Maddow: The Truth About the Lies About Acorn

KnivesOut says...

If you think there's no substantial difference between the talking heads, then you haven't been paying attention.

Maddow is a journalist. She's not an entertainer. She's not a rodeo clown. She's not a demagogue. She's attempting to bring facts to light. Whenever she has a guest on her show, especially when they are potentially confrontational, the first question that she opens with is "did I characterize what you said (did) fairly?" She has never shut off someone's mic, she has never called them names, or gotten into escalating shouting matches with her guests.

She is nothing like Rush or BillO.

Phone Sex Pranks - Motivational Speaker

I wish I had the ability, like these phone workers, to completely emotionally detach from what I was doing, but engage enough to be effective.

I think your emotions shut off on their own when you do a horrible job for long enough. But you're right it is remarkable that she can improvise while completely not giving a shit. . . That would actually make a great seminar topic.

Food, Water, Clothes, Shelter....and Cellphones? (Wtf Talk Post)

(you can easily pay rent and food for $674 a month)

Where? I live in a pretty low-cost (aka poor) area and the cheapest I've seen an apartment in the last few years is $600/month. I've also got a really crap stomach, so I eat a lot of cheap, bland food (pasta, soup, salad). Maybe I could live on say, $700/month if I gave up my car, my phone, heat, and shut off my electric and water.

>> ^imstellar28:
I don't have a car or access to mass transit, wheres my free car?

It's ok; I didn't have transportation when I lived with my mommy and daddy either. One day, when you're a big boy, you'll have a job and your own place and you can get a car then if you want.

So Battlestar Galactica is Over. Thoughts? (Scifi Talk Post)

NicoleBee says...

I started the series by watching the finale. I'll definitely be watching the rest, now.

It sort of reminded me of the end episode of babylon 5 somehow. I was expecting JMS to trot out and shut off all the lights on the galactica.

Interesting way to apprehend fleeing hostage taker

I was thinking it was going to shut off after 10 seconds or something, like they do in bait cars. But I have to admit, that was way cooler. I most definitely shouted "Holy Shit!" when it happened.

Jill Price - The Woman Who Could Not Forget.

mauz15 says...

I just hope she lives a fairly 'normal' life. Being able to recall every single past experience can lead to terrible consequences. The brain forgets or shuts off many things for a reason. Sometimes it even alters past memories without us even noticing. Imagine if she suffered a physical trauma or psychological abuse?

VideoSift Fundraiser (Sift Talk Post)

campionidelmondo says...

As crazy as the idea of shutting off the site to non-members is, I think MINK is just trying to brainstorm ways of saving this site, so I think it's not fair to shoot him down like this.

As far as opening the financial books of VideoSift.com goes...I don't really care about it. I'm sure other hosting options are being considered and weighted. Switching the host is not a decision that is to be taken lightly anyways. But the idea in itself is not that crazy (again, I'm not in favor of it). Non-profit organizations that accept donations (like Goodwill) do have to open their books to the public, at least they do have to in many countries. But again, I'm not interested in the details of that.

What I would be interested in is the system this site is built upon, namely VaroCMS. If this site was built upon a well-known system, such as Wordpress, Joomla, etc etc I could rest assured that it operates very efficiently, without a lot of bandwidth or server power going to waste. With the closed-source system VaroCMS I'm not so sure.

Here's a small example of what I'm talking about: I just visited 5 user profiles, all of them charter members. None of them has a custom CSS in use, but for each individual profile I visited, a new .css file was cached locally. Ok it's only 10kb per .css file, but stuff like this keeps adding up. Waste is a thief...

I'm not trying to pin lucky to the wall. Building a complete CMS from scratch by oneself(?) is such a ginormous task that I shudder at the mere thought of it. That's why I wouldn't have considered doing that for a site like this in the first place. The question now is how can the site's system be optimized to save even the last drop of bandwidth and servertime? Again, with a closed source system like this it's all in lucky's hands and that's alot of work he's not getting paid for.

It's 4:40 in the morning.... do you know if YOUR car alarm is going off? [MAJOR UPDATE] (Blog Entry by MarineGunrock)

NordlichReiter says...

>> ^MarineGunrock:< br />I did buy it used - but there is no secondary alarm system that I know of - I would have went off by now. Besides, as far as I know, it's not possible to install a secondary alarm on the car. I can't even get people to touch it to put a car starter on it.
If you so much as tinker with the electrical system, the computer shuts off to prevent theft. It then has to be towed to a dealership to be reset. (That's my understanding, anyway.)

Kill switch technology. One of the main reasons you take your car to a "certified" radio technician to change the radio.

I personally would relish seeing some wanker trying to steal my car, and then get in and try to drive it while the starter doesn't even turn!
