Star Wars Episode I: Duel of The Fates Fight

videosiftbannedme says...

I am so torn by this clip/movie for these very two reasons:

First, I love, even though the moment is ever so brief, that Darth Maul uses the Force to aid in his opening the door and preventing himself from being backed into a corner. When I saw that in the theatre originally, I actually sat up in my seat and thought "Now THAT was fucking cool."

Secondly and most importantly, I think Lucas made dogshit of what could have been one of the biggest movie reveals of ALL time. Had he kept a lid on the fact that Darth Maul employed a double-bladed lightsaber, I guarantee you EVERYONE would have lost their fucking minds on opening night and the subsequent weeks that followed. Next time you watch the movie, take yourself back to when you first saw it and imagine that you had no idea that DM used the double saber. Then watch this fight again. Instead, they decided to market the hell out of it, ruining what could have been an incredible movie moment, in an otherwise stinker of a movie. Like when the Jedi first arrive in the beginning and Qui-Gon immediately starts taking the door out? Everyone I've ever talked to admitted that was bad ass.

(I always use the T2 reveal of Arnold being a benevolent terminator as an example. As I remember it, Cameron didn't allow any commercials or print ads revealing that secret for the first 2 weeks of release. That's why it was such a great setup and scene and reveal.)

Wait for it... Wait for it... WHOA!

Thanks for asking, NR. I wasn't sure how apparent the situation would be without an appropriate description, so you helped my social experiment.

The police were in high speed pursuit of a suspect. Upon refusal to stop the coppers set up a roadblock, and this is geographically where the video begins. The suspect surely saw the car in the road and could have stopped, but decided to slam head-on (apply directly to your forehead) instead. The French fuzz took that opportunity to apprehend that stinker.

It's pretty easy to avoid bad movies these days, once you square up your own personal taste with rottentomatoes or MetaCritic. I skipped The Fountain, but thought A History Of Violence was decent. It did come from a graphic novel, where extreme violence is commonplace. I also liked The Rock.

I'm happy to say that I've missed all of the other bad movies discussed.

For me, this was the last, best hope for the Farrelly brothers. After Something About Mary, I couldn't wait to see anything they'd put out. A few horrible stinkers later this one again with old Ben Stiller really got me thinking they'd bring the magic again. And then I watched it...

It is terribly unfunny. It drags on with gag after gag that failed to even put a smirk on my face. The first 10 minutes or so kept the full audience I was in utterly silent, save for the old guy a couple seats over, wrestling with his bag of popcorn. No laughs. No giggles. Maybe a few people shedding tears.

It gets just slightly better later, but goes from the unfunny, to the ridiculous, to the stupid. Save your 10 bucks (or your 10 hours, if you go the torrent route .

Also, make sure you miss We Own the Night, but Elizabeth: The Golden Age was good except for its anti-climactic ending.

[edit]
I think I'll turn this into a Cinema Talk post.

In reply to this comment by thesnipe:
It was that bad? Maybe I won't pay to see it then.

In reply to this comment by lucky760:
I won't downvote but the actual movie was just too horrific for me to upvote. I think I'm scarred for life.

Journey to the Stars (Sift Talk Post)

I honestly find it harder to get published now than ever before.

But I guess that's because I don't spend much time doing any real sifting lately and whenever I do submit videos, I guess they're usually stinkers. (No one seems to vote for my star level nor because they like me.) I don't think I'll be seeing a diamond by my name any time in the next year even. I personally don't pay any attention to who submitted what; my votes always go to vids that really strike me.

Anyway, it's great to have you aboard. You too jonny. Glad to have such fine folks "addicted" to this here community.

Say what you will about the "Special Editions"...they are mercifully free of that horrible, horrible song. John Williams has written a lot of great music, and I suppose he has the right to the occasional stinker. But that doesn't mean I have to listen to it.

Rod Liddles The Trouble With Atheism (C4 documentary, 47min)

gluonium says...

DOWN vote. This is one of the most breathtakingly daft and intellectually flimsy documentaries I've seen on the subject. The host trots out the groan inducing old horses of Stalin and Hitler "being atheists" in hopes to prove that somehow atheism is responsible for the atrocities inflicted by each. It is painfully obvious only 5-10 minutes in that he also has essentially no understanding of science or the scientific method at all and compares Darwin's Origin to 'other sacred unquestioned texts like the bible' as if they were somehow of equivalent authority and logical reasoning. The entire program is rife with laughably pathetic attempts to equate current scientific understanding with just any old religion; raising red herrings, false dichotomies and using terms like "cathedrals of science" left and right in desperate hope of convincing the viewer that science and lack of religion are yet just more religions themselves. Don't bother wasting 50 minutes on this stinker, even the Dawkins interview isn't worth the time, as it has obviously been cut to shreds by disingenuous editing in order to blunt his argument's effectiveness. awful. The above comment is right about the recent glut of atheist documentaries but only because there are so many BAD ones out there like this one.
