Wow, it feels different around here. Yes, I got you the charter membership so you could pretty the place up and you succeeded in doing so!!!! It looks awesome...I really love the colors you chose...AND I'm so glad you finally have an avatar picture...it was time to stop procrastinating and post one already. It suits you.

Glad your headache is gone. I only get them when I spend long periods of time staring at a computer screen or when I'm dehydrated. It wouldn't surprise me if staring at a computer screen is what gave you that headache since it seemed like you were on here all day.

I don't mind so much when the power goes out (as long as it doesn't last too long)...it's fun to have to use candles and find something to do that doesn't require electricity for a change. At least you have an iphone and a connection to the internet. You're not totally cut off!

Ok, I have to ask....I'm assuming FSM is internet slang for something, but I have no idea what...and I even googled it to try to figure it out....I got "flying spaghetti monster", "female seeking male", among other things. What does it mean?

Procrastinatron said:

Yeah, the headache passed all right. Thank Jebus for that, because it was one of the worst I've ever had!

Another bit of bad luck, however, is that I currently don't have any electricity, so I'm stuck with my iPhone and feeling both dejected and hamstrung.

But this, too, shall pass.

And about the Cannabis vid, I honestly sort of expected it.

I mean, most people don't exactly come to VS for entire documentaries.

Oh, and... I just received charter membership. Was that you?

If so...

OH MY FREAKING FSM THAT'S AWESOME THANK YOU!!!

I don't know wo' makes you an expa', but you're fla' out wrong, innit?

Via here:

1. (British slang, esp. Asian, i.e. Indian, Pakistani, etc.)

Contraction of "isn't it", "isn't he/she", "aren't they", "isn't there" and many other end-of-sentence questions. For greatest effect use in places where it would make no sense whatsoever if expanded.

Derives from the chav/townie/pikey sub-culture, but falsely over-labbeled on the British Asian Communities. Innit is a shortened version of is it not, in context, it would be "is it not?" which we can see is a question due to the required question mark and change in the pitch of the voice to indicate a question is being asked. Chavs, however, due to their lack of education (zero GCSEs) and ignorance towards learning English at school because "i already speaks it, innit", tend to, more often than not, use the term innit when a statement has been used, rather than a question.
Please educate as to how my use is improper.

Obama "I Won't be Scrambling Jets to Get 29-Year-Old Hacker"

shatterdrose says...

Um, so where did he say "because a drone strike . . . " ? I didn't see or hear him say it. So without that, there's nothing special here.

"hack·er [hak-er] Show IPA
noun
1.
a person or thing that hacks.
2.
Slang. a person who engages in an activity without talent or skill: weekend hackers on the golf course.
3.
Computer Slang.
a.
a computer enthusiast.
b.
a microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems."

Well, I'd be damned. It seems according to the dictionary he is a hacker. Hmmmm.

Ten Richest People in the World

ChaosEngine says...

In NZ, there is a mentality among small business owners referred to as "Boat, bach and BMW". Essentially it states that once kiwi business people make enough money to have a boat, a bach (kiwi slang) and a BMW, they lose interest in expanding their business any further.

The government, lobby groups, economic "think tanks" and so on are always complaining about this.

My response has always been "why?". If I had enough money to live comfortably and buy the little luxuries I want, why on earth would I keep working myself to the bone?

I know some people work because they love what they do and that's cool, but working just so you can have another million or billion or whatever? What's the point?

After Earth Trailer #2

Just saw this. definitely not a stellar movie...it is a little bland and straightforward. The nepotism for Jaden is clear.

It's not a horrible movie though. Since it is so Jaden-centric, you could definitely argue the movie is really meant for kids and not for the grownups.

I think the internet has decided that it is cool to rag on M. Night Shaymalan so even if he makes a merely ok movie, it's still going to be panned.

This is an okay movie. Not great, but not bad either.

I personally liked the little details. There was an obvious effort to speak in a different accent since after 1000 years on a different planet, we are not going to talk with the same accents we do now. I liked the distinct look of their technology and that everything had an organic, "grown" feel to it. The bits of military slang that had evolved to mean more than their original meaning. It's the little bits of details like that which made this movie enjoyable for me.

Nope. Cola is slang for cocain. At least in English speaking countries. For examples see many movies from the 1980s. I have heard the cannabis reference as well but I don't like to associate those two very different substances. I wouldn't want my favorite food associated with some other food that have negative connotations for me. Therefore I would not use the same word for those two foods.

You really just don't have any self awareness do you?

you complain about my use of slang and rhetoric. Yet in the very next series of sentences, you launch into your own tirade of derisive rhetoric and insults.

Here, let me attempt to clarify the irony with a much more simple example.

"This motherfucker is calling me names!"

If you're going to cry foul about mud-slinging, it helps if you're not slinging your own mud. Just a suggestion though.

Now...do you have any arguments that actually have to do with topic at hand, or are you just going to whine again?

It's really quite annoying when you use the term "right wing loonies" or some other such rhetoric-to-incite whenever you pop spit all over similar posts, no-doubt just as annoying are advocates of sanity and less bullshit. Very sophomoric, and fucking irritating and rude....Simpleton?! How about taking a a bath in the cold waters of of the experiential gravity well?

PalmliX says...

>> ^Sagemind:

I dislike her and don't agree with any of her blunt, rude comments BUT the word retard has a definition and can used as such.
re·tard 1 (r-tärd)
v. re·tard·ed, re·tard·ing, re·tards
v.tr.
To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede.
v.intr.
To be delayed.
n.
1. A slowing down or hindering of progress; a delay.
2. Music A slackening of tempo.
The word does not mean stupid - it means "To move slowly" and may be used in reference to someone who responds slowly. A very intelligent person can retard the process to get a clear perspective on the situation or to stonewall.
I use retardant in my paint so it drys slower.
Even used as a derogatory term, the word at best, means one is slow. I don't agree with her using the term in the way she did and she was clearly lashing out like a child having a temper tantrum but to the meaning of the word itself, I see so issues here.
Piers needs to let this one go and move on.

Hmmm the only problem with this argument is that right underneath the section of the website you quoted there's this:

re·tard 2 (rtärd)
n. Offensive Slang
1. Used as a disparaging term for a mentally retarded person.
2. A person considered to be foolish or socially inept.

Now I'm all for free speech, even offensive free speech when it has something important or meaningful to say but this is the entirety of Anne's tweet: “I highly approve of Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the retard.”

Which to me lacks any real substance and says nothing of consequence or importance. In fact its just plain nasty and shallow.

The meaning behind ‘Gangnam Style’ video (and lyrics) (Asia Talk Post)

dystopianfuturetoday says...

Issy confirms that Oppa is a respectful term for an older brother, though she doesn't know what it means in contemporary South Korean slang. I'm thinking it might be like 'brotha' in English slang, or what RevT says.

The girl he dances with (with the orange streaks in her hair) is Kim Hyun-a, a multi-talented celebrity in Korea. I couldn't find a cast list on google for the rest of the crew. Nothing on IMDB.

And..I think this video might be up for the win channel, atleast from my Internet slang usage it goes in there that's for damned sure... How the hell can it NOT be!? So many of those just cracked me up...
