Shawshank Redemption - "I Guess I Just Miss My Friend"
The Godfather? Great. 2001? Neat. The Shawshank Redemption? Timeless.
...Rosebud? psh
A hilarious take on Matrix Reloaded (Rifftrax)
>> ^Throbbin:
I like the Matrix Trilogy. All 3 of the movies were entertaining and fun.
I challenge internet-movie-nerd-ragers to list a single movie that didn't suck balls in their opinion (no porn allowed). A single movie. Then the rest of us can take pot shots at it.
The Princess Bride, Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca, and the Godfather! And because maybe that's not really fair, here are some movies that it's okay to dislike: Predator, Conan the Barbarian, the Shawshank Redemption.
Shawshank Redemption score, Stoic Theme
Shawshank Redemption is quite possibly the best movie ever made.
Who's the better actor? (User Poll by Throbbin)
I like Morgan Freeman because he's always a wise and empathetic character in films. He doesn't have the breadth that some of the others do, but he can nail a role so perfectly that it's hard to imagine any other actor playing that role. I'm thinking Driving Miss Daisy, the Shawshank Redemption, Lucky Number Slevin, and (my favourite) Lean On Me.

Uncomfortable Movie Plot Summaries (Cinema Talk Post)
Shawshank Redemption: Convicted double-murderer befriends criminals, extorts government, defrauds employer, steals clothing, escapes from prison. Never found.
Sure, I'm Decent.
Damn. Now i want to see The Shawshank Redemption again...
Jimmy Carr Pegs Pornos
that Shawshank was tragically overlooked by the Oscars
that Kevin Spacey was amazing in American Beauty
Jimmy Carr Pegs Pornos
What does he say about Shawshank Redemption and American Beauty? Can't understand.
Shawshank Redemption - Rare Deleted Scenes (5:52)
Thank the gods that didn't make it. There's a lot of stuff in there that just doesn't work. Tonally, visually, etc... it just doesn't fit. Especially all that stuff about the summer of love, giving it some kind of historical context. I didn't think that was appropriate. I LIKED how Shawshank, aside from some of the obvious things, didn't seem STUCK in some point in history. Its just a solid drama, and that stuff would have made it less subtle.
Oi. Oi. (Blog Entry by UsesProzac)
Perhaps the act of learning is its own reward? Whether they get to use that knowledge to amass material goods to make life easier is of secondary importance. I know that sounds idealistic, especially given the (assumed) fact that your students probably have far more pressing concerns than gaining happiness from reading and understanding Shakespeare. But if they can retreat from any of the ugliness in their world to a mental space of their own which gives them happiness, wouldn't that be worth it to them? I'm kind of thinking along the lines of what Andy Dufresne told other inmates in "The Shawshank Redemption" about taking Mozart and Bach, etc., with him into the hole (solitary confinement). It's the thing 'they' can never take away from you.
What subjects are you tutoring? What ages are these kids?
[edit] You could also make the point that even if the subject itself won't give them any particular happiness (I heard a rumor that some people don't derive pleasure from abstract mathematics, but I don't really believe it), rising to the challenge and overcoming it certainly will. Not to mention the self-confidence it will give them, and how that self-confidence can feed into every other part of their lives.
Watchmen - International Trailer
I can only recall one movie adaptation that was as good (if not better) than the original -- Shawshank Redemption. Not that that means much at'll but who cares if it lives up to the original. You get what you want from movies; look for the moments and hold onto 'em. Compare if you dare.
