Do you have to be an asshole to make great stuff? (Blog Entry by dag)

kymbos says...

I'm a bit surprised at the general level of debate about Jobs. I don't really care about whether he was nice to people or not. I don't measure him on that basis, and I couldn't hope to know the truth of it.

To me, that whole discussion smacks of tabloid driven fantasy. You know, the whole pretence that we might actually know what celebrities are like. Oh, Angelina Jolie's a bitch, Steve Jobs was an arsehole, Tom Cruise is craaaaaaazy!

For me, the debate seems to have been about canonising a 'genius' or demonising a capitalist pig. Neither of these comes close to capturing how I think he should be remembered.

I confess, I'm not an Apple fan. I'm not an early adapter, I'm not into gadgets and I tend to wait until something is proven before I buy in. I'm not blown away by Apple products, but I did buy an Ipod when the dust settled and they seemed like a useful product. I still have it, and it's been worth the purchase. I don't see anything worthy of a genius tag on an Apple product, but they are beautifully designed, intuitive products.

Similarly, I don't think of him as an evil capitalist any more than any other business owner, and no less. Like any other manufactured product, Apple uses cheap Asian labour, but that doesn't offend me greatly. They appear to control the supply chain, and they have differentiated their products, managed supply, and achieved margins that are higher than their competitors - this is good business, and I respect it.

I don't believe he's 'changed' anyone's life dramatically - certainly not my own. I think he was a very smart guy who delivered very good products to a generation of people with high disposable incomes and an interest in technology. Well played.

I will never know what he was like as a person, and I'm ok with that.

It was nice of DFT to sit in the empty theater you rented, watching your student-caliber film projected off a laptop, but that doesn't entitle him to be such a sanctimonious asshole.

I'm glad you decided to make it personal. Thanks for the personal attacks.
The truth is of course that you wanted to score that "student-caliber film". But I listened to your scoring samples. They were okay, but not great. So I passed. This must've set you right the hell off, because ever since you've been a bit of a prick to me. No hard feelings, DFT. Be a smart guy right now and drop it. I'm sure you don't want to make this any more personal than you already have. I can do far worse.

You talk about personal attacks--then threaten dft?
You certainly have learned self awareness.
"Don't make this personal--or I'll personally come after you."
Here's a little advice--I know you won't take advice from a lowly person such as myself, but I'll try anyway--back away from the computer.
Give it a couple of days--come back and apologize to @DerHasisttot. Leave dft and everyone else alone. I guarantee if you follow this advice you will benefit.
We disagree on many things, but I enjoy your videos and many things you say make me think about my own preconceptions. I like that you are here.
You like it here; don't trash it.

This is the bias I'm talking about. Did you read his quoted comment with rose colored glasses? And where's the threat? I want him to stop making personal attacks against me over my film. He's an artist and should know better. Just because you side with him ideologically doesn't mean he's right.

I could say some really mean things, but I've held back. Because although our friendship is irreparable, I still think he's a genuine guy personally. A good man generally. Sweet in person. But we're both letting our ideological differences make us enemies online. And that's maybe how it should be.

Wasp sucking machine

BoneRemake says...

What a smart guy, having been stung six times in a matter of seconds previously, he has chosen to wear shorts and a thin shirt.

Evolution not in action.

*edit- I think this is actually pointless, why does he suck them into a chamber and continue to smoosh and kill them ? I am not some peta loving hippy but if he is going to do that, he should be smart enough to just light a fire in it or use a tiger torch to kill them all in one fall swoop.

What the hell is the point of catching them in this container and shaking them around like rice ?

** how is hippy not in the flippin dictionary ?

If you people would get off your reactionary, self-righteous high horses for a second you would realize he is one of the good guys, relatively speaking... Don't hate the Player. Hate the game.

He's just a fairly smart guy who got a very well paid job as one of the camp guards.

"You can be a guard too", he says! "No need to be slave labour, if you're fairly smart you can sell out your brothers and sisters and ride around in a quarter million dollar car and own 10 houses the slaves will have to rent and pay off for you!
Come on guys, what's wrong with you?! I'm trying to help you!"

Soemthing sensible needs to be done quick before the human race defaults to the same solution it has used EVERY TIME this has happened before, i.e. the fall of EVERY EMPIRE till now, and these 'good guys' end up on the guillotine.

Chomsky dispels 9/11 Conspiracies with Logic

scumbag academic: "Best theory that Al Quada did 9/11" (doesn't present a shred of evidence)

Meh - he clearly presented the strongest argument against the "conspiracy theory": that it doesn't make any sense. As he explains, it requires tremendous risk, is far from foolproof, requires magical execution, and there's much, much simpler ways to get to the same place. These are the same simple objections that should come up in anyone's mind when presented with this theory.
Why don't you tell us what you think happened and who did what? Don't be a coward and say "well, I don't know what happened, but I know what didn't because of these X things that I don't accept the explanation of". How about you just tell us what happened and why you think that it makes any sense whatsoever? Or, and this is a much bigger task, provide an explanation that makes more sense and fits better with evidence than the official explanation?
Chomsky would love to be able to get behind this kind of conspiracy (or even leave open the possibility) - heaven knows he loves the underdog, and obviously he had no love for Bush - but he's a rational, smart guy.
Now, if you were calling him a scumbag for defending some dictator in the 70s, then whatever - but calling him a scumbag because even he's not willing to get on this crazy bus? You don't know him, or you're nuts. When Chomsky won't even entertain an idea like this, it says something about the idea, not about Chomsky.

What I liked in particular about his reply was the observation that in many scientific experiments you will observe events that perhaps don't make sense or cannot be easily explained. That perhaps is simply a limitation of our current knowledge and in the real world doesn't necessarily imply a vast, rather complex conspiracy that is far more plausible in a comic book.

Maybe it's more about what was allowed to happen, and less about who did what. Ever think of that?
