Does anyone here play Supreme Commander? (Videogames Talk Post)

Throbbin says...

We are going to have to go head to head on GPGnet sometime. I'm going on a business trip for a coupla days, but I'll PM you this weekend so we can have a skirmish (SupCom 1 that is).

>> ^LarsaruS:

Yup, I love TA and still play it from time to time... I own both Sup Com 1 & 2 and have played them a bit but not online yet.

Stalemate in Korangal Valley-Afghanistan

theaceofclubz says...

Wow - I honestly didn't think this would get sifted. I submitted because I was in the Korengal June - July of '06. I was an engineer so I never left the base. When we got dropped of by Chinook there (it is inaccessible by road during the spring months due to flooding from the snow melt) it was basically just one platoon of Marines living in makeshift bunkers made out of logs. No perimeter, no nothing. We spent the months establishing the perimeter (theres a chance that the Constantina wire in one of the shots was installed by me) and setting up a reinforced barracks area. In the month or so we were there there were 6 rocket attacks and two small arms skirmishes on the base. The Chinook that left before our leaving the base took small arms fire and one of the Marines inside got hit in the shoulder. So when we got our Chinook ride out it took evasive maneuvers. It was a pretty fucking crazy ride. One of my sergeants got sick and ralphed in his dirty laundry bags because of the banks the chopper was pulling. Crazy times. Its disheartening to see that 3 years later not much has changed.

Hypocrites... the whole lot of ya! (Wtf Talk Post)

I've been logging on about twice a week now for the past couple of months regularly. There IS either a siftquisiton going on, or some guys are fighting about to need one. It's gotten to the point to where you've washed your hands of it.
Just don't completely back out of it and hand too much over to the masses. The dominant personalities will take us in a negative direction without wiser heads keeping us on vision.

Perhaps someone needs to conduct a review of what's been happening but I'm logging in daily and I'm not seeing a rash of siftquisitions. The most notable bans were the permanment banishments of Bill O and CP420. These were two of the least interesting contributors to the site. And they would often try to stir things up with a post to sift talk which inevitably got replies and further skirmishes. That was entirely on them.
The other (temp) bans were related to inappropriate invocations which some did to point out "inconsistencies". Hence, I think, the introduction of tools to spread the admin load onto the community who presumably will then have no one to whine to but themselves when they don't see the result they desire.

All in all, I don't think the discord was ever that bad, not even recently and I have misgivings about the newly instituted process which could go wrong in a number of ways - but I have been wrong before so here's to hoping it all turns out right.

Winter Soldier Conference : The Breakdown of the Military

MarineGunrock says...

What an epic douche bag. Training was inadequate? WWI style? Hello, it's not like we had ever faced a battlefield like Iraq before that. Prior to OIF, conflict in urban areas was limited to minor skirmishes. We've never fought a full war in an urban environment.

After listening to more, sounds to me like he was just a shitbag that couldn't take it. And yes, "taking them to the treeline" is a good practice because it keeps a Marine's record clean. If a Marine fucks up enough that he needs to be taken to the treeline, then what he endures is meant to keep him on edge, to think twice before acting so that he doesn't make the same mistake again. If you always let the command know about it, when it comes time for him to be eligible for promotion, even if he has turned around and is a stellar Marine, they (the command) might still think of him as a shitbag - and then not promote him. Because when you do good, no one knows. When you fuck up, everyone knows.

And underage drinking in the Marine Corps? Where the fuck is underage drinking NOT common!?
Four years and only got LCpl? Yup. Shitbag. Shut the fuck up and quit whining just because you couldn't hack it.

Powell Eviscerates McCain's Negative Smear Campaign

charliem says...

Holy shit.
I saw his vid on Meet the Press, and dont get me wrong, it was a biggun...but this just raises the discourse to a whole new level.

Hes cut right to the bone.

The issues are what matter, how the country is going to be run over the next 4-8 years, how they are going to be seriously looked at and handled is priority number one, not some petty character assassination in a vein attempt to avoid dealing with the mess that his own party created.

I have a ton of respect for Colin Powell, the minute he resigned his office you just knew its because he thought that the party had lost its way, and he was pressured into going into Iraq.

Ive read his auto-bio, and one thing that stood out to me when he resigned, was a section that read that he would never even consider going into battle, be it a small skirmish, or an entire invasion force, without plans to get the troops out.

You could see it all over his face, he did not want to be a part of Iraq, but was dragged along for the ride by the politicians.

The Muska Incident: Skaters fight with cops

10038 says...

What Vallely meant:

It really comes down to... blindly fighting against 'the man', not knowing anything about the situation. All authority is bad, and we must fight against them.

For all Vallely knew, Musks had just assaulted someone and was being 'detained'...

I'm not saying the security officers were 'right', but it's this "attack first, don't apologize later... we're righteous because they don't understand us" crap that starts most skirmishes, and they never care about the consequences of their actions.

US Navy shoots down Iranian passenger jet

qualm says...

"That is why i can't understand why our military is so unused to fighting that style of war. Our Country was founded on those tactics."

Insurrectionary warfare is fought by guerillas or resistance fighters or "freedom fighters" against an outside invader. Tactics involve ambushes, engaging in regular skirmishes, general harassment and sabotage. Guerillas take advantage of local support and their superior knowledge of terrain to erode the will to fight of the invaders.

Anti-insurrectionary warfare attempts to divide, isolate and destroy pockets of resistance. Cutting off lines of supply is crucial, and attempts are made to befriend the locals while trying to make the guerillas appear as the enemy. To this end invaders generally first employ propaganda against local inhabitants and when that invariably fails they attempt to coerce them with economic sanctions, or the supplying or withholding of necessary medicines. Next invaders destroy their homes and/or kill the locals en masse, ie. women and children, and the elderly.

Keeping that in mind, I suggest that the USofA was primarily established by anti-insurrectionary warfare. (In this case, a 'cleansed word' for genocide.)

"Stand" by Jewel

snoozedoctor says...

You mean to tell me Dave Matthews has written more than one song? I guess I did notice the tracks had differing lengths on his CDs, so they must be different songs. Jewel was really good in "Ride with the Devil", Ang Lee's film about the Missouri/Kansas border skirmishes during the Civil War. It's one of the best films no one has seen. I recommend it highly.

2 Roosters Break Up A Rabbit Fight - Hilarious

choggie says...

the roosters, looked as if they switched on when the playful skirmish started in the ring between the bunnies....the cocks, or male chickens, saw an opportunity to give in to their conditioned/instinctual territorial? impulses, and joined in on the ass-whuppin', though the rabbit part, threw them off (no spurs??), and it reset their pea-brained asses.....if they have asses..oh yeah they do, that part you give to the dog out th' oven...and they lost interest.....

animal husbandry, don't happen in the city.....

the revolution will not be televised (spoof)

joedirt says...

i think the playboy bunny (middle of the video) is nfsw.. but whatever.

there won't be anymore of these riot police skirmishes anymore. they have vans with microwave neuron-activating pain-inducing ray guns now. tested and kinks worked out thanks to lucky iraqi volunteers.
