So you start a pulse jet with a leaf blower?

Mostly yes, the idea behind most jets is to compress incoming air with fuel. No spark is needed as the compression causes heat. The problem is you need the air already moving to start. The same is true of turbofan engines of most jet airplanes. In my day they used electric motors to start the fan blade spinning. Once they are up to speed, they feed enough air fast enough into the combustion chambers to keep it going. A leave blower is a lot easier to add to a project then an electric motor. If you look up DIY jet engines in youtube, you will see it as the staple for home brew jet starters.
Jets are much more "simple" then combustion engines as they are mainly self sustaining when up to speed. They are very complex in other ways though, like how to not melt down under extreme heat and such. A flame out at low speed typically spells doom for a jet...engine restarts when careening downward is not as experience you want in life.
One thing I have never understood about a pulse jet is how to ramp your speed up. With a turbofan, you just up the fan speed or fan blade pitch...with a pulse just I have no idea. Add more fuel maybe? If that were the case, then the max speed would be dictated by the explosion maximum. If your explosion is to great, you risk vibration annihilation or destruction of your combustion chamber...or you spit the hot air out the back end before the pulse can bring it back for re-ignition? Or perhaps it has to do with pulse modulation and changing how long you wait till your open the valve. The longer you wait, the more thrust you get before the next cycle? Dunno, pulse jets were always more of a curiosity than an area of study.
Edit: Jets are very similar to diesel engine as there is no spark needed...all the heat is gained through compression. Hope that isn't TMI at this point

Though your knowledge of jets is impressive. Let's really try to stomp this sign of the internet generation out, shall we?! Who's with me!?

Videosift is really a MMO. I been playing for close to 3 years. I remember all the patch fixes and large code deployments still. Its not the same, I miss the green orange classic graphics and the admins keep nerfing everything.

That is so true, when I finally kicked the WoW habit, this is what I spend most of my goofing off time doing, plus I get the weekends off and don't have to raid!!!

TMI I'm sure.

[Edit:] Damn, curiosity got the best of me from reading the comments, The nationalized health care really does stick out as the worst point she makes. Here in Ontario the way health care works is we're covered by O.H.I.P. (Ontario Health Insurance Policy) And the way it works is that if you -NEED- something, you get it.

Broken arm, baby delivery, emergency situations from accidents, ambulance rides, brain surgery, hell, this may be a bit TMI but even women who get very heavy periods (to the point of severe pain) can have their uterus taken out, ect. are all covered indefinately.

Things you DON'T need, strictly cosmetic plastic surgery, (and now due to cuts in the policy) Dental, and Eye checkups ect. are not covered by O.H.I.P. but are generally covered under policies provided by employers. (Well, the dental and eye exams anyway.)

This isn't like insurance companies in the states, the province doesn't decide that what you're getting is too expensive and therefore you've lived a good life, everyone is covered, even if you're not employed, and that's probably what the American system would be like, in my opinion.

The only problem I see with switching to a Nationalized health care system is that at the start, since you'll be having people going to the doctors for things they couldn't before (people who couldn't afford things like kemo ect.) will now be able to, and you'll have an influx of patients at the same time.

After a couple years of the system though, on the whole the amount of people going should be in decline and you should actually see a much healthier America.

And Generally when a country gets over-populated, they don't start out killing off elders. They limit the amount of children you can have. Which, and this to some may sound incredibly cold, may be a good thing if the ban on stem cell research gets lifted. If that ban becomes lifted and a limit ever goes into effect, if you attempt to concieve another child then the fetus is forfeit for stem cells. I may have just come across as a cold, cold bastard, but rather then bring another child into an overpopulated world, you potentially just saved the life of one of its citizens.

"Sorry, but wtf? They feel they can't afford to be vulnerable, themselves, real? Are you saying that their need to remain attractive forces them to act in a certain way? That's just vanity." [quoting dannym3141]

in my experience, the need to remain SAFE (sometimes emotionally, sometimes physically) forces me to act a certain way at times, closing off my natural openness in meeting people for one thing. gaining weight or losing weight at different times to try to be invisible, body modifications that put people off, not taking care of my appearance at all -- those are some of the options i've exercised to avoid "flattering" attention based solely on my looks. i'm NOT saying i've ever been one of the uber-hot, btw. but i can empathize with them based on my own experiences.

sorry if that was TMI, but that's a lot of what i like at VS: real thought-and-discussion-provoking videos, not *just* cute kittens, though that's great too.

Just read this, it's months old

EVERYONE needs to protect themselves and be careful to be safe. That you think you have more to lose, or more at risk, just reinforces your vanity.

If you want to come back and say "i have a greater risk of being raped than this fat girl" then i'll say sure - but you also have a lower risk of being attacked, a higher chance of being defended if you're attacked, etc. etc.

And if you say "i have a higher risk of being raped than you (you're a girl, i'm a boy, no that isn't a chat-up line!)" Then i'll say fine, true, but you also have less chance of being attacked in pretty much any situation which can lead to an attack. That's huge.

I'm not calling you vain, i don't know you, and you could be speaking "on behalf" of some imaginary hottie. But if a hot person says to me that they are at greater risk of being safe, that is indicative of them being vain and THINKING they have more to lose. "If you get punched in the face you're good to go, but me? Well that's a big loss baby!"

I'm only sending this because you enjoy sift discussion, it's old and past and i'm just sadly bringing it back up.

Sleeping Cat makes me giggle!

laura says...

I once had a white Persian cat (named "Kitty", of course) who slept like that sometimes. I have a photo of it somewhere...
She was kinda weird. She also enjoyed racing over to a lizard on the ground and sitting on it, squirming her bottom while it thrashed to get free until it was pale and lifeless. I'll say no more.
In fact, that was probably TMI.

Hey Snoozedoctor,

Thanks for the reply. That helped me out a great deal! I'm having a "hydrocele repair" (hope thats not tmi) and was told I would be fully out for it. I've never had that before so I was a little worried but I feel more reassured now. Its only an over night stay in hospital so I'm guessing it wont be too bad. Thats a great profile name too, highly appropriate! Thanks again!
