Japan Earthquake Swarm Google Earth Animation
Interesting... in the time before the 8.9 on this map (it is now classified as a 9.0 by the USGS and Japanese seismologists: http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=2727&from=rss_home) there was a relative lull in activity.
Not that I'm an expert in seismology, but it would appear that without the "maintenance" quakes, there was a hold back of serious pressure causing the big one to occur.
