Best Albums of 2010 (Metal Talk Post)

bamdrew says...

hey, DillingerEscapePlan! I've seen them a halfdozen times. Jeez, probably ten years ago,... I'm getting soo old soo fast...

Anyhow, my musical taste kept going into weirder directions this year;

Sufjan Steven's made a tremendously interesting and personal album (Age of Adz) that took this consistently well done electronic turn, like it was produced by Reznor or something ('I Walked' is a highlight for me, with a weeeirdly cool, staggered melody that I'd never really heard done successfully before...). His vocals grow on you after a while... really the whole album gets a lot better with repeat listens (good night-driving album).

Yeasayer shared a (free) live album... I saw them twice in 2010, so might be biased, but they are just the right amount of experimental with a dash of pop so that people get down at their shows. 'Madder Red', 'Tight Rope', '2080', a lot of good stuff. Bit of an 80's throwback with the synth drums and such, but I like it as a child of the 80's.

Beach House (Teen Dream)... oooh beach house... listened to their album for all of Jan and Feb of 2010... great driving cd... love minimalism with build-ups, which is basically every song by them, and her distinct smoker's voice is just rad. Very different band doing its own thing. If you're into As I Lay Dying and all that business right now this cd might be a stretch... however I used to be way into The Locust, so, you never know! (ok, I still listen to The Locust from time to time...)

Local Natives cd was good. The ladies dug this shit a lot because of the vocal harmonies and whatnot; as a drummer, I thought it was pretty rocking at times, and had some nice minorkey guitar themes and buildups. Also caught them live, and they were excellent. 'Wide Eyes' is a good one.

Lastly, she didn't put out a cd, but I listened to a lot of Neko Case in 2010. 'Star Witness', 'The Pharaohs', 'Blacklisted','Deep Red Bells', 'Things that Scare Me',... all these darker, noir tracks really work for me, and I don't think anybody else is doing anything like this successfully. Plus Neko has the greatest voice possible.

Thanks for sharing your top 10; I'll check 'em out!

The Pixies "Where Is My Mind?" - 8 bit edition

jmd says...

>> ^pavel_one:

8-bit?
Don't think so.

The samples used are digitized and not FM synth which is usually what is implied when people say 8 bit chip tunes, but the samples are indeed 8bit. They also usually range from 8-22khz and are uncompressed. I think the only mod formats that support 16bit samples were XM and I think mtm (When I last looked up the scene, I saw that one of the formats was upgraded to support full 16 bit stereo samples).

Pixies - Where Is My Mind (Bassnectar Dubstep Remix)

volumptuous says...

It's because it's Bassnectar. The guy is the most stereotypical boring example of pretty much every genre he tries.

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:

Banal electronic or hip hop re-imaginings of great tunes is a personal pet peeve. By all means, indulge in unimaginative synth noodling all you like, but leave the Pixies out of it.

I can imagine an awesome dubstep version of this song, but it doesn't sound like this. This fucking sucks.

Subjective as it is, I'm disinclined to agree with you.

TRON: Legacy - Daft Punk Derezzed

mgittle says...

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:

Height of music? I dunno... Bach? Stravinsky? Coltrane? The Beatles? Morricone? Certainly not Daft Punk. They are overrated to begin with -more notable for the videos they inspire than the music itself- but now that they have a job scoring a blockbuster movie, they seem to have abandoned whatever originality they once had in favor of creating extremely generic sounding Hollywood film music. No personality. It could have been written by anyone. Boring.
They should have gone with someone unambiguously badass, like Richard D. James of Aphex Twin, or Squarepusher. Hell, you could just license stuff from their back catalogs and it would be infinitely better than this dreck, and probably less expensive.
>> ^Mashiki:
Let me guess, you think dubstep is the height of music.

Exactly what I was thinking. Daft Punk has certainly had some catchy tracks over the years, but wow is this one boring. I haven't heard any of the rest of this supposed soundtrack, but if this is any indication...meh.

I've always wondered how a soundtrack from Ronald Jenkees would sound...especially if he could move a little away from the synth sounds he seems to favor. Most of his music would really overpower any scene, and soundtracks take a little more thought on how to finesse the music into people's ears along with what's on screen.

People are awesome!

volumptuous says...

Jesus christ I hate this fucking music and this is why I also hated the creation of the "Electrionica" channel. This is POP MUSIC. It is not "electronica". Just because something has synthesizers in it doesn't mean it's "electronica". It just means they used synths to make shitty pop music.

I would definitely remove this from that channel, but then all of you would start pooping your internet pants. So, whatever.

Kudos for admitting a mistake.

(Unsolicited advice)

Why are you always so concerned with what other people think? Maybe there is no veneer. Maybe people are just opinionated and confrontational on the internet. I find people to be more true to their nature while under the influence of internet anonymity, rather than less. Netizens are also, by and large, fairly liberal. Sorry for that, but those are the breaks.

You have some great points about food culture, but you bury them so deep with anger, insults and vanity, that no one takes them seriously. Not telling you to change your nature, only that you might be more influential if your ideas were not overshadowed by all your talk of sheep and monkeys. Too much stick, not enough carrot and not enough meat on the bone.

'Appreciate this post from the wayback-I was in banlandia when you posted this, and remember it well. I was between sock-puppet accounts perhaps.

Thanks man...the tags for the bluebeam viddy were pretty fucking lame, huh??(sifting shitfaced...i am a wholly nonviolent drunk, btw, i giggle and cut up mostly) I can't help it, I get a rise out of reactions to stimuli....guilty guilty guilty....but not of racism. Of people's collective denial and their, "my shit stinks less than yours" kinnna attitude while hiding behind a veneer of social pantomime and incivility parading around unchecked and misrepresented as progressive thinking. I can't tell you how many times I have had discussions in real-time, which lead to mutual understanding given others misconception of me with regard to the spoken or written word.

Sound works fine for me. The program cycles through the 2 second grid, so you might not hear sound immediately.
