Ya, statutory rape is such a misuse of the word rape. We all know what rape is; it is one of the most violating acts a human can perform on another short of murder. Statutory rape tries to steal some of the thunder from the word rape to trump up what is really happening. What is funny is that doesn't hold for things like murder, IE, accidental murder gets a verbiage downgrade to manslaughter in most states. Statutory rape, in the case of young people having sex with other young people, is just a taboo that has been criminalized. Most DA's "USE" the charge to get young people that they feel are a danger locked up for longer and forced into an albatross.

If one were to take a real look into the sexual going's on's of our high schools and middle schools, most of the student base would be in jail and a sex offender. In reality, from what I have seen, this charge ONLY gets used as a DA's last resort to get someone...much akin to Al Capone's tax indictment. The law isn't supposed to "send a message" it is supposed to "do a job" and that job is justice. Justice is blind and as such isn't supposed to trump up charges to ruin some peoples lives so that other people "get the message".

With all that said, I got the raw end of bullies in school so I sympathize. But lets hope the culprits get brought up on the right charges, not the charges that satisfies emotions.

I think it's fair to tax weed or plants you buy from a business. I also think that the lure of sales-tax money might help politicians get over their fear of publicly dealing with this taboo subject, especially in a recession.

It wouldn't make much sense to tax those who grown their own.

But I'm not sure the cartoon is saying that anyone should abandon their individuality, that the good of the many always outweigh the good of the few or that being an individual is reckless and selfish. That's just one person's interpretation, namely the writer of the article's. I'm not sure that the cartoon was meant to politically manipulate children, that's also just the interpretation of the writer and inflammatory rethoric. Such wording is more likely to make me think the writer has some axe to grind with the production company than to expose the cartoon as maliciously subversive. To me it reads as if he's simply taken the positive messages the cartoon tried to promote, like the importance of friendship and working together, and just spun it to show it in a negative light. I'm sure there's just as much of a case to be made there about how each of the characters is uniquely individual in the series and how you can be different from everyone and still get along. After all, being an individual doesn't mean one has to forfeit all forms of cooperation with others.

You can spin just about anything negatively, but that doesn't mean that children will pick up on it and lose their sense of self-worth. More likely than not, they'll pick up on the larger, highlighted and predominant themes of the show. Like you said, He-man had to take time out of the cartoon to sit down and really illustrate why smoking was bad, and that didn't make you avoid the cigs.
The guilt you felt from starting to smoke, however, could have come from a hundred different places, and probably did. I don't think the only reason for those feelings was from the ending of a cartoon episode you saw as a child, and I don't think you do either. Smoking has been somewhat of a social taboo for a long time, and even people who do it know that it's bad for them and that they'd be better off quitting. That's something kids are much more likely to pick up on.

Moral laws makes slaves of the people who practice taboo freedoms...social laws makes slaves of us all.

I really don't get all the criticism of Avatar. No, the plot wasn't original. Avatar just offered an unoriginal narrative better than it's predecessors.

This concept of 'white guilt' is intriguing to me. Railing against a film for supposedly rehashing that white guilt even moreso. Native Americans WERE almost wiped out by (exclusively) white folks interested in land and resources. This is not to say you should feel guilty today - but it does make me wonder why discussing it (or including it in a movie plot) should be so taboo. Don't be so sensitive. (As an aside, this kind of resource grabbing at the expense of native populations continues to this day.)

How dare Cameron make a film we don't all love. The audacity! How dare Cameron portray unbridled greed and environmental destruction in a negative light. What an asshole! What gives him the right to make films I am not obligated to watch?!?!? How dare he not make a perfect film! Doesn't he know we have all made such a huge emotional investment in him since Aliens/T2/The Abyss that we expect nothing less than perfection from him?!?

-Mr. Fantastic Fox
-The Hangover
-Capitalism (Not Moore's best, but any film that attempts to make honest discussion of capitalism less taboo in American culture earns my respect. Despite a meandering structure and the inclusion of youtube videos on the big screen, there is plenty to like here.)

Worst (It's pretty easy to avoid bad movies these days, but I managed to see a few)

-Antichrist - I usually like movies by Lars, but he seems to have purposely made this ode to genital mutilation to be unlikable/unwatchable, which must make its inclusion in my list a badge of honor. Well done, you sick pretentious fuck.
-Paranormal Activity - At 90 minutes, this over-hyped D grade student film was 70 minutes too long, with across the board failings in direction, acting and writing categories..... but still infinitely better than....
-2012 - One of the worst films I've ever seen. Mind bogglingly dumb, boring and entirely too long. Even the elaborate, expensive CGI/action sequences were lifeless, dull and uninspired. Zero entertainment value. When you can't make the destruction of the Earth even vaguely entertaining, you should probably stop making movies.

what's relivent is

a) did you harm a real world person
b) are you actually a paedophile that is trying to indulge your urge to actually go and have sex with real children

a) no harm was done
b) its unlikely the parents are paedophiles

so we can then evaluate the data and agree that even though some could view it as paedophilic in this context it is not pedophilic.


the problem we have with the FBI and many people is a cultural one and a lack of knowledge.
most people don't realise that its reasonably easy to acidentaly come across child porn , if your a heavy internet user or into internet culture. The whole situation is made worse by the taboo's surrounding Pornography internet culture and child porn.

the second problem is that the only evidence you are left with in some casses is the data on the hard drive , which in any case for a guilty paedophile or a non guilty internet person would always be 1s, and 0s


the solution is for the FBI to have a reasonable process that would discern a real paedophile over sumone who happened to stumble on child porn. for example the amount of content the user has omn there pc , the consistency of images , users organising the images , the acessablity of the images to the user , the contacts the user has if they are pedophiles. in short there are manny ways that the FBI could use to more acuretly asess a users intent.
