Is the male's neck supposed to look like he just swallowed a prairie dog?

Ugh, when I was a kid in AZ, I stepped in an old prairie dog hole and fell into a big patch of prickly pears. I got covered in the things from mid chest to ankle. They hurt sooo bad coming out.

The description says "ground squirrel"... so like a prairie dog or a marmot, but a bit smaller (they're all squirrels really, just different types).

Dramatic prairie dog had heaps of cultural significance - from a certain point of view. But maybe we are casting our net a bit wider these days.
