Godzilla - Official Trailer 2014

SDGundamX says...

This trailer didn't really get me excited for the movie. Props to them for keeping the "man in the suit" feel to the Godzilla design but I guess I'm too old school. I agree with a commenter from another website that they should have set it in Tokyo and the movie should have been in Japanese with really bad dubbing in a further homage to the genre.

I would have been more excited if the trailer looked something like this:

EDIT: Plus it's just not Godzilla for me without DAT MUSIC!

Introduction to Board Games

RFlagg says...

King of Tokyo, Zombicide, Escape, Mansions of Madness, BSG the Board Game, Mice and Mystics (great co-operative game), X-Wing Miniatures game, Android: Netrunner (perhaps best 2 player game out there), Arkham Horror are just a few of the better games on my board game shelf... want to try 7 Wonders and many others... I play Small World, Forbidden Island, Eclipse, Ascension, and Summoner Wars on my iPad
Catan is a decent game, and does well as a gateway (I think Ticket to Ride is better, and perhaps even Pandemic)...
Love board gaming...

The Japanese Bullet Train - Shinkansen

oohlalasassoon says...

Visited my brother there in 2006 and we took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima. And you're right, they're a lot of fun. Just super cool. Definitely a different type of experience than say, this -- although sticking your head out a window and getting coal embers in your eye has its own charm.

A few years ago the family went to Japan for a couple of weeks and we bought a Japan rail pass. The Shinkansen are just an amazingly fun experience. Especially when you can just hop on or off with a pass. If you have kids - I highly recommend the experience.

Crow Trolls Polar Bear

When I visited Tokyo, those crows [look more like ravens] were one of the coolest unexpected attractions. They're all over the parks and they're very smart.

Customer Service In Japan . . . Wait for it

I was visiting Tokyo like 15 years ago, and me and my friend were in the subway looking at the maps - probably coming off as a bit confused. And then this old Japanese lady hobbles up to us and asks, in rough English, if we needed any help. Those people are amazing.

This scene is based on a true story: Hachikō
"In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took in Hachikō, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. During his owner's life, Hachikō greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachikō was waiting. Every day for the next nine years the dog waited at Shibuya station."

And there is a film with Richard Gere based on this story: Hachi: A Dog's Tale - Wiki and Trailer
