Penn & Teller: World Peace through Free Trade

How cooking shaped our evolution

obscenesimian says...

I disagree that thinking outside the human body is an advantage. Wikipedia is a prime example of how someone with poor education will attempt to win an argument by merely regurgitating what they quickly access online. Soon, maybe even now, people are realizing that regurgitation of factoids is no replacement for logic, experience and education. Phones and the internet are tools, which offer an advantage, but not without real thought.

I do however enjoy Penn and Teller.

P&T: "War on Drugs" Bull S**T: A Must Watch!!

Penn and Teller BullShit!-Bottled Water

Yogi says...

I've watched some Penn and Teller Bullshit! and it's not bad. The one that got me thinking they're a couple of idiots was the 9/11 Conspiracy Episode. I'm not a 9/11 Truther, but even a fucking toddler could tell they were Biased as Fuck in that episode.

It was basically like "Here's these crazies that think it was staged, and here's the counter argument." To counter the crazies they found a Firefighter who had his friends killed in the Towers, the most underhanded sympathy mindfuck you could think of. It didn't rise to the level of North Korean Propaganda.

They've done some good episodes and made some smart arguments. To me though, it's like watching Mythbusters, even and idiot can tell when they're doing it wrong.

Sure they did not show any. However, if you listen to what is said you found out that 1 in 4 people picked the bottled water.

Yeah, but Penn does tell you that 75% of the people in their taste test preferred the tap water, so you have the statistic truthfully presented. Your accusation is unfair.

You are an exception in that your tap water is not up to EPA standards. The fact that you have dirty tap water in no way invalidates P&T's argument that bottled water is less pure than the average consumer's tap water.

Bottled water is bullshit, and it's environmentally unfriendly too.

Yes this is all true. I have been on well water before, and with all the chances or arsenic and lead poison... I opted for bottled water. Actually I opted for Dr. Pepper. I think the real motive behind things such as this is to for people to realize that if they are drinking bottle water because it makes them part of the elite... well they are full of bullshit. Bottled water can of course be practical and sometimes the best option. If you are drinking water like a fine wine.. well that's bizarre. Maybe water tasting is something I am ignorant to.

Everyone has some sort of agenda. As long as we have our own ideas and logic playing in our part we should, for the most part, be fine.

Your thoughts were nice to see! Thanks for writing them down.

In reply to this comment by Nithern:
While Mr. Penn and Mr. Teller have a nice show, they do present an agenda. In this case, it sounds like they have yours and my best interests at heart. They didnt get paid enough from the bottle water lobbyists in washington under Obama's Administration. Under Bushs? Well, that president actually reduced funding for the EPA, as well as, reduce inspectors and testers on all US consumer goods for its eight years. So all those disease scares from meats, dog food, and such, is largely due to the republican's idea of what constitutes "correct testing for safety and health".

I myself drink bottled water largely due to circumstances Mr. Penn and Mr. Teller do not wish to talk about: reality. My pump is not city water. It has rust, iron (unrelated to the rust), and generally does have a 'unique' taste to it. While its ok, to bathe or rinse dishs in (the heated dishwasher removes the bad stuff from th surface of the plates....hopefully), its not suitable for human consumption.

Mr. Penn and Mr. Teller, did state their survey was unscientific. It was also, untruthful. How many people in their video, did they show, that stated they liked the taste of the bottled water, over the tap water? That's right, "none". That is why, this is merely shoveling an agenda, and not a public service anouncement, for the general citizenry of the states.

Media has a responsibility not to traffic in fear!

The american main stream media has been unreliable for some time, I mean I watch glenn beck and fox news just for the crazy! It's entertainment now, which can mean more fiction than fact!

Can't argue with you there.
I get much of my reliable news from Jon Stewart, videosift and the rest of the internet. But as "proper" news outfits continue to get more and more diluted into entertainment, the real news bits get harder and harder to extract.

Fox news is like an all-day late-night informercial: you are certain that the product will blend, but you're not convinced it will give you a six-pack in thirty days.

When more and more of the information you get about the world around you becomes as mangled it becomes easier and easier for those corruptible by power to take advantage of their position and of you. Look at the recent Wall street collapse, the media was yelling "look over there" and "bankers" said, "hey, nobody's watching. I wonder what happens when I..." and a few people made gobs of money.

This happened with Iraq and Afghanistan with Blackwater and other contractors and arms dealers; this happened over the disaster in New York in 2001, and it happened before that and before that.

In magic acts, they call it misdirection. (Though I do not believe the kind of events I mentioned to be so carefully organized. I think it is more a case of not-so-well-meaning people taking advantage of opportunities as they see them.)

A misinformed populace at the hands of clouded infotainment may indeed be part of the environment necessary for totalitarianism to be possible. So is fear, especially irrational fear.

Whether he knows it or not, Glen Beck, and others like him, are only making it more and more possible for the worst of their fears to come true.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

"There's no proof, they're saying, that it would kill the birds"..........
Who's saying? The same "There's no proof that global warming is man made" people?
Would someone please slap some common sense into anyone that thinks that eating big chunks of plastic is good for any kind of wildlife?

You can eat plastic. It just goes through your system. No digestion occurs, so no toxins will enter your system. Of course, you could choke on it... P.S. I'm a biologist.

Anyway, this whole thing is ironic since people have been touting the values of plastic over paper for years now. Save the trees and all that. If all that trash were paper, it'd be gone long before it got out that far into the ocean. I vote: tree farms, tree farms, tree farms.

"I don't see why people are so friggin shocked. Where do you think the garbage of the world goes? If we're not burying it and building cities over the landfills it's being dropped in rivers, lakes and oceans."

We have a tremendously huge amount of space for landfills... profound amounts of space. The paranoia of the 80's about trash and landfills has been debunked as a child of media hype and activist exaggeration. In addition, we now harvest methane from landfills. When they get "full", they are buried and these fills are managed by people who aren't moronic enough to dump... say... radioactive waste or anything to unsafe that might end up in the water table. Of course, we should fullfill the 3 R's as we were taught. Reduce, reuse, recycle... but we shouldn't sacrifice our reason. Penn and Teller gave a good shake to recycling on their show. I recommend it.

Penn on Praying Around Atheists

rottenseed says...

Whatevs...Penn is kinda being a baby. Like his young impressionable mind never knew of such evil things. It's just a prayer, he knows Christians exist, and he knows they're often pious, presumptuous, pricks. So get over it and stop acting butt-hurt.

And it's not like the analogy you had with the vegan and roast beef. Penn and Teller didn't go hungry because the group didn't cater to their preferences, they just had to listen to some bullshit.

but *promote anyway

Penn and Teller paint trick (commentary on censorship)

I usually love Penn and Teller, but I can't help but think they missed the mark on this. Either they can't see the other side of the argument clearly or I can't understand them in this case.

I cant bare Penn and Teller in the Bullshit series. They don't just talk to you about the subject like your a human being, they make a statement, then make it again louder with swearing, as though the "added emphasis" makes it more true, and then with more vehemence, and masturbate all over it like they are really really pleased with themselves for being the only ones with a valid thought or clue. there might be some substance, some times, to what they have to say but their style is so off-putting I never get to see that. I've always switched off before that. disgusted.

Policeman Pepper Spray Teen For Short Change

jwray says...

With a little sleight of hand, swapping a twenty for a ten from her left pant pocket out of view of the security camera, then ringing it up as a ten, then transferring the twenty to some hiding place when she walked out of the room, there's no way they could catch her by auditing the cash register, looking at the security tapes, or strip-searching her. You can't be 100% sure that she wasn't short changing the cop. Penn and Teller could easily pull it off. The cop probably saw it as resisting arrest. Common sense: If you don't wanna get pepper-sprayed by a cop, don't be yelling "fuck da po-lice" and resisting arrest. He used excessive force, but it was totally predictable and avoidable on the part of the cashier.
