For What It's Worth

Well here's some figures on the Iraq war anyhow. I can't find a number of Iraqi combatants killed so it's hard to create a percentage, but I think, given the numbers 90% is a pretty low guesstimate, it looks more like 95-98% if you exclude the official US count (which I think is pretty safe because they've been playing games with those numbers since the war started).
"the death estimate was revised to 1,033,000 with a given range of 946,000 to 1,120,000." - ORB survey
The Lancet survey (two years old I think) had the number around 600,000
The US government has the number a little over 100,000

Do you have links for those figures? I was looking on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Iraq_War and didn't see anything like 1,120,000 deaths.... oh actually... here at the top it says 1,033,000.

OK, so that means that if there are 31,528 military casualties then the civilian casualties top out at 97.04% of total. But harder to say with any certainty.

Still, why bother with made up numbers?

I experienced an earthquake today! (Science Talk Post)

blankfist says...

Yes, I live in LA, so we get a fair share of them on occasion. I'm originally from North Carolina, so when I came out here about nine years ago I tripped out when I experienced my first earthquake in Burbank. I was looking out of my window at all the palm trees shaking, the car alarms going off, and this eerie pause of silence. Then a transformer ignited (not the "more than meets the eyes" kind)into this beautifully slow burning orb of fire. Then it ended.

Since then all the others have paled in comparison. It's good to get them, though, because that means the plates are releasing pressure. Glad you're okay, iwastheturkey.

The Orb: Little Fluffy Clouds

Thylan says...

Great song indeed, was just about to submit it, so heres the post I was preping:

The Orb

From the tracks Wiki:

"Little Fluffy Clouds" is centered around clips from an interview with Rickie Lee Jones in which she recalls to LeVar Burton picturesque images of her childhood. Critics and fans sometimes attribute the odd nasal tonality of Rickie Lee Jones' voice to drug use, though Jones later claimed that it was the result of a heavy cold. The sample comes from "A Conversation with Rickie Lee Jones", an interview featured on a promotional 2-CD edition of the Flying Cowboys album.

Burton: "What were the skies like when you were young?"

Jones: "They went on forever – They - When I w- We lived in Arizona, and the skies always had little fluffy clouds in 'em, and, uh... they were long... and clear and... there were lots of stars at night. And, uh, when it would rain, it would all turn - it- They were beautiful, the most beautiful skies as a matter of fact. Um, the sunsets were purple and red and yellow and on fire, and the clouds would catch the colors everywhere. That's uh, neat cause I used to look at them all the time, when I was little. You don't see that. You might still see them in the desert."

Jones was upset at the unauthorized use of her voice and pursued the issue in the legal system. Big Life chose to settle out of court for an undisclosed sum of money for use of her voice on The Orb's recording.

The song also uses a harmonica sample from Ennio Morricone's The Man With The Harmonica (from the film Once Upon a Time in the West) and parts of Electric Counterpoint ,a piece for multitracked guitars composed by Steve Reich and recorded by Pat Metheny. Reich, unlike Jones, was "genuinely flattered" by The Orb's use of his work and instructed his record company not to sue.Alex Paterson has also mentioned that fans would "die" if they discovered where the drums on "Little Fluffy Clouds" originated from.

Interesting how influential well made cinematics can be, especially since they have no actual bearing on gameplay content. No but it looks like an interesting action rpg, hopefully they also make it just a bit more tactical that spamming frozen orb or whatever in Diablo 2.

Playing with a tin of ferrofluid

I think this is about what it would feel like to buy one of those tiny bottles of ferrofluid online after seeing huge vats of the stuff create towering spirals and spiky orbs. And I kind of want to buy one of those tiny bottles, so I posted this video.

Cool Street Show in japan

the thing is, he is actually turning the orb , it is just polished (and lubricated) just right so that it looks like it does not move at all. pretty simple to do with a nice big clear marble and some baby oil, making it appear to not shift around at all, is really hard though

Spaceships in medieval painting in Serbia

Han_Duet says...

Hey folks, I'm new here.
Notice how the "craft" on the right has a distinct crescent moon shape to it, while the one on the left is more or less an enclosed orb. The narrator also mentions that the figure in the craft on the right is looking back at the one behind him. In many cultures there are folklore tales about the sun "chasing" the moon across the sky. Sometimes the sun catches up and thats when eclipses occur.
