It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia - Unless You're This Guy

I listened to it again after posting the link. I'll admit it was not as funny to me this time around. I do think it contains bits of brilliance, but yeah, comedy is hard to pin down, and it looks like eight-years-ago me and present-day-me can't even agree about this one.

This is two hours of the best, funniest stand-up ever recorded.

You point me to ONE performance of his that is actually funny. Like, is AT ALL clever. AT ALL witty. AT ALL insightful.

If you say so. I've just listened to 10 minutes of it, and that was a friggen struggle. It's such inane, juvenile shit. It's high school humour, and crap at that.
You find it funny. Fair enough. But none of that is clever, witty or insightful. It's all 'Say something dirty for a laugh', 'say something obnoxious about women'...

I like how you're speaking for "we" and "the sift". Eh. I like Burr... I actually prefer his podcast, because he just riffs. He's amazing at that... and it's not much like this vid.
Also, there's this: Bill Burr on The Moth which is probably the point I started paying attention to him.
In the most loving way possible, and in the words of Burr himself, Go fuck yourself!
>> ^spoco2:
@Deano "Everyone who has ever heard this realises what a talent Burr is and an underappreciated one at that"
Um, no they don't. I didn't, it would seem the majority of the sift didn't. Look, you find him funny, you find this bit funny, others did too. But don't be surprised that most won't.
And, I'm checking out some of his stuff on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imZ52DHBtug misogynistic crap, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dybby26QnU More woman hating.
This I like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h5kg5f8Im0
This is amusing until it gets to the part from the video two back that's just more women hating shit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3OkaJnlWFQ
So yeah, he can be funny. But you know what? Most people don't like just abusive comedy, we don't.
Sure, there's got to be some market for it, otherwise Andrew Dice Clay, with his complete lack of talent, wouldn't have become famous for just insulting people... but generally? Not going to happen.
And again, when it comes to something being sifted, if it's terrible quality, people are less inclined to listen to it, and if there needs to be context given to it for it to suddenly become funny, well that's against it too.

I'm not 'speaking for the sift' except to say 'I don't get how you can be surprised by this average video not getting much love here'... it hasn't. It's over two and a half years old, has had almost 1.5K views, and yet has 20 votes.

You like him, Deano likes him. I like some of his stuff. But THIS VIDEO is shit.

You sound like a real connoisseur of comedy. Dice is top ten of all time, and not just for that nursery rhyme stuff, which I never liked. (and I'm not talking about top ten most successful... top ten most talented).

You can go blue in the face ranting about the size of the stadium shows he used to do, but none of it is ever good comedy. It's not. He's not top ten of all time in any terms of 'good comedy'. It's all base, all simplistic, none of it is good. He's just not funny.

Now, me not finding him funny doesn't make him not so to many, but he is also not top ten of talent in anything.

It is astonishing to me that THIS particular video, from the best standup in the business, has not been sifted.

Really? You don't get why a shitty quality, hard to listen to video of a comic being abusive isn't sifted.
Yours and my definitions of comedy are worlds apart sir... worlds apart.

Wow, guy on the internet realises other people may have different opinions - hold the front page gents!

Yes it's unfortunate the video is not of the highest quality. Sometimes that happens. But context is everything which is why I added that.

He is simply not just being abusive. He's actually being very funny, coming up with spontaneous riffs on the city's sporting culture, insulting them in crude yet creative ways and then throwing in a non sequitur towards the end, which is a staple of comedy.

Everyone who has ever heard this realises what a talent Burr is and an underappreciated one at that. This certainly cemented his growing reputation at the time with standup fans and fellow comedians (this was in 2006, prior to that from 2001-2005 he was as he has put it "killing in obscurity". And every single Burr clip on the sift will prove that.

Now if you don't think Burr is funny, fair enough but please don't get on your high horse when you make a comment.

Geert Wilders brilliant speech

But, once again it is in your opinion that they mean to provoke, that is why there is a Judicial system in place, to solve these conundrums. Hence the reason that Philidelphia supreme court protected David Hackbart right to give the bird to a citizen, and a peace officer, because he was expressing his distress with his current situation.
In fact the city gave him 50,000 to settle the matter.
But I think we are arguing two different things, however related. Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression, which are invariably tied. You cannot have one without the other.

I admit that this is purely my opinion, and you are probably right, judicially this sort of rhetoric needs to be covered by the freedom of speech. If nothing else, then to ensure that people cannot be censored merely for being hot headed or lacking judgement in the heat of the moment.

However, I still feel that relying on emotional offense is an inexcusable element to bring to a discussion.

The problem with the way Carlin, and for that sake Wilders, seeks to offend people while proving his point, is that the point only reaches the people who already agree with him. When you give people on the opposite side of the spectrum, the people you really need to reach, an excuse to get offended, they switch off and ignore the central message entirely. That is immensely counter-productive when trying to spread ideas, and trying to actually make a difference in the world.

In the end, I guess it makes little difference when looking at which ideas flourish across the entire political spectrum, and which do not. Carlins words, and people like Wilders, will continue to be ignored by people on the opposite side of the political spectrum due to their reliance on offending people to convey their message.

My only hope is that the people out there with ideas, which could actually change the world for the better, don't fall into the same trap

Now, here is where it is different: Fuck you and your point of view. That is an expression of my distaste for your position on the matter at hand. Had I said, Fuck You! Then you can construe that as fighting words. That is not, under the law correct free speech. You must put context with the situation.

I see your point, but in my opinion both the examples you use should never be used in a debate, or publicized. By anyone, no matter what viewpoint they are representing.
I see neither "fuck you!" or "fuck you and fuck your opinion" as arguments. They are meant purely to provoke, and bring nothing to a discussion. In that respect, I see Fitna as a giant "fuck you an fuck your opinions" with incredibly little rational discussion or debate. Bringing that into the public arena is an extreme lapse of judgement as it creates much more emotional harm than rational discussion.
While you may be technically right that Fitna can be considered as freedom of speech, I don't feel anything deserves that label if it doesn't take itself seriously enough to atleast compose its arguments in a rational manner.

But, once again it is in your opinion that they mean to provoke, that is why there is a Judicial system in place, to solve these conundrums. If curse words were not freedom of speech then men like George Carlin would still be in prison.

But I think we are arguing two different things, however related. Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression, which are invariably tied. You cannot have one without the other.

An example of Carlin's thought process. This argument is exactly why the Wilders is in court in the first place.
