Monkey Tries to Break Out of Zoo

Chimpanzees raised in captivity are usually taught to communicate using hand signs from ASL. Anyone here know sign language?

No but I have a good guess at what pointing to an object and then pointing to your palm means.

And to the idiots calling me Dr Doolittle. My whole point is that this is pretty obvious and I'm not claiming to be Dr Doolittle but someone who can observe an event and distinguish my own perception from the psychological priming (the description).

A Fascinatingly Disturbing Thought - Neil DeGrasse Tyson

vaire2ube says...

Tyson is talking about arbitrary scales to make a correlation ... he is admitting there is no way to know exactly what is going on.... but it IS inside the 1-2%.

"Everything that we are, that is not the chimp, is not as smart compared to the chimp as we tell ourselves.

Maybe the difference between combining motions for sign language and building a space shuttle isnt as big as we think.

How do we decide? Imagine another life form, 1% different from us, in the direction we are different from the chimp. Think about that."

Now do you see? He is using a what if. You think his what-if is faulty based on what? He is using Occam's Razor and all of his scientific method, and the direction he is heading in is quite logical. Almost perfectly logical.

There's no point in getting into it, because it's tiresome, long-winded and probably futile. But sometimes when I see people wanking on about how shit Obama and the state of affairs in the US is, I want to bellow from the rooftops, "YOU THINK YOU'VE GOT IT BAD??????" I despair danny, half the time I don't know what to think. I'm thinking about retreating back into my bubble...

Having said that, I'm so glad you're up for using your vote this time, too. This is what needs to be pushed forward now, people using their votes to bolster the other parties, bring them into the spotlight so that people at least consider other options. The Labour/Cons/Dems need some competition, they need to be put in a position where they have to TRY HARDER! We simply cannot survive with the choices we've got now. Well we can, but I'd rather fucking not!

WOW...still regret that I voted for him, but he's a knowledgeable guy.

Hey mate, don't worry about it, you did the right thing, something had to keep the republicans out. I urge you to do it again.

No I didn't. You don't choose the lesser of two evils, you make the system work and produce better results. Obama is a war criminal.

I agree, so I guess a non-vote would have been in order, considering your two-party system. However, I like to look at the silver linings and in my opinion, your vote ensured that things didn't get as bad as they probably would have had McCain/Palin gotten in to power. And, all leaders are war criminals, or just criminals...

I've never voted in my life, because I refuse to pick the best of a bad bunch... but I will be using my vote next election tactically, because until other parties have a chance in hell, we're all doomed.

I've not voted either, ever. I detest the system, i think the voting system and potentially democracy is flawed or limited and we'll end up in a species-rut because of it, working against each other until we run out of resources and die.

But i know i can't sit here complaining about the rich fucking manor-born tories stealing our country from under us if i didn't help to keep them out. I know me and everyone like me is responsible for them getting in.

I should have at least spoiled my paper or been more active in my protest if i wanted to protest the system in that way.

I was hoping the riots were the start of something. Change has to come from the youth and i suppose soon i won't be in that category anymore!

Not to rain on guy's parade but, big deal. Everybody knows how to sign "Thank you." I'm curious to know if Obama even understood what was being signed TO him. He was SAYING "Thank you" to all the other people anyway... :-/

Yeah, that's what I thought, haha. Then I figured from everyone else's comments, obviously everyone doesn't now how to sign thank you. The only saving grace of this vid is unlike other politicians (probably) he just took it in stride and didn't act awkward or patronising at all, just said thank you and moved along, as he did the rest of the crowd.

There are lots of a$$holes out there

Porksandwich says...

It's been in some television shows too. I think Southland had an episode where some kid would throw his bike on the ground and make like the people hit him or someone had hit him. Then they'd either take the car or steal whatever they could out of it while people were checking on the kid.

Kid really can't be prosecuted since he's a minor, and.......good luck on the rest.

Soon as it's on TV, it seems like you start to see those kind of crimes in the news. Not sure if it's new awareness of it, a surge in the crime, or it catching people's eye because it seems kind of fantastic since it was on television.

And there's another less obvious crime that this video made me think back to with the guy in the street being on crutches.

People faking disabilities for quick cash. Homeless people do it.....I've got a funny story about this I'll stick at the end of this comment. And there are people who go around with these little US flags with a piece of paper on it that shows sign language, and it might be legitimate in some cases. But they show up in fast food joints and go out to the tables, throw out some sign language and point to the paper and another that asks for donations...then give you a little plastic flag and leave quickly. They don't have any kind of charity affiliation that you can see....

And the homeless guy story. My dad and his cousin worked at the GM factory. The cousin used to give guys money because they'd claim they didn't have enough money to eat (lunch money basically) because they didn't make enough. And even after my dad pointed out that they make the same or more than both of them do, he still felt sorry for them. Well this changed when my dad showed him the "homeless" guy that would sit out in front of the plant during their shift changes. He was older maybe 50-60 and would tell them how bad it was for him and probably get 10-30 bucks each shift change, in the early to mid 70s. One day the cousin gave him a buck and my dad laughed at him, and this cousin is kind of a hotheaded guy so he accuses my dad of being a heartless prick, etc. So my dad gets him to walk with him to the edge of the building and he points out a nice caddy sitting there idling WITH A DRIVER, and tells him to check for that car every day that "homeless" guy is around. The days he wasn't out during shift change, the car was not there. The days he was there, car was sitting out there idling. The guy made enough money by panhandling at the GM plant to hire a driver to drive him around and was there nearly every day the plant was open....getting money from the workers and very few ever caught on. Got some other "homeless" people stories, but this one is by far the best I've ever heard.
