Real-time, interactive 3D Holograms are now a reality.

Seeing that in real life at SIGGRAPH gave me a headache pretty quickly, unfortunately. It strobed a lot. I don't know if the projector was too slow or if the mirror speed was slightly off or irregular. But it's a very good idea.

Blender Siggraph 2006 Demoreel

Impressive? As a person who has attended more than a dozen SIGGRAPHs, there is little on this reel that looks like it was created in this decade. It wasn't until the architectural walk-through where I saw some evidence of radiosity, and the liquid demo did I see anything that used techniques that didn't exist in the mid-90s. I'm sorry if this sounds snobby, but for the most part this looks like it could have been done on TOPAS or Cubicomp, two packages that disappeared in the early 90s. Or Amiga-era Lightwave.

EyeDrops - More Bells and Whistles

I first saw this at a SIGGRAPH. The main thing about this video was that the animation was driven by MIDI. The basic animation (the objects and how they interacted) was created, then linked to MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) channels and notes.

Computer Animation WAY Ahead of it's Time (Back in 1993)

The name of this video is "Panspermia", it was presented at SIGGRAPH in 1990 and did NOT feature music by Jan Hammer. It was created by Karl Sims and Thinging Machines Corporation. It was rendered on their Connection Machine, a massively parallel supercomputer featuring 64000+ processors. The original video is available on Archive.org.

One of the highlights of SIGGRAPH 2003 (July 27-31) is the screening of Tim Tom, the Jury Award-winning student film, directed by Christel Pougeoise and Romain Seguad, former students at Supinfocom in Valenciennes, France.

True 3D Display - Japan SIGGRAPH 2006

Taken from Bluesnews.com (an excellent geek site, and they link a lot of their media from VS)

http://www.ohgizmo.com/2006/08/06/japanese-scientists-create-true-3d-display/

"Any sort of technology that uses precisely aligned, intersecting infrared lasers to create small amounts of plasma tends to worry us a little, seeing as plasma is, well, quite hot. That hasn’t stopped the folks at Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) from developing a true 3D display using this very technique. The device, on display at SIGGRAPH 2006, is able to produce up to 100 dots per second, which in turn are used to create a true, three dimensional image."
