Sword and Kama forms

TheFreak says...

wtf is this?

The thing is, the traditional arts related to that sword have not died out. They're still practiced. You can literally go on youtube and see exactly what a strike with that sword looks like.

It doesn't look anything like that.

Why did you need to replace the cheerleading batons with fake weapons? All those moves are just as impressive with sticks and a whole hell of a lot less embarrassing for everyone involved.

most epicly filmed glowsticking video you will ever see

Ryjkyj says...

OK, my last comment was an attempt at humor, but as a person with almost thirty years of experience swinging around toys attached to the end of strings, I feel I have the authority to lay down the law a little bit:

First of all, "Poi" started as a traditional art form but has grown into something completely different. There are many different styles, techniques, levels of performance and materials used. Someone who is "serious" about Poi (aside from being a douche bag) might consider "fire Poi" to be the ultimate goal. Obviously, this girl would burn her arms of if she attempted these tricks with fire. But her "art" uses a child's toy, and her techniques are appropriate for that purpose. She's actually got some interesting and even fairly unique stuff going on here.

Obviously the "world peace" video intro is a little over the top but I would say her facial expression is the look of someone who's focusing, not necessarily entertaining. All in all, I'd say she's pretty talented.

I just feel that it's my duty to point out that the only real marked difference between this girl and the million other "Poi-glo-spin-light-fire-sticking" idiots is this: She's the only one on youtube who seems to have a friend with a "passion" for using a light-meter and a decent f-ing camera.

Martial Arts Instructor Beats Up His Students

NordlichReiter says...

What the hell? This is the worst crap I've ever seen. Hes a Fat numb nuts who does not deserve to teach any classes any where. Look at that ridiculous hair, most traditional Dojo that teach traditional arts (Judo, karate Do, JuJutsu, Aikido, AikiJutsu, and the respective sword schools) have rules about how the hair can be worn. Long hair must be in a ponytail, fingernails must be trimmed, feet must be clean, and clothes must be in good shape(washed regularly).

A school that is like this, is not a Dojo. A Dojo has a kamiza, practice area, places for equipment, and a quiet atmosphere even when practicing.

This guy needs to be put in his place, very harshly. With prejudice as the lawyers say.

I don't downvote, but I wont vote for this.

Yeah I train locally here in NJ with an Aikido club associated with the USAF, I try to make it to NY's dojo whenever I can and take Yamada's class. When I was in Florida I trained with Donovan and many other great USAF and ASU senseis. It's been about 4 years for me, I purposely haven't tested but I usually help out with teaching beginners and train alongside 1st kyus and sho/nidans. I'm very lucky to have a 6th Dan as my instructor locally though!

In reply to this comment by NordlichReiter:
Do you train in any Japanese Traditional arts?

I train in ASU - Aikido in the DC area, I saw your vids and Bio and thought I would ask.

Bill Maher's Take on the WGA Strike

Doc_M says...

If those execs aren't complete morons, they'll cave for now at least. We all want our Lost dammit! I'd spot some cash right now to get things back on the air if it were so simple.

I recently heard a computer programmer comment on this strike, and he said he thought the execs ought eventually to try to seek the deal that software companies have with programmers, that is: You write the code we pay you to write, then we own it, period. Salary... or per instance, but no profit sharing. Once you wrote what we paid you to write, it is ours... Outside of the traditional "arts", that is the way that business works.

On the other hand perhaps the "new arts" (those being programing and game-making perhaps) ought to seek the deal Hollywood has. heh.

Which way do we want things to go? thoughts?

Motion Graphics @ SVA: The New Dimension of Graphic Design

Farhad2000 says...

Yeah but real time rendering solutions only have two domains really, demo work as you mentioned and possible future integration into video games, I believe Spore for example has alot of developers from the demo scene working on procedural rendering in real time instead of pre-rendered art assets, because the scope of the game would make make traditional art asset creation too expensive and costly.

This is definitely something every major developer should really get into, in order to reduce the spiraling costs of video game development. Current trends would only lead to more of the same experiences rather then exploring the possibilities. Okay I'll stop now before I write a book.

This however is motion graphics for the medium of television and short productions. MTV used to be on the cutting edge of this before totally becoming corporate.
