Good Old Canadian First World Problems

xxovercastxx says...

This actually reminded me of something goofy from work.

My company releases service packs for our software roughly monthly. On the quarters, we release a 'major' service pack (SP1, SP2, etc). On the following month we release an 'A' release (SP1a, SP2a, etc) and on the third month, we make a 'B' release.

My tech lead was joking that from now on the 'A' release is to be referred to as the "Canadian Service Pack".

Most of this video, to me, sounded like minor griping ("I have to move the mouse to the bottom of the screen!" or "I have to do an additional click!"). Raised a few actual issues with it, but overall, I don't mind it. When I first tried Consumer Preview, it was a mess. But since then, they've done a number of improvements. I commend MS for trying something new, it's not perfect but has potential.
I'll be buying it now, and benchmarks seem to show improvements in speed over Win 7. I just hope MS improve the usability with Service Packs and updates (rather than solely security and bug fixes). It is new, it isn't perfect, it will need updates.

They are critiquing an interface. Number of mouse clicks and mouse travel are pretty good ways of determining userbility. Its not really a minor gripe when you do it 100s of times a day, or an unnecessary layer simply confuses. Yes they are looking for problems with Windows8, yes thats their job. They also pointed out a few positive things, hell they even went as far to say that fullscreen start menu is a more intelligent use of screen estate. I'd certainly say its very aesthetically pleasing, but it does seem to have come at a cost. Oh, and apparently its good for touch screens which most PC users won't give 2 shits about.

I also find it commendable that MS should try new things, but it was criticism of Vista that resulted in Windows7. From what I've seen of Windows8...well it seems to me they have their priorities wrong. I'm sure it'll improve over time...then they'll call it Windows9 and ship it

Chain of Fools : Upgrading Through Every Version of Windows

kceaton1 says...

I just thought I'd point out that I've ran my main computer (of course I'm a hardware geek, so I know my stuff--no conflicts is another way to put it) for 4 years on Vista SP2 64-Bit WITHOUT ONE CRASH (this is a: on for 24/7 as it acts as a media server and Windows Media Center Extender-provider)! Now I'm on Win 7 64-Bit and same deal, nothing, no problems, no crashes, and I have my fair share of peripherals plugged in.

People need to realize that somewhere towards the end of Vista and into Windows 7 Microsoft has taken their crappy old software and made it work extremely well, considering what it has to do. It has drivers for virtually everything and if your a scientist, engineer, or something similar you're using Windows for this very reason: Windows will recognize your device and allow you to write a driver to let you do whatever you need it to do; easily!

People are afraid to switch out Windows XP. They're expecting to go through all the hassle only to get the same crap. But, Windows 7 is definitely a new breed of design for Microsoft. You can tell the old guys must have been canned or given an epiphany inducing lashing by Bill: Bill was retired from production for a long time, but when Vista came out, it literally pissed him off (as he was trying to use it himself) and there was a big bust-up/fight internally; so in a way I'm glad Vista started out as a complete and utter piece of crap that performed as well as a brick in a GrandPrix race. It led to Windows 7 and the service packs that made Vista very usable.

Again, back to why Windows IS successful even when it was crashing... You can right your own driver AND IT WORKS. Now days it works great, and the development software is pretty straight forward and is fairly good. That is the one thing he should point out in the video is the extremes Microsoft went to (and still does), to get an OS that would do everything. Yeah, it crashed and was buggy, but realistically you won't be running your new hardware on a MacOS. People with MacOS's (in the past especially) are one trick pony users. They do music or they do art. They don't need a virtual driver that supports incoming data from a USB blender/centrifuge that will let you write a program using the driver to tamper with the spin and modulation rate of the device while getting real-time data updates. Hell, the roving "Doppler on Wheels" uses Windows for this very reason.

Microsoft takes a lot of flak, but they filled their role very well and I was never surprised that it was buggy (however, I'll totally agree that the initial version of Vista was a complete an utter joke--like I said I didn't get it till they had their second service pack and had great user feedback; especially, since I went 64-bit).

Windows 7 though IS the OS to use or some sort of Linux distribution. But, with the great support built in, right off the bat (this time) and the easy to make drivers for developers and hardware vendors, it's getting hard to find a reason to not use it other than: "I hate Windows and/or Bill Gates".

Thought I'd write this bit if people didn't know the story or reasons why the latest Windows have changed direction so drastically.

My system is older but works pretty good. Its an AMD atholon 3000+ with a gforce 5200 (256 mb)videocard. XP with service pack 3. High speed cable. I have been coming to this site for awhile, since before the big crash, the problem just started within the last few weeks. I dont have the same problems on other videosites that I use. Just wondering if it was just me.
I guess I could try other browsers, I do have chrome , safari and firefox. I just never needed them untill Joedirt pointed out that I'm fuckn stupid.
Anyways...Its not that Im impatient, I have let the frozen page sit for minutes to see if it will load. Task manager reports "non-responsive" so I have to end task.

While the tech is really cool- I've come to my senses and will now commence pummeling MS in my usual fashion, thusly (ahem):

This will be fantastic when the product guys make it run on Windows Live Hotmail® Passport™ Series SilverLight™ 2011® Ultimate Edition New with Bing™ Service Pack 11.

That was very cool. Hat's off to Microsoft. (something I don't say often)

Quite big of you to say that, dag!

11 features you won't find in Windows 7 (Geek Talk Post)

Deano says...

I've recently bought my first PC with Vista. Initially it seems nice enough but there are problems around the edges and this is with the service packs.
I use logmein alot and remote control is now flaky whereas with XP/2000 it was fine. There seems less control/features in choosing my desktop icons and windows explorer is a confusing mess that has to be rescued with an install of Filebox Extender.

Performance doesn't seem overly quick though I could disable aero I suppose. Other than that I'm grateful that Office 2000 works.

Fundamentally though, I see no one unifying feature that makes me think that my computing experience has been revolutionised or enormously improved in some way. From what I hear the same lack of ambition infects Windows 7 as well.

Good old Microsoft!

Why I dislike Microsoft: Part 11 (Blog Entry by dag)

Hotmail is free. My Apple ME.com email has an annual fee.

Here's a gripe about Macs that is irritating me today, simply because I'm dealing with it at the moment. Why does Apple have to release a new OS version every two years or so? Seriously! It's fucking me up with my software (and hardware) purchases!

OSX Tiger was released in 2005. OSX Leopard was released in 2007. Now OSX Snow Leopard is coming out tomorrow. This is fucking me up! I just purchased a brand new, factory-sealed Mac Book Pro in 2007 with Tiger installed and now it's a fucking relic?! What crap. All the new software I need to purchase (or upgrade) requires at least Leopard. Can they just get their OS right and be done with it for a while?

Windows released XP Pro in 2001 and it still works adequately, even though it certainly has it's own problems. I have that installed on one of my machines I use frequently and I never have to worry about software or hardware upgrades requiring a newer version of the OS to work. Sure, they may require an update to the Service Pack, but it's all free and easy to do without purchasing a whole new OS!

Oh, and I just purchased a new Blu-Ray external drive, but the Mac OS won't play protected BD movies. Oh and don't get me started on iTunes updates with a 80MB download that happens every time a new syncable device change happens (which is VERY often)! And most important what do apples and felines have to do with each other? Nothing. It's confusing. Cats don't even like fruits, because they're carnivores.

There. Those are some legitimate gripes for you Apple-Cult hipsters to choke on for a while.

CNET reviews Windows 7

demon_ix says...

There's a RTM version out already, so we're beyond beta.
I've been using the Windows 7 RC as my work machine for a few months now, and I've had no complaints about it whatsoever. I did skip Vista, however, so I can't really compare the two very well.

The taskbar is excellent now, and is very easy to manage. Window previews are an excellent feature, that also appears when you alt-tab.
Device installation, simple networking, basic configurations and many other tasks are very simplified now, and the entire OS looks great (granted, better than XP, would be about the same as Vista).

I work as a network administrator, and there are several enterprise features I'm looking forward to implementing, like Bitlocker encryption on laptops and USB drives, BranchCache, Applocker and the whole Server 2008 network installation environment (granted, that has been around for a while, but since we never upgraded to Vista, we've had little use for it).

Is it a clear and useful upgrade to Win XP? Not really. The moments where I say "damn, I couldn't do that with XP" are very few, and are generally tied to the start menu search bar, which existed in Vista. But remember, Windows XP only got good after it's second service pack.

4.5 years on one XP install? Whats your RAM consumption sitting on a fresh reboot? I go about 1 year max before XP performance is too much to suffer any longer.

This is a KILLER free product
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

I just finished an "annual" rebuild yesterday. I set up three bootable XP installs in paralell, one for work, one for games, and one just in case. These have saved my ass in the past when something went tragic and I could not afford downtime.

I've got the rebuilds down fast this time, its sweet having a USB thumb drive preconfigured with your chipset drivers, audio drivers, video drivers, service pack 3, all your work-ware and all your serial numbers before you begin the rebuild.

If anyone wants to play around with stuff sort of like this, but you dont know how to code, etc.... download a program called Alice.. its free from carnegie melon and can animate things while showing you a little about object oriented programming. Your imagination is pretty much the limit.

"Free scripting and prototyping environment program for 3D object behavior. Runs on Windows 95/98/NT."

Your demo ran ok after locking up for a quick second on starting up the exe as you stole all my databases j/k.
