Right Wing Media Needs a Science Class

Xaielao says...

I've heard that argument before, that we need an orderly plan of action step by step instead of just spending money wildly and creating more problems than solutions. But I've yet to see anyone site a specific example of this happening. In fact much of the industrialized world has spent billions already implementing solutions that we here in the US continue to stall on.

As to the idea that potential solutions shouldn't create profit. The is a wonderful idea but is a pipe dream, at least here in the US. Profit drives everything here. After all, those with the biggest hand in the problem are already making more money than almost anyone else in history and spending a lot of it to stop climate research and potential solutions in their tracks.

Sylvester_Ink said:

Agreed. I'm Christian, and politically conservative, but I'm certainly not jumping on the denial train. I think what most scientifically-aware conservatives (yes, we exist) are more concerned about is that the facts are uncovered and that a plan of action is established, in a logical, orderly manner. Unfortunately, people tend to jump to conclusions about the causes, and then rush solutions that tend to cause more problems than they solve. And that's really a factor of making money off the issue, whether it be from the media using fear, or the various business industries proposing solutions that are more monetarily beneficial to themselves than solving the problem.

Multiple Anal Probes, Forced Defecation For Clenched Buttock

The whole story and the victims lawsuit is found on the local news webpage here

http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S3209305.shtml?cat=500#.UnrmP_msh8H

I took the time to read the entire lawsuit and the step by step detailing of what this guy went through is chilling.

A comment on the the above webpage from a person claiming to be an RN

"I'm an RN. The physicians should not have their licenses suspended. They should be taken away. Committing medical procedures against the will of a patient, regardless of whatever judicial or political pressure is brought to bear on the physician, is a crime. It is unethical, and despicable. What this man went through was nothing less than sexual assault. The physicians should also be ARRESTED and jailed for committing this assault, put in a sex offenders registry, and made to provide financial restitution to him."

Sorry for the delayed response. I got a bit busy this week, and didn't have the time/energy to dedicate that a response of this sort deserves. Thanks for your patience.

Your response suggests an adoption to Marxism which, in my opinion, is unmatched in the level of suffering it has caused, but leaving that aside...
In response to your bullet points:

#1. "ever wonder why there is an economics course and a business admin course? there is a reason for that.one is theory the other practical application. and economists get it wrong...and often."

This is the kind of thing Paul Krugman often says, and it's flat wrong. To the extent we have a free market, we have a successful exchange of goods and services at a fair and competitive price. To the extent to which we have socialism, with central planners, and governmental regulation, we have cronyism, plutocratic kleptocracy, and failure. The Austrian school of economics does a very good job of explaining -- step by step in a manner in which you can follow along using deductive logic, how such contradictions come about. Entrepreneurs are to Austrian economists as artists are to the best of art/literary critics. There's no discrepancy between theory and practice. They can clearly and accurately describe what entrepreneurs are doing. Unless you have studied Mises, you'll probably have little to no good idea as to what economics is or what it can or cannot do.

#2: fascism is, in fact, a type of socialism because it follows a socialist economic model.

#3: Yes, I've thought it through. Explain to me specifically how you arrived at your conclusions. Otherwise, you're just making assertions.

> "france is a democracy. they have capitalism AND
> socialism."

France has a mix of capitalism and socialism, not unlike the U.S. Again, to the degree that France has a free market, things work and to the degree that they have socialism, the problems arise and get worse, as they/we are seeing now. To the degree that they are socialist, they are a failure. Socialism is unsustainable because you have no economic calculation. (And the European Union, which includes France, is failing -- in case you haven't noticed. This video can provide you with the data you need to understand this.)

Socialism is planned chaos because the issue of economic calculation (and its absence) gets glossed over. The EU is partially socialist -- it's a mix -- so it can somewhat slow down the effects of socialist chaos, unlike full-blown socialist systems. But it is increasingly more socialist and the chaos increases.
To deal with this planned chaos, these mixed systems rely on Lord Keynes' theories and policies of credit expansion, which equates to basically "throwing money" at the problem.
But, (as the Keynes/Hayek rap video says) "there's a boom and bust cycle and good reason to fear it!"

(Quite honestly, I'm surprised that you're not for establishing stable rules for the banks. You know, so that they're no longer able to extend money/credit that they don't have without being charged with fraud.
Because if you were for such banking rules, then you would no longer support the Keynesian approaches upon which your ideology is resting. Personally, I think money and credit needs rules and, for this reason, I don't support socialism or central planning in the absence of economic calculation, which is only possible within a free market system.)

The credit expansion expands the circumference of the boom and bust cycle, slowing it down, extending the boom period, but setting things up for a worse bust. It's all very predictable. If some are still not convinced about Europe's failure, it is because even as bad as things are, the bust has not really hit. Yet, it will. Eventually.

Unlike the Dollar, the Euro is not the world's reserve currency, and there is no petro-euro like there is a petro-dollar. So Europe cannot delay the bust in the manner that the U.S. can. On the other hand, thanks to German objections, the credit expansion in Europe has not gone as high as in the U.S. so their bust may not be as disastrous as it can be for the U.S.

The boom and bust cycle cannot occur in an anarchy because you need a central bank with powers of credit expansion to make it happen.
The alternative explanation, the "animal spirits" (a la Lord Keynes) posits that all businesses suddenly make mistakes at the same time, and/or all consumers at the same time decide to stop buying, causing the bust. I doubt it. That's no explanation at all.

> "my point is that health care should be a collective project
> but i believe i also entertained a free market solution as well."

I think you need to define what you mean by "collective" because the free market is as collective as it gets. I don't think you grasp what the free market means (i.e., voluntary interactions that allow for economic calculation and involve zero violence, allowing for better service and cheaper prices). Unless you understand this, no further discussion will lead to very much.

You say some things should be done collectively. I say many things must be done collectively. That's the basic premise of Austrian economics, the division of labor. You cannot do everything yourself. That's one reason I say that the free market economy is as collective as it gets.

> "i am a dissident. an anarchist."

If you're an anarchist, then you don't believe in government, by definition. So you can't be a socialist, as socialism requires a government to manage things. Without government, the only thing left is voluntary exchanges, which is the definition of a free market, economic capitalism (not to be confused with sociological capitalism).

You shouldn't rely on economists to tell you how things are. See for yourself. Again, only the Austrian school (that I know of) enables you to follow deductively on your own and make rational sense of the market activity.

You say economists are "probably wrong." How do you know? Economics isn't mysterious heuristics and sociological prophesy. It's like mathematics. You don't need to "believe" me that 2 + 2 = 4. You can deduce it for yourself.

I think that if you can learn a few basic economic lessons (which you can easily verify for yourself), you'll understand better where I'm coming from. (Then you'll be a coherent anarchist and not sound so confused ).

If you are an "anarchist," then who do you want administering things if not the government?

Hayek was much more of an anarchist (again, the rap video:
"The question is who plans for whom? Do I plan for myself, or leave it to you? I want plans by the many, not by the few.")

An anarchist who thinks otherwise is not much of an anarchist, is he?

Louis C.K. Interview By James Poniewozik

CreamK says...

The last question and the answer to it was really great. If you want to succeed in show business, you have to have that "show must go on" attitude where you just don't rest until the shit is done, a genuine interest about the subject and the message. Even if it's a commercial for a local car dealer, that motivation will shine thru. If you don't have that, you're in the wrong line of work. I've never met anyone who has that passion and care to not get a job in the industry and i've seen a lot of arrogant and talented people fail miserably.

That being said, you have to use some elbows every once in a while, step on some toes and be confident of what you do. I'm advancing step by step just because of that genuine care about the message, have only got good reviews (so far, fingers crossed...) Every time i get a new show to do, i'm just so grateful to have that chance, seeing the look on peoples faces when something you did makes them dry or laugh.. That 5 seconds of shared emotion cures all pains.

Why cant non probationary, non gem, members *dead/dupe/rel (Wtf Talk Post)

Zawash says...

Good post, L0cky - I definitely agree that the FAQ is hidden away - if I want to get information regarding how to post videos, how to troubleshoot problems etc, I just have to google with site:videosift.com and hope I find anything useful - like this page regarding various hosts, but I still don't know how to get to that page from elsewhere on the sift. A link to that page from the FAQ might be a bit helpful...

As well, the submit page itself should have a lot of helpful links - the Video Embed Code field should have a link to the aforementioned page explaining how to embed from various sources, the Tags and Title fields should have helpful texts as to how to write good titles and tags, the NSFW checkbox should link to guidelines as to what exactly is considered NSFW.

If one wants to attract new sifters, then it's not enough to explain guidelines for what you shouldn't post, if it's not explained how to post!

The FAQ should be displayed prominently at the top of the page, easy to find for new (and potential) members, and should include friendly step by step instructions on how to post videos from various popular sites - how to set keywords and channels. The only friendly stuff about that in the FAQ is in the posting guidelines, with the text "Search the site before submitting to see if your video is already posted." - but no hints as to how to do that properly.

Or did I miss the first rule about Videosift - that one does not talk about the sift.

Major Scaled #2 : REM - "Recovering My Religion"

elrondhubbard says...

Look at the keyboard, starting at middle C, which is a white key. All the keys in C major are white keys, so going right from middle C, the keys are named: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, then C again an octave higher.

The simplest way to hear the difference is to play a C major chord, which is the first, third and fifth notes of the scale: C, E, G. Just hit all three at the same time and you can hear they have a certain sound together - call it majorness.

In a minor chord, on the other hand, the middle note of the chord (the third, E in the case of a C chord) is flattened -- so, instead of hitting the white E key, you hit the black E-flat key to its left, while keeping the same C and G. You can hear those notes also have a certain sound to them - call it minorness. Go back and forth between the major and minor chords and you'll start to hear the difference.

Here's the thing: scales are based on the *intervals* between the notes in them. C to D is a full step, or just a step. D to E is also a full step. D to E-flat, on the other hand, is a half-step. So the major scale goes like this:

Step, step, half-step. Step. Step, step, half-step.

Notice how the first part and the second part of the scale are identical, with an additional step separating them? Now try flattening the third note of both parts to make a minor scale:

Step, half-step, step. Step. Step, half-step, step.

That's the minor natural scale. Starting at C, it goes: C, D, E-flat, F, G, A, B-flat, C. If you start from a different note, you transpose into a different key and end up with different notes being sharp or flat, but the major- or minorness of it still comes from the interval pattern.

Anyway, what they basically did was take the flattened third (E-flat) and seventh (B-flat) and raised them a half-step while leaving everything else the same. Boom, it sounds like a more upbeat song. Cheers!

RFlagg said:

Interesting. But now explain to me like I'm 5, what minor and major chords/scales are? The Wikipedia articles seem to assume a bit of musical theory knowledge, even trying to figure out what a chord is (seems to be just a stack of notes, but then they talk scales where there is no stack of notes at the same time). I know where middle C is on a piano, and on a sheet music and could follow a note to where it is by counting up or down (so no playing songs). I've always thought of the two clefs as left (for the bass clef) and right (for the treble clef) hand... so poor music knowledge here...

EDIT: I should note I can hear how it sounds more upbeat or whatever, but I hear the terms major/minor and chords all the time (I think I understand scale is going up the notes from whatever key you are starting at to the last key before repeating and then back down)... and just wondering on what the terms refer to...

Hi, I see you commented, but I don't seem to be able to leave a independent comment, so don't hope you don't mind me replying to yours. To be released on the 12-12-12 - A Madness Shared by Two, is not only the true untold story about the lives of Sabina and Ursula Eriksson, alongside the murder of Glenn Hollinshead, based on a critique re-examination of the BBC’s Madness in the Fast Lane documentary that had 7 million viewers [with a conservative estimate of around a further 15 million people having since watched this film via the internet and on websites such as YouTube],glued to their TV screens watching the twin sisters propelling themselves into the fast lane of the oncoming traffic on the UK’s-M6 motorway, as Ursula manages to throw herself under the wheels of a 40ft articulated lorry travelling at 60mph, that seems to swallow her up and spit her lifeless looking body back out of its rear end. It is also the result of a thorough investigation into what might have really happened on those fateful days that led up to this tragic slaying of an innocent man. We challenge the “Official Storyline” and expose what really occurred just hours before M6 dash, for it is here for the first time we expose the Eriksson sisters were “arrested” under the Mental Health Act, though this vital caught on film evidence was edited out of the original BBC films. This will come as a great surprise to many people who questioned; ‘...how was it possible Sabina could have been released from hospital after only five hours’ following their ‘suicide attempt’ on the M6? We also reveal that the coroner’s report shows that the injuries inflicted on Glenn, indicate more than one person probably killed him and that Sabina could be totally innocent. Yet this obvious evidence seems to have been brushed under the carpet, or at the very least, it was never challenged. We explain how these twins were very likely embroiled in a major drugs smuggling ring and that they had been under “Obbo” [police observation] prior to the M6 incident, and was probably so for quite some period of time. As a result of our findings, legal action is now being sought and brought against the police and other related authoritative bodies by the Hollinshead family.

Icon Big Tex Fries at the State Fair

Stormsinger says...

Point 1: If by misquote, you mean substituted a larger term (religion) for a smaller one (churches), I suppose I did. But without religion, there -are- no churches. I don't see any meaningful difference.

Point 2: Texas has worked damned hard to earn its reputation as a major-league collection of wingnuts. I'm not sure how you can justify getting upset when that reputation is assumed to be true. You have a problem with the reputation, maybe you should start blaming the people who are going out of their way to earn it...like Rick Perry, or the Texas Board of Education. As long as the state is trying to rewrite history to eliminate reality's liberal bias, you're going to be stuck with that.

Point 3: Perhaps I should have slowed down and spent more time in the step-by-step logic...I really thought most people who read her could follow the shorthand, but I did indeed jump about a bit.

In many ways, churches are no different than any corporation. They exist as a means to concentrate funds and offer the controller(s) of those funds a method of avoiding personal responsibility for misuse of those funds. On top of that, churches pay no taxes, although they still make liberal use of publicly funded services, -and- in many cases, they keep lobbying for public funds to be handed over to them as well. Now add how many churches are politically active and advising their cult members how to vote, and you might begin to see why I refer to them all as corporate welfare queens. Or maybe not...I don't know if you're even going to try to follow it or not, and don't much care at this point.

Someone just explained separation of church and state to him.

Jeeez dude, you are about a party-liner ain't ya?? Texas would be the first state to "separate" from the diseased political system you so faithfully believe in and, as we observe, believe in as fervently as any bible-thumping proselytizer determined to beat a moot point into oblivion.
As the government of the U.S. continues down her retrograde path, churches will become for many, a last bastion of sanity exempt from a really retarded form of totalitarianism and fascism. Retarded, because folks who talk shit from the comfort of their programming who belie intelligence with their words should have seen the shit coming from miles away but were too comfortable in their delusion to see the boots and badges-

I was gonna...but then decided it's not worth it, then changed my mind one last time.
I suspect aAnyone who can call religion "the last bastion of sanity" is too far gone to make sense, but... Religion supplies a cushy lifestyle for priests...that's the sum total of it's accomplishments. Churches have, if anything, helped push the government down the path you so self-righteously condemn...and they preach and stump political issues all without paying any taxes. Yet more corporate welfare.
It's time for the -real- welfare queens to start paying their share...churches, Wall Street, Defense contractors, big Pharma, etc. Time to either start contributing to the upkeep of society, or be broken up (or strung up, as the case may be).

No, you misquote me and then infer bullshit in that same smug manner that libby there used and that anyone on the receiving end of such smug could expect after reading a gajillion similar quips. I said CHURCHES and meant the members of the same whose communal efforts keep the building's physical plant in order and supports the members in time of want or need. You know...The first places to get raided and ransacked when the jackboots come??
This didn't start about about religion: I started it when Potato-libro there took a jab at Texas and lighted upon another opportunity to bash "them ignernt conservatives, etc.", NOT UNLIKE a shitload of folks with "holier than thou" attitudes concerning politics and government. QUITE laughable really, because the opinions they have and the conclusions they have arrived at, are based on limited and incomplete information or worse, they have been programmed to do so through systematic efforts by do-nothings in colleges or universities.
Stormsinger, YOUR rant began with religion and politics and manically concluded with corporations and Wall Street....WTF??!! By the way, my solution as an anarchistic, soon-to-be expatriate is to use the BIG TEX method on governments and corporations. You hate em so much, be like the Hulk. SMAAAASH! Then burn, repeat.
Can we talk about how fucking progressive IDAHO is now??? Jesus Christ, Allah Mustapha!!
I suspect anyone who can start with anti-religion rants, switch to blaming churches for the state of America's demise, bash tax-exemption and somehow blame corporate welfare (whatever the fuck!??...see where this is going?) and arrive at a total solution by blaming BELTWAY INSIDERS AND THE SENATORS/CONGRESSMEN THEY HAVE BOUGHT for pharma, defense, etc. shifting the blame to people without any power or influence???....I'd have to call them schizophrenic! Which is how most rabid concerning politics ion one side or the other are to me. ALLL OF THEM, conservative or liberal. I could give a fiddler's fist-fuck about working within a failed system. I prefer to keep to the fringes of this broken machine and put as little of my resources or mentations into it.
But some, like stormie and libby here...well, hopeless fiends and junkies for the dance politic. Playing right into the hands of the corporations iffn ya axe me!

Best political ad ever-but then the opponent is weak

2. mostly unrealistic. america is #1 energy hog and neither technology advancements nor more drilling here will solve that or feed that gluttonous thirst. we are dependent on foreign energy, which is partly why we have 450 military bases around the world. We need to reduce need, and to do that, we need to re-examine our role in the world as pure consumers.

Well said. There are number of things that would reduce the power consumption right away. Refine the stupid pollution control that favors higher consumption in vehicles (lower consumption = more pollution per gallon when it should be mileage vs pollution.. now you can make a car that goes 10MPG but "pollutes" less), invest in public transport, invest in renewal sources.. You got huge amounts of land empty that could be used for solar farming, long coastlines to harvest wave energy, enough thermal activity to take energy from there (allthou thinking that USA is drilling to the core frightens me, you people have never been could at moderation...).

It seems to be that the thinking goes: This (particular) renewable source is not enough so we don't do it at all. But step by step, it would start to play a major part in the big picture. And there's endless supplies of solar energy, 250 W/m2 in average taking cloud cover and sun angle in to account.
