Important Information about the Energy Saving Light Bulbs

davidraine says...

Apart from the useless "Red Scare" garbage and the insulting constitution thumping, the congressman from Texas raises a good point about Congress passing a law mandating CFLs without providing for recycling plans or an awareness campaign regarding their toxicity. I imagine some of this will sort itself out by 2014 as the issue gains more press, similar to the information "crisis" surrounding the digital television conversion going on today.

The Government could throw me into prison for this video

twiddles says...

Scary yes, but not the truth.

I voted for this before reading the actual bill. While I find the whole concept of the bill to be reminiscent of the "Red Scare", it does not outlaw any speech or make anyone a criminal that uses speech to advance a political or ideological agenda. Reading the entire bill (not just the parts pointed to here) reveals that the bill's purpose and limitation is to create a commission to study "Home Grown Terrorism" and the methods for mitigating such.

Clinton wasn't so bad. But if you're older than 8, that means you're not into Bush or Clinton. If you don't like Bush you probably don't like his dad or Reagan. Then maybe Jimmy Carter was the last respectable president? If he's not good enough for you, then you probably don't like Ford, Nixon, or LBJ. Kennedy was a big war hawk like Bush, with the bay of pigs fiasco and other attempts to set up puppet governments in foreign countries. And kennedy escalated the vietnam war. Eisenhower raped Iran and replaced its growing democracy with the Shah because of the red scare. Truman bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So.... Maybe you think FDR was the last respectable president?

I personally think Clinton was OK. At least his hawkish foreign policy worked and didn't get us into any long-term quagmires. He made some mistakes:
1. Failure to veto COPA
2. Failure to veto DoMA
3. Falure to veto DMCA
4. The welfare-to-work bill.

Obama explains: Why vote for me over Clinton

He's miles ahead of the rest, but still a bit too conservative on some issues. But it'll probably be another 40 years before a president has the balls to try to undo what the Red Scare did to the currency and the pledge of allegiance.

Laws that require public displays of religiosity, such as saying oaths ending with "so help me god", should be repealed.

Christian activists disrupt Hindu Senate invocation

I believe the "under God" part of the Pledge of Allegiance was added during the Red Scare some time in the mid 50s. So not only does it conflict with freedom of religion, but was also set up under pretenses of frightening the nation. Kind of changes the meaning around, doesn't it?

But I wouldn't call them extreme, either. Killing an abortion doctor - now that's extreme.

Michael Moore v. Fred Phelps (Krazy Anti-Gay Khristian Kult)(1999)

theo47 says...

I hate to be the one to tell you this, Wumpus, but you're an idiot.
First of all, Westboro Baptist wins by Fox News simply providing them a forum. If you'd be able to get past your seething hatred for Moore, you'd see that making fun of them is far more effective.
And your anti-socialism rant was hysterical. Yes, you've read Ayn Rand, congratulations. You still don't know a damn thing about this country, the world, or its economic systems. Each and every government in the world is a MIXED economy, and would collapse if they completely attempted either extreme. Your diatribe has its paranoid origins in the Red Scare and McCarthyism. If a thought had ever made its way through your empty head, you'd realize what a dolt you look like making such generalizations. Seriously, get help.
