Hypnotic Ink Physics in 4K Slow Motion - The Slow Mo Guys

serosmeg says...

4k should be called 4x (4 times) or better - 2160p to be in line with every previous standard of video resolution. Why does everyone call it 4k? Are we rounding the width measurement up now (3840)? When do we ever round pixels? When did we switch from vert to horizontal pixels? I guess i have to start calling 1080 2k since its about twice as many mega pixels as 720.

... oh yeah, cool video.

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

MilkmanDan says...

I'm sure some of this is just resistance to change, but...

Didn't really like any of the differences. Old style had more functionality/information/etc. in a smaller pixel footprint. If I want the video to be big, I can fullscreen it. I like the older style Top New Videos, or Upcoming Videos list with ranks and votes easily visible in a small space. The old footer was big, but had stuff (links) that I actually used or referred to spread through it, and it was easily ignorable at the bottom of the page the rest of the time.

Overall experience is sorta like going from Office 2003 to Office 2010. I can tell that it is probably still capable of doing what I want it to, but I no longer have any idea how to make that happen, and I get the definite feeling that it has been designed for a "new market", which I read as "somebody other than me".

Probably one of those signs that I'm getting old.

...Sorry @lucky760, don't take any of that too seriously. Just my first reaction.

Pixel

Just a normal projection that maybe is being manipulated a bit in the way of graphics or when something starts. No dancers are being tracked and projected onto or around due to their changing positions. Its imperative the dancers are in the right place at the right time to make it seem as if they are being tracked.

I see no reason it couldn't be done right now.

Once you have the dancers position the rendering is pretty trivial.

Getting the dancers position with a Kinect is certainly doable... I'm not sure how well the Kinect would cope with multiple people in that lighting environment, but you could certainly rig the dancers with invisible IR emitters and track that.

It's simply a matter of cost.

edit: technical info on how it was actually done

When will this tech progress enough that they can render the effects in real time, using something like Xbox motion tracking to keep track of the dancers/props and have them actually effect the projections in real time, rather than projecting a pre-rendered 'movie' that they try to keep pace with and their place in? It would erase all the lag created when the dancers are 1/4 second off, or 3 inches out of place. That would go a long way towards creating suspension of disbelief for many, and sharpen up the performance immensely. Then we can have things like the bioluminescent forest done on stage with moving objects...like Avatar in theater form.
I love what they do with it, I just want to see it progress...and fast!
