Richard Feynman on helping the Manhattan Project

Skeeve says...

1. I don't think he was being smug at all. He even comments that he should have rethought his involvment after Germany was defeated.

2. He didn't murder anyone. People die in wars. If we label everyone who played a part in the death of an enemy during a war a murderer, there would be very, very few innocent people.

3. Yes, 246,000 people died, but that is a minuscule amount compared to the millions who would have died if the war didn't end when it did and the ~70 million who died in the war overall. Feynman bears no more blame for the deaths of the Second World War than anyone else.>> ^The_Ham:

I dont like how smug he is about murdering 246,000 people.

246,000 people.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on Conan: Death by Black Hole

westy says...

I'm all for more science stuff and promoting knowlage and importance of science and for people to see that science reality and the universe is exciting and interesting and its grate that Tyson will get people involved in science.

but at the same time the way he talks is so annoying to me , his books also come across as really condescending and his analogies are annoying, I think the way he presents and the way he talks is suitable for 12-15 yr olds but as an adult when I listen to him or read his books I feel like I'm having a museum tour designed for school kids.

I just wish Tyson spoke and communicated ideas more like Richard Feynman where he communicates scientific idea's in a simple way but without over emphasizing things and without coming across as condescending.

Thing is it has to be hard trying to get the balance right. and ultimately it could be a guy dancing around naked waving his penis about so long as it gets more people into science and motivates them to research things or be rational and resable then that can only be a good thing.

Excellent video. We should all seek the truth. The truth from science, from our politicians, and, most importantly, from our gods. To question, and doubt, is the beginning. As Richard Feynman said; "Once you start doubting, you start sliding down an edge, which is hard to recover from. When you doubt, and ask, it gets a little harder to believe. It's much more interesting not knowing, than to have answers that are wrong." This man has freed himself from the dictats of religion. His freedom was hard earned, but he had the tenacity and intelligence to see it through. Sadly, not many of the brainwashed and desperate believers have his qualities, and will live their lives as abject slaves to their various faiths.

Hah! Nice Thx, I learned another thing today.

In reply to this comment by HaricotVert:
Feynman actually used a strip club as an office and defended it in court.

From Wikipedia:

"In Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!, he gives advice on the best way to pick up a girl in a hostess bar. At Caltech, he used a nude/topless bar as an office away from his usual office, making sketches or writing physics equations on paper placemats. When the county officials tried to close the place, all visitors except Feynman refused to testify in favor of the bar, fearing that their families or patrons would learn about their visits. Only Feynman accepted, and in court, he affirmed that the bar was a public need, stating that craftsmen, technicians, engineers, common workers "and a physics professor" frequented the establishment. While the bar lost the court case, it was allowed to remain open as a similar case was pending appeal.[12]"

I wish I could've bought him a drink at a strip club and just listen to him talk all day.

I believe per his own specified criteria in this video he'd be too distracted to think.
