Sharks Attack Submarine - Blue Planet II Behind The Scenes

Shark

jmd says...

I belive part of the trick is the fact that the screen is not that clear to begin with. It looked like a refracted window in a fairly murky water with little visibility, and at first I figured it was a lens trick so the aquatic life couldn't see in. The second part of the trick is "expecting something but in reality expecting to get nothing" when you pound on the glass, and suddenly SHARK.

Is there some kind of new technology or something going on here? I have difficulty believing anyone mistaking a flat display for a window no matter how good the picture is or how bad the viewer's depth perception is. This guy in particular was inspecting it and obviously trying to figure it out.

@AeroMechanical:
I watched it a few times, because at first I thought part of the 'trick' was that they vibrated the panels. That would have been cooler, but I think it's simply visual along with a loud noise of the bang of the shark.

I think apart from simply the surprise element one way that makes it work well is that it is a huge screen, and you have to be really close to it to touch it, so it is all you see.

(and of course 1000's of peoples were surprised by it, a hundred of those people were video'd while doing so, and we get to see the best one of those recorded reactions, God bless the Internet)

Janice Min: Predators in Power

newtboy says...

I agree.
Even worse, he had on a black guy who meets with, befriends, and changes white supremacists, collecting their KKK robes as he goes, and Bill seemed to not even be listening to him, but just waiting for him to pause so Bill could change the topic...repeatedly. You could see it on his face that he was annoyed, and he must be one of the most patient men alive.

I used to like Bill, even saw him in person(a letdown), but he's getting douchier all the time, and more politically biased too. I think he's jumped the shark.

The Current War (Trailer) - Edison/Westinghouse/Tesla

Fantomas says...

Some pretty nasty stuff was done to discredit AC current during the 'War of Currents', such as Edison electrocuting several animals.

I also agree the casting choices seem poorly made, my mental image of Tesla certainly doesn't include him playing pool.
I think Bowie's portrayal in Nolan's The Prestige was great though.

Edit: Turns out I was wrong. Tesla was quite the pool shark.

How we feel about modern art most of the time

yellowc says...

You're probably looking for "Contemporary Art" but this piece might well be "Modern" by definition.

Anyway read this book: https://www.amazon.com/Million-Stuffed-Shark-Economics-Contemporary/dp/0230620590

Spoiler Alert: Rich people scamming other rich people who then scam other rich people later. It's a cycle of perpetuating false value because unless you're the very last person ever to hold the item, it benefits everyone to keep the false value alive.

The nuisances allude me as I read this book quite some time ago but it's fairly interesting.
