I think of Megan Phelps-Roper, once prominent member of WBC, now "reformed". She was the sort of "Social Media Manager" for the WBC. She used twitter to further spread their message but, ofc, the world of twitter stares also into you. She began to engage in a sort of dialogue with those that responded to her hate filled tweets and over time the WBC grip on her was chipped away. In the end I think she actually married one of those that engaged with her on twitter. Cool Story. Bro.

Anyhoo. So it can be done but it doesn't happen on the picket line or in protests. I mean, with some of these people you can't even agree on the definition of "human"... I really strongly doubt the value of allowing such groups to have a voice for the sake of having an opportunity to denounce (ostracise?) them further. It takes carefully considered, long term, personal debate.

My feeling is that his is happening not because we have suppressed such ideas for too long and now they are boiling over...they are boiling over because where once discontented individuals were alone with their prejudices and fears now they can find in minutes a group online to agree with. The suppression of these fringe ideologies wasn't the cause, the cause is that the internet seems to have rendered such suppression ineffectual. How we now challenge these festering online dens I'm not sure...

Also, and I hate to go all reducto ad hitlerum here but if there was ever a time, discussing neo-nazis must surely be it.... Hitler spoke and spoke and spoke and his bad ideas didn't fall into the shitter fast enough to save the lives of all the millions of Jews and those that fought against them.

Fascinating read into how one of the Westboro daughters came to leave the church. Not that I wish to equate Westboro to Mormonism quite, it just gave me greater sympathy for those trapped inside, and an insight into how even the most hardened dogma can be eroded if given enough time and compassion.

Ah, good old Mr. Roper... you could always rely on him for a good laugh.

I love this because it seems they did this anti protest exactly right. WBC's agenda is to incite anger and to draw out the worst in people. It's so easy to go out there and just want to punch Shirley Phelps-Roper right in the mouth, but then they win. Going out there and starting a festive dance party around them was just classic. My favorite signs were "God hates Jay Leno (team Conan ftw!)" and "Vampires suck!"

Dressage and jumping, how excellent, and very impressive to me. I'm sorry to hear about that which caused the cessation of your riding.

Finland. Sounds incredible. What mounts did you sit. The impressive Finnhorse of which I have only read, and a long time ago at that?

The preponderance of my riding was Western. Quarter horses primarily, Morgans, and a Moroccan Barb. Tack was Spanish/Mexican style ropers, Texas double rigged with swell fork, Spanish parade/show. Used a snaffle uniquely among my friend's and family. I liked the crazy horses. Rode English a little. Best friend and neighbor had tack. I liked it. Jumped a little. More on western rig. My Quarter horses hated it when I would set them up to have to jump, rough with a swell and horn.

I thought I would always ride....

This was back when I was in Finland, started when I was 10, and had to quit around 18 after my dad died. I have never tried riding western style Would be awesome to try it, though.

I did some dressage, but show jumping was my passion. I wasn't successful at the national level, but in local shows I kicked some butt!
