

That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
Swinger high as any savior

But please remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running

In circles 'round the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter's
So bright on cinder gray and spray paint
'Who the hell can see forever?'

And please remember me seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turn from me
And said the trapeze act was wonderful

But never meant to last, the clowns that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
Had an element of danger

So please remember me, finally
And all my uphill clawing, my dear
But if I make the pearly gates
Do my best to make a drawing

Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around the frightened trapeze swingers

Samoa Tsunami - Jesus Rebuke The Waves

Phonecium says...

^Not at all, but not unlike the faith anyone devout or solidified in their convictions maintains, a simplistic argument like the one above is enough to satisfy the laziest of minds.

Some pray for death, others wealth, others for the ultimate salvation of mankind in the form of a working knowledge of the mechanics of the universe. Prayer is meditation however remedial one might perceive another's process to be.

Naomi Wolf - Not Even Obama Can Take On Special Interests

NetRunner says...

I think if Democrats used the filibuster the way Republicans do, they never would have gotten immunity. Democrats were the majority at the time after all.

As far as Obama's own personal role, there's a lot to look at with the immunity question, and goodness knows I've poured through a lot of reporting on it, and my take on it is that Obama knew that there were enough lobbyist-loving, Constitution-ignoring, Republican-fearing Democratic Senators who were gonna vote for immunity that it would pass no matter how Obama voted.

He also was doing this whole run for the Presidency thing, and knew that if he voted against FISA's renewal, the right-wing noise machine would use this as an excuse to call him Weak on TerrorTM. Never mind that even at that time they were already toying with the whole "paling around with terrorists" shtick, but this was pre-Palin, so it hadn't been put out by any McCain people directly yet.

So Obama said "I'll try to get immunity out of the bill, but I'm going to vote for the final bill, regardless of whether immunity is in there", knowing that the likelihood of the immunity-stripping amendments passing the inevitable Republican filibuster were slim, and then voted for the final bill, because he knew he wouldn't be able to stop it anyways.

Still, I think Klein is right, Obama has a serious uphill battle with special interests going forward, and progressives need to fight fire with fire on that count. I just disagree with her conclusion that Obama's already failed to stand up to corporate special interests since he voted for the final FISA bill that contained telecomm immunity.

The Truth About U.S. Drug Laws

Aniatario says...

^Duckman, Hear hear! Although the laws against Weed are not as strictly enforced here in Canada as they are in the States, we cannot ignore the money being spent on laws that are both impractical and impossible to enforce.

I can only hope that these ridiculous laws will be repealed within my lifetime. Its a nice image; that in the distant future I might sit down with friends and loved ones and have a smoke without any fear of prosecution or stigma.

We're fighting an uphill battle my friends, but believe me when I tell you that the grass shall be greener on the other side.
