Asian Chick's Awesome Hand Ninja

Gabe_b says...

>> ^shagen454:
Oh man, the title of this video reminds me of some hipster guy (not that I have anything wrong with "cool" people or whatever label we need to give people who are culturally aware) that pissed me off yesterday. I go to a certain liquor store a couple of times a week and usually there is this korean guy who is the owner working. I went into the liquor store, see this young white kid working the register that I've never seen before. He was kind of awkward in the way that he was overly conscious that he was working in a shitty liquor store - so as he is bagging up my beer I try to make small talk and ask, "where is the asian guy?" I thought it inoffensive enough ; just trying to make the situation less awkward and this kid responds, "what?" and I repeated and he replied "He's Korean." I didn't really give a shit to get into an argument about it considering Korea or South Korea is specified as East Asia. Did I really make a horrible mistake or was this kid just a total dick?

Kid was probably just feeling awkward and blurted out the first thing he thought.

A mediocre translation attempt for anyone who cares :
"How do you do. I would like to show you taekwondo [debatable she does that bit super fast]
"Ready?" [Fighting sounds]
"One more time" [Fighting sounds]
"You also do Taekwondo" [Fighting sounds]
"You too do Taekwondo" [Fighting sounds]
"Then... "
[Counting one to ten while doing press ups]
"Could someone please give me some help?"
Second hand "What would you like me to do?"
"This ____ please" [Couldn't make out the verb ~_~. Could be "hold"]
"Certainly sir"
[More counting]
"Now, are you feeling well?"
"Now, in a moment the champion will arrive" [yay for konglish]
"So, champion has won the belt. What move did you do to win the champions belt?"
Second Hand: "What move did I do?"
"Yup" [Champion hand attacks Sansaengnim hand]
"No, no stop!!"
Second hand: "Cobra Twist!"
[After many listens the only word I can make out is "Animal", Doesn't seem to be a grammatical sentence as it has a noun at the end. so I'm gonna guess "Now I will fight this animal" :-/]
"No no, stop it"
Monster Hand: "Farewell"

Anyway, the language is Korean and the hand dude is supposed to be a taekwondo instructer rather than a karate sensei if you wanna add a tag. Taekwondo doesn't get much love.

As the grumpy hipster said to the shagen454 "[s]He's Korean"

Mentally Challenged Man Beaten to Death

Payback says...

Ok, for those of you who are curious but don't want to watch:

Snarky, sarcastic comments from Sensei White Trash.

Karate Kid-ish statements from the victim.

Blackbelt Marine attacks victim, I would say almost unprovoked, the victim claimed to be just doing a non-contact exposition, not a fight. The victim obviously brought a SuperSoaker to a gunfight. What he says is so out in left field, you don't need to know Karate to realize he's full of shit.

There is actually a fight, and the victim actually gets a couple decent hits in, but more dumb luck and speed than anything.

The victim gets pushed into a corner, and shoved by a couple students, but he is still on his feet, and DOES "say uncle". The fight should have ended there.

Blackbelt Marine still hammers away at the victim, knocking him down, possibly unconscious.

THEN THE PIECE OF SHIT, DISHONOURABLE, FUCKTARD STARTS HEAD STOMPING THE VICTIM.

Finally BM gets called off by the REST OF THE STUDENTS, not the Sensei, who is a bullshit fucktard in his own right for letting it go that far.

Then we are treated to a closeup of the 1/4 inch wide, non-stop trail of blood from where they dragged the victim outside.

"ASU aikdio"

Maybe this very scene was the basis of Saotome-sensei's kata then! Wouldn't surprise me in the least. After all it was staged by one of Katori Shinto ryu's most distinguished proponents.

Saotome-sensei's bokken and jo are very different though from Saito-sensei's, who was taught the most by Osensei in bukiwaza matters. Osensei based most of his swordplay (he didn't teach any sword kata per se) on Kashima Shinto, in which style he briefly enrolled. The Kashima shrine is directly on the opposite side of the river from Katori shrine, so maybe Saotome-sensei saw fit to bring something from Katori in aikido too? But Saotome-sensei seemed at one time to follow Kashima Shinto (viz. the bokken shape)... Anyways, Katori and Kashima are like cousin-ryu so the basics remain the same.

"You should relax your wrists."

Well, it's not because is wrist is bent that it's tense. Apply nikyo ura to your own wrist (like we do in warming-up) or have it applied to you by someone else. Your wrist is bent but still your keep your wrist relaxed, or at least you should to avoid injury. But here again, in waki kamae the point is moot since you will need to change your grip before striking, even if you strike from below.

"And every kumitachi can be done differently from Dojo to Dojo depending on the teachers."

Yes I know full well, hence the question. It's simply that I do not practice ASU kata, only Iwama (I practiced ASU nito at two seminars but that's it).

Death Note (Blog Entry by lucky760)

Great Show! A friend recommended it to me about two years ago when it was still only aired in Japan and we had to get a subbed version. I cosplayed (Yes, I am that nerdy) DeathNote that year and not that many people knew the show, but next year there were a whole lot of Death-Noters out there.
Here is photo of the cosplay- I'm Ryuk hugging a random friend (people thought I was guy, it was hilarious) http://www.flickr.com/photos/jwgrote/3023504183/

"Why Aikido Looks Fake" - Explanation of Ukemi (Falling)

kagenin says...

To expand on the Hakama point he makes, hakama were designed to be compatible with horse-back riding. You can't ride in a skirt, so the hakama has two pant legs. In that respect, you could make parallels between Hakama and Chaps. Within the context of combat, however, they're long enough to obscure your feet if you just barely bend your knees, and hiding your footwork can help hide what you're going to do next - its one less thing your foe can read about your moves.

Regarding Ukemi, yeah, he makes some good points. If you're going to practice the technique, you need to know how to "take" the technique. Learning the proper way to roll-out and high-fall is a very big part of learning Aikido. And its not that uke are taught to not resist techniques, on the contrary - it may be very beneficial for an uke to resist application of technique, in order to ensure nage understands some of the deeper principles behind some techniques. - this tends to happen more in classes specific for yudansha training (and boy, did my wrists hurt after those classes...). But resisting joint-locks and pins can lead to some nasty injuries, and part of learning ukemi is learning how to minimize the risk of injury in those techniques.

The kid sounds like a seasoned beginner who's probably had to field the tough questions about the "real-world" applications of Aikido. And if I were his sensei, I'd be proud of the way he articulates some good counter-points.

Next time I hear someone ask some "real-world" questions, I'm showing them the police handcuff techniques, though.

Morihiro Saito 31 Jo Kata Demonstration

Bidouleroux says...

>> ^Kagenin:
As a side note, the Jo was developed to defeat Musashi's two-sword technique, or so the legend goes. The Bo staff was too long to get close enough to Musashi in a duel (this was when Musashi was using wooden swords to duel). The Jo, on the other hand, was shorter, and quicker to setup a defense and counter-attack in the rematch.

This is true, at least as passed down in legends since there are no documents from the time. However it is false to think that there is a connection between Shinto Muso Ryu, developed by Musō Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi after his defeat against Musashi, and the Jo developed by O-sensei. O-sensei's Jo is an amalgam of yari (spear), bo and bayonet techniques. It is said O-sensei was so good with the bayonet he became chief instructor not six months after entering the army. For an example of Shinto Muso Ryu: http://youtube.com/watch?v=H_wv6JdY2lI. Notice the starting position, the overhead strikes and the thrust at the end which is made without sliding the hands on the jo at all.

What is called Jodo by the way is a dumbed-down version of Shinto Muso Ryu for Kendo practitioners.

Man... I remember learning the 31-Jo Kata. This brings back many memories of my Aikido training.

Saito-Sensei is awesome.

Martial Arts Instructor Beats Up His Students

Trancecoach says...

This guy has serious issues. Taking out his own personal aggression on his students. And the students pay him for the beating. Upvoted merely for the reason of promoting a video that clearly shows that legitimacy does not equal quality in the realm of martial arts training. The fact that this dude has access to a dojo does not make him a qualified sensei -- or even psychologically balanced.

Steven Seagal is modestly your god and sorry for the pain.
