Actually, if you read the ST post, you'll see that's how it's always been.

Initially the spoiler body was just hidden, but people complained it was too hard to know that the hidden text was there, so I added the square brackets to indicate that there's hidden text there.

I didn't use angled brackets when displaying because then it could confuse and foul up the logic when quoting and replying, etc.
