French Court Finds Church of Scientology Guilty of Fraud

^I'm no fan of Christianity, but it's unfair to compare well meaning Christians with the scumbags who run Scientology.
Scientology requires that you buy ridiculously expensive classes, books, treatments and potions in order to advance your level of religiosity. Most sects of Christianity accept voluntary donations, but do not require them in exchange for the right to participate.
Lock those sci-fi rejects up and throw away the key as far as I'm concerned.

They do -now-, but Christian churches have done their share of arm-twisting/extortion in the past. Let's remember the practices of selling indulgences, and tithing. Both of those were directly trading "salvation" for money.
Perhaps a better comparison would be to compare Scientology to a young Christianity. When you do that, they just don't look all that different.

That was one of my points over on the comment I made for this video: http://www.videosift.com/video/Scientology-Leader-Can-t-Handle-the-Heat-On-Xenu-Storms-Out

Scientology will learn from its mistakes and slowly become more and more "mainstream" as it grows. Until we start educating people that ALL religion is basically the same, we will have cults and religions (and really, there isn't much of a difference there if you look deep enough.

Christianity presently makes people shoot abortion doctors, deprive homosexuals of basic rights, and all sorts of other bigotry. Why isn't Christianity "dangerous" the way scientology is? Oh, I'm sure some will say that isn't ALL christianity, just the fringe, but the reality is that I'm sure Scientology has its moderates as well...

... Really people, if there was an all powerful force in the universe, there would be some consistency in religion. The very fact that there are so many different views should give you a clue that religion addresses a basic human need to understand the unknown, but isn't actually based on anything real.

Well, except for the Mormons... they are clearly right.

Remind anyone of anything..? (The Crucible, 1996)

The movie is centered around the Salem Massachusetts witch trials of 1692. The movie is based on the play "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. He also wrote the screen play adaptation. Written by {dfmarean@Cove.com}

A small group of teen girls in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts caught in an innocent conjuring of love potions to catch young men are forced to tell lies that Satan had invaded them and forced them to participate in the rites and are then forced to name those involved.

Thrown into the mix are greedy preachers and other major landowners trying to steal others' land and one young woman (Ryder) infatuated with a married man (Day-Lewis) and determined to get rid of his innocent wife (Allen).

Arthur Miller wrote the events and the subsequent trials where those who demanded thier innocence were executed, those who would not name names were incarcerated and tortured, and those who admitted their guilt were immediately freed as a parable of the Congressional Communist witch hunts led by Senator Joe McCarthy in 1950's America.

The Best Caller Ever on The Atheist Experience

14256 says...

Love has been linked to neurotrophins and other chemical inducements in the brain. Just like every other emotion. We've also learned how to play with those emotions, and if you don't think so, take a look at antidepressants and depressants that are used already to adjust emotions in people. Soon we may find a way to make love potion #9 with lasting effects (we'll save the ethics debate).

So yes, we can tangibly study love, and see love. We even have an idea of how love works.

God on the other hand, we have no direct proof. We don't even have direct proof of Jesus, except for the gospels that were written many years after his alleged death.

Jasminum: the hilarious Polish bread slicing scene

Krupo says...

Jan Jakub Kolski directed Jasminium - imdb link.

Excerpt:
The film is about love: primarily about love or love relationship between a man and a woman. The viewer is gradually introduced first to Patricia's unrequited love to the movie star, and as the story unfolds, also to Jasmina's tragic love story with one of the monks, and finally the unhappy love story of Natasza, the main character. And the movie is about love in a more general sense, or similar feelings between human beings: exemplified in the unusual friendship between the little girl Genia and Brat Zdrówko (Brother Sanitas), or Natasza's friendship with Patricia.
...

The precocious narrator Genia is the only person who does not have a tragic love story hidden in the past for obvious reasons. Therefore her narration of the story is fairly objective, with her adorable dryness adding to the humorous aspect. In the end, however, Genia experiences her own version of a sad love story when she must leave Brat Zdrówko.

The key to solving all the mysteries of love lies in finding the right aroma. The film is all about magical smell. This extraordinary idea also adds to the fairytale aspect of the film. The important fact is that Natasza's magic perfume works as a love potion only because the love is already there. She merely gives a little boost by caring and acting upon her sympathy. This leads to the final topic of the film: "saintliness," as the director comments.

The film's message is that the most important thing between people is love and caring, and acting upon one's caring for another person. When the caring and acting reaches a certain level, it qualifies to be saintliness. The final scene, when Brat Zdrówko becomes a saint, confirms this idea. As the viewers saw in the film, Brat Zdrówko is the one who cares the most, even about the piglets; he is the one who acts the most to take care of the entire monastery, silently and inconspicuously. This final message is conveyed again with "a sense of humor and tender attentiveness" as Zdrówko complains he cannot light the stoves with the stigmata his hands.

Sure, it's true I like to think of myself as a warlock of sorts. Before the snazzy 3 click method to create VideoSift I used to close my eyes and meditate with my finger tips just barely touching my laptop as if on a Ouija board. When I opened my eyes a website of my very own magically appeared as if by some kind of magical magic.

Some more spiritual people begged with me to stop, that I was toying with evil forces beyond my understanding and that great harm would befall me and my kin. But nay, I scoffed at them insisting Lord SiftBot vowed to cast a spell of protection with a level 72 potion. To this day and for all the rest I sleep with one eye open waiting, anticipating...

Evil Dead 3 - Army of Darkness - Alternate Ending

ashes2flames says...

There were two endings. This is the one that didn't make the cut.
Maybe that's a good thing.

"US and UK versions feature different endings. The first ending has Ash battling a she-demon in a department store in the present. The alternative ending has Ash imbibing a secret potion that would make him sleep one century for each drop of the potion he drinks. He then goes to a cave to sleep. However, he drank one drop too many and wakes up to find a barren post-apocalyptic landscape. The final shot is Ash screaming in rage at a red sky. The Great Britain video version shows the ''potion'' ending, and the version shown in US theatres showed the ''she-demon'' ending."
