UK Threatening to Raid Ecuador Embassy to Get Julian Assange

thumpa28 says...

I would quote back to you the bit where you mention Rosa Parks, but i sense it would be pointless.

The point is, should someone be allowed to get away with rape because bringing them to justice 'would push them too far'? Should any criminal be forgiven their crime because they threaten others with more crime? That would be a charter for scum like Assange to get away with murder.

Seriously, I cant believe youre comparing Rosa Parks to a scumbag like Assange. Rosa Parks took a stand at the risk of her liberty and even her life. She represented freedom against tyranny and fought for what she believed in.
Assange believes in nothing else but self promotion and when that landed him in deep water, self preservation at the cost of everyone who sheltered him and even paid for his freedom. Assange has never taken a stand in his life, if he had been on that bus he would not have supported Rosa Parks, he would have fled at the first sign of trouble or got coerced into the lynch mob. How many chinese dissident informants, fighting much the same fight for freedom against overwhelming odds, are now in jail or worse because Assange released the unredacted cables out of nothing but another attempt to keep himself in the limelight?
Assange should face the sexual assault charges, we in the UK have a long and lengthy tradition of separation of the judiciary and the organs of state, which includes our intelligence services. As much as it pains me to say so, Assange would receive a fair extradition hearing (whose decision he fled) and a fair trial in Sweden. Hes done the damage now, whilst I wouldnt complain if he had a sudden CIA inspired cardiac arrest, thats the realm of Bond and Bourne.
Dont confuse Assange with Wikileaks. Wikileaks was started up with a reason in mind, Assange took it over as his one man puppet show.
>> ^dannym3141:
There is such a thing as taking a stand. Sometimes, when humans are pushed beyond what they think is acceptable, they are willing to risk terrible consequences.
Rosa Parks did it with racism. How many poor 'negros' got slaughtered, beaten ...god knows what the trickle down effect would be... in the aftermath of ANY bold defiance by their brethren at the time? So then should we prefer the status quo? Should Rosa Parks also take a dum dum to the nuts because of she didn't tow the government line?
I think Assange is/was doing the world a great service, though we may not know it yet and we may never if we don't come out of this dark age. At some point, someone had to make a stand against this all-pervading government corruption. If he is a rapist, then he should be brought to justice - but how can you trust law/court justice when the law/court is effectively an involved party?>> ^thumpa28:
Assange is a self obsessed rapist (believe it or not that what they call people who have sex where the other party refuses or withdraws consent) whose lust for publicity has led to lots of death. The 1300 in Kenya by his own admission and the Taleban thanking wikileaks for helping them identify those who cooperated with the americans and what about an Iranian spy to name but a few we know about. Chinese dissidents, middle eastern journalists, people fighting for democracy in dangerous places have suffered because of this self serving turd.
How many people have suffered and died so Assange could lap up the publicity, shouting about the freedom of speech whilst gagging his own staff and of course planning to stiff the morons who looked after him whilst he was fighting extradition and especially those who posted bail. Everything out of his mouth is designed to keep Assange safe, by playing on the Great Satan angle and finding those fools idiotic enough to lap it up and throw money at the cause, especially those who posted bail for him, then left looking like right twats when he did a runner to the Ecuadorians. What a bunch of muppets.
Quite frankly, after all this nonsense the US wont bother to try and extradite him. I just hope the UK grabs him when he steps outside the one place the fucker can hide, preferably using a dum dum round to the nuts, before dragging his pathetic self off and slamming him into jail where he will face trial for being self obsessed, even during sex.
>> ^Hybrid:
You think this isn't about getting him extradited to the US via Sweden? That's one thing I and nearly everyone else in this thread do agree on. Be in no doubt, if Assange ends up on Swedish soil, he will end up on US soil soon after.>> ^Babymech:
Hybrid, don't be ridiculous. It would be illegal for Sweden to extradite him to the US. It would be political suicide for any Swedish politician or authority to be anywhere near involved an extradition to a country that practices the death penalty. Barbarians.

Before i even read your comment, in what dimension did i compare Rosa Parks to julian assange? I read it a few times before posting to make sure i wasn't. Please read it again and adjust your comment accordingly, this must be a misunderstanding?
Furthermore (though this is beside the point), if this were 1955 and i used the same argument to support Rosa Parks, you would probably be outraged that i dare compare a scumbag like Rosa Parks to ....I dunno, the blokes who said "I'm Spartacus"? Choose any you like pre-1955.
Regardless, the two parties are irrelevant. The underlying point is that when people are pushed to what they consider their limits (and our limits are all different) then they are prepared to risk hurting themselves and others in the interests of those who come after us.

Regardless, the two parties i use as examples are irrelevant. The underlying point is that when people are pushed to what they consider their limits (and our limits are all different) then they are prepared to risk hurting themselves and others in the interests of those who come after us, and the point you missed was that it is impossible to tell whether this is "a valiant stand" or not.

I should mention that i'm also british, and i'd insist that it's a bit naive to think that britain is immune to corruption, especially in the wake of the last few years. Our government is surely at least as corrupt as the US's. As a british man, i'm appalled to think that anyone (not necessarily you) is in favour of disrespecting another nation by marching into their embassy, compounded by the fact that THIS DOESN'T CONCERN US. Hell, if you're that much behind justice, why aren't you arguing in favour of britain granting him asylum and doing everything in our power to make sure he faces correct charges and doesn't disappear off the face of the earth? Are you after justice or baying for blood!?

Whatever. Disagree on what assange is or isn't; it's clear that you have strong feelings about assange and as i said before, this just shows how difficult an impartial trial would be for him. Please don't disagree that britain needs to concentrate on BRITAIN for a while, though.

Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson-The Horror, the horror

RFlagg says...

Mary Baker Eddy, their founder, believed that Christianity, her flavor of it anyhow, should be demonstrable and provable and thus a true science. Of course this is crazy talk, but that was the thought. Even if we still saw the same kind of miracles that the Bible says Jesus performed (and there is no reason, if the Bible was true, it would have stopped with him as it didn't say it would stop, but in fact his followers would do greater things), it wouldn't make it a science.
I recall seeing a Christian puppet show like this when I was a kid, the main puppet looked exactly the same, but I have to doubt it was the same thing as this sounds like it was LA only, where what I saw was in Ohio or Denver at the time I saw such programming. However, lots of these puppets tend to be fairly generic...

Strange I was watching HD on a pc long before TVs could do more than 640x480, no adverts to annoy you and the ability to find and get whatever you want.

So. People were watching TV on a PC before either were even invented. They're called them puppet shows.

What kind of creepy internet stalker tries to dig up dirt on a person by diligently parsing through thousands of comments? Look, I'm flattered and all but seeing as how you're probably a 46 year old balding man, and I'm probably a 13 year old school boy, I'd recommend avoiding the inevitable confrontation with Chris Hansen and stick to drugging men in bars and having puppet shows with their penises if I were you.

...and that's how you do a run-on sentence

Not that anybody cares but I'm bored at work sooooooo...

What up playas and hustlas my REAL name is Marshall, aka Marsh E. Fresh and I live in Pacific Beach, CA. I am 25 and I work full time as a project manager for a commercial construction contractor. By night I am a college student aspiring towards a mechanical engineering degree. It's slow going with the full time job and all but it keeps me out of trouble. I've got no kids that I know of, however, I donate sperm every day (let me know if you see a child that looks half-kleenex, half human). I have an awesome beard.

I love the sift because it's full of people smarter than myself that I can learn from, then turn around and mutilate what I've learned while bestowing the knowledge upon somebody else. It's a great atmosphere here and as you've probably noticed I try not to take many things seriously. I hope to never grow up (except when it comes to that baby-dick issue I've got).

Republicans, religion and the triumph of unreson (Religion Talk Post)

MaxWilder says...

Some of you people are clearly dreaming. As much as I would like to see the party of stubborn ignorance die a horrible death, the fact is that the Democrats are not all that much better. The complete lack of effective leadership and unity in the Democratic Party is quickly dissolving any momentum that Obama had coming in from his historic election. This is partly due to the lies that the Conservative Zombies believe without thought, but more due to the inability of the Democrats to pick a plan and just go for it.

I only voted for Obama because I knew he would do less damage to our once great nation than "Five Plane" McCain and Governor Barbie. But I am still amazed at how he is actively trying to rebuild the Republican party by insisting that they have a say in legislation that they have no way of stopping. Add that to the unsurprising fact that no administration will ever prosecute the crimes of their predecessors (or face diminished power and the threat of their own legal grilling later) and it becomes painfully obvious that modern politics is nothing but a high stakes version of the WWE. Every match they come out spewing hateful slander to get the crowd riled up, but none of them would ever get what they truly want without a plausible contender. And the only people really profiting are the show's producers behind the scenes, which in the case of the American political system is corporations and billionaires.

Mark my words, there will be no change until we can get money out of politics. And since everybody is focused on healthcare, wars, abortion, religion, socialism and other bullshit puppet shows, I don't see any changes coming anytime soon.

Sunday Show Roundup: Georgia Veep Sweeps

biminim says...

Mitt Romney reminds me of the old Thunderbirds puppet show. He looks wooden, and someone is pulling his strings. Why couldn't he admit that Georgia attacked South Ossettia with rockets and artillery in an unprovoked, criminal fashion? That would be simple to do. Just say, "Yeah, we support the Georgians, but they made a mistake and are suffering the consequences."

To Believe, or Not To Believe, that is the Question... (Religion Talk Post)

schmawy says...

Dear Internet,

I would sure appreciate it if you laid off the religious folks a little bit, and I'll tell you why.

We all know how clever and mighty and wise the collaborative brain can be, that science is designed to divine truth from the physical world through rigorous experiment and deduction. We have seen how technology can bring wrath and rapture beyond the greatest parables of any holy book. We can move mountains and divide seas with our own will and might and it's all grand. We can look at the world around us and declare that there is no need for a God of any kind. There is a reason that God will never disappear, though, and it's in that lump of gray in our heads, the very lump that convinces us that we can be rid of magic men in the sky forever.

At a certain young age, something happens in the human brain that creates gods, and it is a survival adaptation that even Darwin and Dawkins would be proud of. It's best described by the following experiment...

A child is shown a puppet show in which a character is playing with a ball. Also on stage are two boxes, one marked "A" and the other "B". The puppet places the ball in box "A" and exits. A second puppet enters and removes the ball from box "A" and puts it into box "B" and then exits. The first puppet returns, and the observing child is asked which box the puppet will look in to reclaim it's ball.

Most young children will say that they will look in box "B" because that's where they know the ball is. At a certain age however, the response changes, and the observer will now say that the puppet will look in box "A", because that's where the puppet left it. It's the ability to look into another's mind and understand the thinking and being that's not their own. This I believe is where gods are born.

It is helpful in predicting which way prey will run when hunting. We apply this potentially but not certainly uniquely human skill to each other as well as to the sky, the stars, the weather and the world around us. It is a fundamental brain activity that has aided us greatly in our survival and proliferation, but there's a catch.

We are afraid when we are alone. We are even worse off when we are unloved. I assure you that just about anyone out in a boat alone in the middle of the Atlantic or deep in the wilderness would start to project a personality on their environment. We're built that way. It's something that many people need to do today, as antiquated as it may seem to many. This imagining of an all knowing and omnipotent being is important to so many because without it, they would have no love or guidance. They would be truly alone and truly terrified. Even in their time of greatest pain and most unfortunate circumstance they can at least know that someone's watching, and that at the end of their troubled lives, they'll have comfort and company.

But you, Internet, want to take that away from these people, and I think that's mean. If we loved each other like we're supposed to, we wouldn't need any goddamn gods.

Respectfully Yours,

Schmawy.

if as it did turning round
right back on through

and taking out the garbage too

breath scented fuse locked together ever grim
caused their untimely exit
from each and every little thing
we fly between never close enough to view
causing wrong resolution
crossed border line we're dropping in

{ and we
forever never win
silence every witness
ennui
forever never win
the case for existence } x2

thieves who stole the show a little left hand path to grow
show the true sympathetic
a mirror magic puppet show

and we all believe that the magic is in you
'cause there's facing the music
and taking out the garbage too

and we
forever never win
silence every witness
ennui
forever never win
