Faux News/Norton Antivirus fail

oohahh says...

>> ^RedSky:

^ What exactly do you mean by "antivirus scam"?

Most people, particularly those that don't use P2P or torrents and browse only well known sites have absolutely no need for anti-virus/trojan programs. Especially costly subscription ones when there free variants that will quell any latent paranoia.

Wrong. You can get viruses from websites. My Wordpress blog and three friends' sites were hacked and used to propagate viruses.

If you're going to use a PC[*], please use an antivirus program; free or otherwise.

[*] PC is here defined as "computer running Windows". If you are a Linux user or Mac user, you are, of course, smarmily resistant to these pests and can skip running AV software for the time being, ya smarmy bastards.

liberty (Politics Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

>> ^imstellar28:
You are saying that corporate boycotts are too difficult. You think changing governmental policy is less so?

Actually yes. I also think it can be more fine grained. Boycotting car companies that charge extra for seat belts won't make them standard equipment, ever. Ask lots of people "should seat belts be required equipment on cars?", and you'll get an overwhelming vote in the affirmative.

Also, since it's law, there's no backsliding. No making them optional in bad economic times, no new companies who have some unproven alternative that's cheaper, etc. If a superior safety device comes along, there's a whole series of regulatory agencies who can test it, review it, and approve it.

Perhaps there's an argument to be made saying seat belts and airbags shouldn't be specifically required, but instead earning a 4+ star rating from an IIHS crash test, but I don't see operating only by boycott as being a superior method for improving car safety.

Cultural changes don't happen overnight, they happen over years, decades or even centuries. Unfortunate for those living during that time period, but thats the reality of societal evolution.
However, when the government is in the way, cultural evolution grinds to a halt. How can you evolve if you are jailed for doing so?

I agree that it takes time, and that government can be in the way. On social issues, I'm already essentially a libertarian though. I'm a touch different in that I'd rather have government give positive affirmation of rights (gay marriage recognized nationally as legal, as opposed to government not recognizing marriage at all, just civil unions), but that's essentially just a semantic difference.

When it comes to more economic matters, I'm happy to call myself conservative in the sense that I'm okay with evolution being slowed down a bit. Not that I'm afraid of progress generically, but I think we should be careful about what we do, and make sure we've tested things thoroughly, and thought through all the implications before we go wild with a new technology.

For example, I'm in favor of bans on human cloning...for now. However, my reason for a ban would be so we have time to prepare a legal and ethical framework for the people created through such a process. I think the people who pushed that kind of a ban through had religion on their brains, and intend for it to last forever though. I doubt we'll see many bioethicists pushing for legislation covering guardianship, clone creation consent, etc. anytime soon.

I also hope someone is paying close attention to robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, etc. I'd hate for the first big breakthrough in self-replicating machines result in an unstoppable mechanical pest or virus.

Turns out I was looking too far ahead, I should've been worried about Credit Default Swaps to the same degree.

I'm not saying people only deserve they rights they can defend, I'm saying all people deserve the same rights. Start there, and let the culture catch up.
Governmental policy does not drive culture, nor has it ever - its the other way around. Why do you think I'm talking to you instead of my state representative?

On this we agree completely. I think we just disagree on where people's equal rights end.

Remember this video? I got to the end without disagreeing with anything they said. You're right that they left off the right to life, though that can be situationally controversial (abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, etc.) and it was supposed to be a happy feel good sort of presentation.

I think a right to life also includes the right to medical care, and access to preventative medicine, affordable healthy food, etc. I think paying for that is an issue, but I think we have a moral imperative to find a way to pay for it, in the same way we had a moral imperative to find a way to pay for manual labor once slavery was abolished.

Joseph Beuys - Sonne statt Reagan (1982)

Eklek says...

Aus dem Land
das sich selbst zerstört
und uns den 'way of life' Diktiert

da kommt Reagan und bringt Waffen und Tod

und hört er Frieden
sieht er rot.
Er sagt als Präsident von USA
Atomkrieg ? - Ja
bitte
dort und da

ob Polen
Mittler Osten
Nicaragua

er will den Endsieg
das ist doch klar.

Doch wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan
ohne Rüstung leben !
Ob West
ob Ost
auf Raketen muß Rost !
wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan
ohne Rüstung leben !
Ob West
ob Ost
auf Raketen muß Rost !

Er will die Säcke im Osten reizen
die auch nicht mit Atomen geizen

doch dein Krieg um hirnverbrannte Ziele

der läuft nicht Reagan - wir sind viele !
Hau ab mit deinen Nuklearstrategen

deinen Russenhassern
deinem Strahlenregen

Mensch Knitterface
der Film ist aus

nimm' die Raketen mit nach Haus !

Denn wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan
ohne Rüstung leben !
Ob Ost
ob West
Kalten Kriegern die Pest !
Wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan
ohne Rüstung leben !
Ob Ost
ob West
Kalten Kriegern die Pest !

Dieser Reagan kommt als Mann der Rüstungsindustrie

but the peoples of the States don't want it - nie !
und den wahren Frieden wird's erst geben

wenn alle Menschen ohne Waffen leben.

Wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan
ohne Rüstung leben !
Ob West
ob Ost
auf Raketen muß Rost !
Sonne statt Reagan
ohne Rüstung leben !
Ob Ost
ob West
Kalten Kriegern die Pest !.....

Sun Instead of Rain (English translation)

From the country that destroys itself and dictates to us the "way of life," Reagan comes bringing weapons and death, and when he hears peace, he sees red. He says as president of the U.S.A., "Nuclear war? Yes please, there and there." Whether Poland, the Middle East, or Nicaragua, he wants the final victory, that's perfectly clear.

2X But we want: sun instead of Reagan, to live without weapons!
Whether West, whether East, let missiles rust!
He wants to provoke those bastards in the East, even those without nuclear weapons, But your war over crazy goals just doesn't work, Reagan--there are too many of us!
Cut it out with your nuclear strategies, your Russian haters, your nuclear fallout.
Hey, wrinkle-face, the jig is up, take your missiles back home with you.

2X Yeah we want: sun instead of Reagan, to live without weapons!
Whether West, whether East, the plague on all Cold Warriors!
This Reagan is married to the defense industry, but the people of the States don't want it--never!
and there will first be true peace, when all people live without weapons.

2X We really want sun instead of Reagan, to live without weapons!
Whether West, whether East, let missiles rust!
Yeah we want: sun instead of Reagan, to live without armaments!
Whether West, whether East, the plague on all Cold Warriors!

Jimmy Carr on Scientology and Christianity

honkeytonk73 says...

Fantastic stuff from Carr again. And, on the money... As much as I hate Scientology, is there anything you can really level at them that you can't level at the other faiths?
Ludicrous story with no ability to marry it to any sort of reality at all? Check
Collects vast sums of money from its followers? Check
Encourages its followers to convert others to their cause or do their best to not mingle with the unbelievers if they can't? Check (oh yes, I know many Christians like this)
Has caused millions of deaths around the world for thousands of years... oh, wait, that's only the 'other' faiths.
Sorry, my bad. Scientology wins.

Things might level out a bit if you include all the millions of aliens brought to Earth on spaceships not 'unlike' DC-9 aircraft and were blown to smithereens via the use of hydrogen bombs..in volcanoes all over the Earth (though a number which were mentioned in the text did not yet exist at the time) releasing magical pest-like spirits into the environment which now cling onto our bodies and make us do bad things.

Del tha Funky Homosapien - Sleepin on My Couch

MrFisk says...

It seems nowadays friends step to me bogus
and end up on my couch at night without notice
it's cool to have a friend over every now and then
but I gotta have my space
and I don't wanna see their face
like every single day of the week
talk is cheap
you betta find yourself another place to sleep
it ain't my fault that ya moms got fed up
and now you wanna come to my crib and wet my bed up
you better find a job so you can get an apartment
and you can save your crocodile tears
don't even start
with the sob stories
I got enough from the other seven brothas
in the den playin' Genesis
damn I can't win at this
seems like I'm gonna have to flip
and tell those other brothas
that they're gonna have to skip
I've had it up to here with these lazy cats
sleepin' on my couch and I'm tired of that

People come to my house
and kinda wonder where the squadron's at
they're not gone
they're just down at the laundrymat
because they wear the same pairs of clothing
I'm taking up crazy patience just holding
my temper
I'm about to start charging rent for
every single brother
that kicked it with my mother eating biscuits
on Saturday morning like a family
the minute they step
it's like moms is crazy mad at me
'cause they're in my mother's room watching television
I feel like giving 'em the boot
and say the hell with 'em
but if I give 'em the boot
I'm not a friend though
even though my room
smells like dime bags of indo but
I can't pretend like I haven't been peepin' it
even mom knows that my brothas been sleepin'
on my couch for weeks
so your speeches fall flat
sleepin' on my couch and I'm tired of that

Maybe this was just my upbringing perhaps
but I was taught that I shouldn't
take seven day naps
at other brothas' cribs like I don't have a home
brothas on my couch so much there's like foam
coming out the seams
and a pair of jeans is missing from my closet
I wonder why I even bother being friendly
they're running my ass like the Indy 5000
they went and wrinkled my mother's blouse
when they snuck downstairs
for a midnight snack
and ate the last slice of bread
and a box of apple jacks
then they hit the sack
with the stereo blastin'
and even little Tyson is fed up
so I'm askin'
you all to jet
before I get upset
and throw each and every one
of you bums out on your back
my house is a mess
so step ya little pest
who was sleepin' on my couch 'cause I'm tired of that

Hypocrites... the whole lot of ya! (Wtf Talk Post)

spoco2 says...

I totally disagree with anyone that says it's alright to create a new account. It should be clear that if you are banned, you are banned even your sock accounts. No one should have two accounts. It should never be encouraged or even suggested. There should be zero tolerance for people that get one sock acct banned but keep their main account.

Oh come on. How in the hell do you ever propose enforcing people never opening another account? Utter madness.

Someone gets banned, they can start a new account from scratch, newbies have bugger all abilities, so to get their power back they have to play nicely... therefore, no problems.

If they somehow make a pest of themselves again via opening a gazillion accounts or so then you can get into IP banning or the like, but come on, suggesting that people may never open an account again is ridiculous.

People having 'sock' accounts which they use to vote their other account up is another story entirely and should get both accounts banned if it's proved to be occurring... but opening one account after you forget your old account, want to start afresh with a new name, are banned etc. should not be a problem for anyone.

You're driving... you're driving... you're driv-- OH SHIT!!

zombieater says...

"Poor things"!? I hope you mean the people driving the cars. Due to mismanagement of our national forests, deer have become a huge pest - defoliating forests in a few years and leading to a practical ecological disaster. An increase in hunting won't kill enough and control enough of these "poor things"; we need to reintroduce the most effective deer killers that have since been extirpated: top predators such as wolves, cougars, and coyotes.

NordlichReiter says...

There is only a couple of ways to deal with that. Smash it with the cupcake pan. Or call animal control... they will either take it away... or kill it.

If you got this problem, and do not want it to be killed, then you should call animal control... not pest control.

This is why you have printing problems!

@oxdottir and rottenseed: personally, I have had a vote embargo on QM for about a year now... I don't see it as playing into the 'popularity contest' mentality, but rather, as refusing to aid and abet a troll in his participation on this site.

This kind of behavior is just as bad. I have commonly seen people abusing QM and downvoting based on his name alone. If you want me to start trotting it out, there was a time when a little clique were abusing all of QM's videos. Granted some of the videos were just incendiary and crappy, but you should instead let those wither in the queue instead of auto downvoting on name alone. In truth QM has probably also netted over 20 inappropriate downvotes over the year(s).
Why are we correlating video votes with a person's comments? Just upvote good videos (regardless of who submits them).

I beg to differ... yes, if I were in any way ACTING against him... say consistently DOWNVOTING (vids or comments, etc)... I would agree with you... however, I chose inaction in regards to him simply because I did not want to enable him to be more of a pest on this site. I realized long ago that this was not someone I wanted to see with even bronze star powers, so I wanted no part in helping him get them.

However, I do think, if you were to look at it, I have actually voted for a few of his vids, because occasionally, he would sift something of undeniable merit... and I do quite clearly recall inviting him to join the HorrorShow after he submitted some slasher flick clips or something of that ilk, despite the fact that as a commenter he repulsed me even back then, but, on the whole, as most of his sifts were at best 'meh', I just stayed my votes... and I don't see anything wrong with that.

Eat This!

arvana says...

I agree with you, Smibbo, about the food choices. There's no question that Norman Borlaug and the Green Revolution have helped to feed the world. It's just that their methods have turned out to do a lot of harm in the long run, resulting in greatly diminished soil fertility and ever-increasing dependence on crop protection chemicals. So there need to be some sustainable alternatives. Organic farming still has a ways to go before it can feed the world, but to me it promises far more long-term potential than conventional agriculture.

As far as science being good for breeding plants, I'm not disagreeing in general. But I do believe that agricultural science has taken a wrong turn, and that the vast majority of research is following some bankrupt principles. My main objection is the utter lack of taking into account polygene relationships and complex biological systems -- they just keep breeding in "a gene" for this and that (whether by genetic engineering or conventional breeding) when the reality is that almost all characteristics are determined by polygenes.

And let's just imagine that they were really successful in producing a plant that was incredibly and permanently resistant to all pests and diseases. What would happen then? It would become an invasive species and crowd out everything else. To some degree this has already happened -- some of the genetics of Roundup Ready canola have crossed into wild rapeseed. And as to the effects on the human body of eating GE foods, that has had very little testing at all. Everybody thought Thalidomide was great, until all the birth defects.

So I'm not against science -- not at all -- I have just seen that scientists tend to get excited by the work they're doing, and forget or ignore the big picture and long term effects of their work.

And greed is also a great motivator in setting aside principles.

Eat This!

arvana says...

Smibbo, I wouldn't say there's much difference between agribusiness and pharmacorp. And it's just not true that the GMO's have been well tested before release -- I forget which documentary it was that I watched a while back, but it showed how every director of the FDA is a former board member of Monsanto. Pretty convenient, huh? They just wave these things through.

Dag: I totally agree with you, except where you say that organic food production has a lower yield than conventional agriculture. I have personally seen organic crops significantly outperform conventional ones -- organic growing techniques have advanced a lot too! And most conventional soils are now degraded to the point that they are essentially just an inert medium for soil-based hydroponics.

There are some free ebooks by Dr. Raoul Robinson that talk about breeding for pest & disease resistance -- I recommend Return to Resistance as a good starting point. Dr. Raoul is my uncle; we are currently building an open-source breeding foundation that will share seeds and encourage effective low-tech breeding methods.
