man, whenever i see someone jumping down snowy slope i remember the avalanche that took with him 7 of my friends a month ago on a not so demanding 2000m high mountain some 10 km from where i live. they were on a training hike for alpine climbing course they attended. there were 15 people in the group and 2 of them were very experienced free climbers and mountaineers. this incident happend on 15th of december 2007. here's an article on one of our cable news channels. there are also some video clips of the rescue when they were piloted off the mountain down to where ambulances took them further to a hospital (just a block from where i live). one of the climbers was a co-woker of mine. he's into free climbing but has little less experience alpine climbing so he attented this course for some months before this happened. he got off well, just bruised and in shock. the avalanche started just 100m before they reached the peak. as it happened nobody expected any of that cause there was only 10-20cm of snow on ground. but it was snowing all night before and it was very windy. that caused the unstable, fresh powder to accumulate on top and they somehow tripped this huge patch of snow that drove them down a very steep slope through a gorge that ended some 300m downhill. there were also 6 other friends of mine, most with minor injuries, two girls had more severe injuries. i met one of them just last night, she got out of hospital few days earlier. she's got broken leg and she needed some surgery on her jaw. she was joking that she will always trip the airport alarms now that she's got 6 titanium plates in her jaw nice to see her smiling and so optimistic after something so shocking. she will still need few months of recovery before she's ok but all of them said that they feel really lucky and kinda reborn after that meet with matilda

It's become part of Bush's surge propaganda to equate sectarian insurgent groups in Iraq with Al-Qaeda, especially given OBL's comments in his new video.

"A numerically small but politically significant component of the insurgency is non-Iraqi, mostly in a faction called Al Qaeda-Iraq (AQ-I). Increasingly in 2007, U.S. commanders have seemed to equate AQ-I with the insurgency, even though most of the daily attacks are carried out by Iraqi Sunni insurgents. AQ-I has been a U.S. focus from very early on in the war because, according to U.S. commanders in April 2007, it is responsible for about 90% of the suicide bombings against both combatant and civilian targets. In large parts of Anbar Province and now increasingly in parts of other Sunni

U.S. commanders say they are trying to enlarge this wedge between Sunni insurgents and AQ-I by selectively cooperating with Sunni insurgents - a strategy that is controversial because of the potential of the Sunni Iraqis to later resume fighting U.S. forces and Iraqi Shiites. The strategy is reported to have led to increased tensions between Maliki and the lead U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus."

This of course is perfect for both Bush and OBL.

After years of talking about sectarian violence, Bush can now fear monger that leaving Iraq would create a terrorist state formed of the AlQ's Caliphate, giving him more blank checks to continue the surge and the war. Think January 2009.

While OBL can garner more support from radicals since America's president is giving him such constant praises about military operations in Iraq. Sending political bombshells via videotape in safety somewhere in the area between Pakistan and Afghanistan slowly rebuilding his organization, preparing for more attacks avoiding the attention of the US military and special forces because they are all in Iraq. He even had time to color his beard.

So both are playing into each others objectives at the expense of American and Iraqi lives.

Sadly, Hedges was killed in a car accident in 1997. If you want to know who influenced Eric Mongraine (and countless others) here he is.

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform in the Napa Valley several years before his death and I must say this brought back many memories.
