One of the formative experiences of my life was after I finished college in Ohio, leaving my home in the NJ suburbs of NYC to drive, solo, cross country staying off the interstate as much as possible. I took the northern route until I arrived in Portland and then traveled south to L.A., and then returned East along a more Southern route.

In total, the trip took me about three months (August, 2001 through October, 2001). Not only had I changed during that trip -- the country itself, had also changed.

Sure, there are many minimalls and towns that look exactly the same (which, as it happens, was a welcomed respite of "familiarity," at times), but of the thousands of untouched natural acreage, this land is an experience to behold.

Nice. I have driven up and down different parts of 1-5, from LA to Vancouver, but never such a long trip in one go. Taking the coast is a slow slog. A cool route would be taking 101 north from SF to see the redwood and the coast, and then scooting back to 1-5 via 199 and Grants Pass.

Aside from the terrain, the night sky is stunning in the more isolated parts of 1-5. Driving around the Cali/Oregon boarder in summer months and seeing the milky way from a convertible is breathtaking.

Also, there's the State of Jefferson, which is cool.>> ^Yogi:

Take I-5 from SF to Portland. Some amazing scenery on that trip, especially it you're willing to go off track a little; and good beer at the end.

I've traveled from LA to Seattle by car 6 times in the last 6 months because moving to Seattle and visiting friends and such. Besides getting my time down to 17 hours for the trip I've seen some great stuff and I've never regretted driving even though I take the boring route. I want to do a Coastal Road journey next time...I think it'll be a lot of fun.

Oh! The Places You'll Go at Burning Man!

criticalthud says...

what amazes me is how many techies, artists and engineers - creative minds from all over the world (and especially silicon valley, sf, portland) converge on this place. the ideas that flow from this event are incredible, life changing, and benefit humanity.
so many people, while they are cursing the hippies and typing on their Macbooks, should really get a clue.

the only thing burning man org really does is create a place for creative expression. creative possibilities. then it just goes. and goes and goes.
imho, more countries should do this.

we are of course, dangerous to the establishment.

Drug use, rapes, murders and random deaths are in every camp, all the attendant chaos one would expect when socialists, anarchists, code pink commies and feed-the-flames libmedia descend anywhere. These protestors are not even 1% of the 99%.

Citation needed, motherfucker.

Idiots put all their links in an image, so you can't click on them and read the reports for yourself... hmm, I wonder why?? Oh, it's because there were no reported murders in the links! And no reported rapes in the links! Lesser events? Yes, a few. Completely unrelated events? Why, yes, several!

Here, for your reading pleasure, are all the links the right-wing crypto-fascist zombie airheads can come up with to marginalize the "dirty hippies" on the lawn:

Links originally from Pundit Press:

From Oregon Live: Primarily about a man who showed up at Occupy Portland, dismissed it as "an eyesore" and criticized its "lack of cohesion", and was arrested within days for starting fires. Also includes a few other accounts of minor drug posession, disorderly conduct, a weapons charge, and arrests of people for charges unrelated to the Occupy camp. Occupy Portland had a problem from near the beginning with homeless people joining the camp, and there were no services from the city or state to help them.

From Denver Post: A man who made an impassioned speech in favor of the Occupy Fort Collins camp was arrested as a suspect in an ENTIRELY UNRELATED arson charge.

From Gawker: A military veteran died of a self-inflicted gunshot, and the city used it as an excuse to halt all camping.

From Fox News: A "rash" of reports that consists of 1 accusation of sexual abuse and 1 accusation of sexual assault in Zuccotti park, 1 accusation of sex with a minor in Dallas, and 1 alleged sexual assault in Cleveland. Fox inflates this to "nearly a half-dozen" reports. The article also includes a number of unsubstantiated rumors of destructive behavior by Occupy protestors in various locations around the country.

From Komo News: A man accused of indecent exposure (completely unrelated to the Occupy movement) is arrested when spotted taking part in an Occupy Seattle protest.

From Redstate: Blantaly right-wing opinion piece which includes a number of links purportedly supporting the premise that the Occupy movement is full of criminals. The very first link is about the police entrapment on the Brooklyn Bridge. One of the links is the above piece from Komo News about an unrelated exposure charge. And another is about how Iran supports the Occupy movement (fear the boogeyman!).

From Reuters: This article is about the man shot by Berkeley police in a computer lab at UC Berkeley. No ties to the Occupy movement at all. But the Occupy protest was nearby, so it must be related, right???

From ABC News: A man is arrested for firing an assault rifle at the White House. He "may have spent time with Occupy D.C. protesters."

From The Daily Cardinal: Link broken; defaults to University of Wisconsin's Daily Cardinal homepage.

From New York Post: Article is about theives preying on the lack of security at the Occupy camp. Apparently all that police overtime is really helping...

So! All these articles, and they amount to... a few isolated issues that don't nearly account for all the numbers posted, and a couple of them are for unrelated charges where the person might have been caught in or near an Occupy event.

My overall analysis: Aside from QM being full of shit as usual, it's time to let the camps go. They made a splash, but now they are just being used as fodder for the right wing lie-machines. There are just too many unrelated crazies that come to the camps and interfere with the message. It's time to Occupy the polls, and put the energy into publicly supported legislation.

Occupy Oakland and Portland have been shut down...the crackdown is on so lets fight back!

That's just fuckn' dumb.
The establishment has already used unrelated violence (suicides and murders) to shut down occupations. All they need now is some dumb ass to start hitting (or worse by far shooting at) the cops.
What do you want? Change to the system--or really cool, mass violence.

That is not what I meant by "Fight Back" sorry if that was confusing. Ass.

So, what did you mean by "fight back" if you didn't mean what the words say?

Non-violent peaceful non-cooperation and resistance will always win in the end. Any try at violent rebellion will bring brutal suppression and the loss of the good will that the majority of Americans feel toward the movement--not to mention many dead people.

Fletch says...

Ok, some of the protests have been infected with the same anarchist numbnuts who join any protest just to throw bricks through windows, turn over cars, and cause any mayhem they can (like the abundance of idiots both here in Portland and up north in Seattle). They can only hurt the cause (whatever that is) by creating indifference in potential supporters. I can almost hear my father while watching this shit on TV... "damn hippies!".

But the videos I've seen so far have largely (solely?) been cops attacking peaceful protesters. If they are trying to discourage/scare people into not participating, then the answer is larger, louder protests. Their tactics need to be rendered ineffective. There haven't been any deaths yet, but that just seems inevitable to me if cops continue their bullshit and things escalate. And once you've released that Krakon, something's going to get broken.
