2009? That part right there is the epitome of politics in any time or place. It's why nobody in their right mind believes that politicians can make the world a better place. These are people who've dedicated their lives to playing these games in order to see how long they can be the center of attention.

I disagree. I think that the following all made the world a better place:

  • Child labor laws
  • Minimum wage laws
  • Worker safety laws
  • Car safety laws
  • Environmental protections (ranging from national wildlife preserves, to endangered species protection to various Clean Air & Water bills)
  • SNAP (aka Food Stamps)
  • Unemployment benefits
  • Civil Rights legislation
  • Social Security
  • Medicare, Medicaid, S-CHIP
  • FDA, FAA, FCC, FEC, FDIC, FTC, NLRB, NOAA, NASA, ARPA
  • National Guard, Coast Guard, Peace Corps, Americorps

And that doesn't even cover the most basic legislation laid down by "politicians" in the Constitution, establishing things like free speech, protection against illegal search and seizure, the right to a trial by peers, the right to habeas corpus, protection against cruel and unusual punishment, and the guarantee of equal protection of laws.

If our elected representatives don't live up to the standards of the above, it's our fault for having sent them there, and we need to do better.

Acting as though it's impossible to improve the situation is exactly the kind of thinking that got them elected in the first place. In fact, there's a whole party dedicated to intentionally fucking up government, then saying to the electorate "vote for me if you think the government sucks!"

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the other party is dedicated to. Seems to me they're dedicated to promising good things, then making excuses about how the other party stopped them from getting them done. I'm hoping eventually they wake up and start fighting for what they supposedly believe in.

Obama Answers Question from Iran

vairetube says...

I am a farm animal. A dangerous one. I bite. Just because I haven't doesn't mean I can't.

I'm not complacent as an individual; as a citizen I will do my share, though, as it is in my interest. That's not brainwashing, thats reality. I am a willing participant because I have made the decision to be. My line to cross will be different than others, though.

If our government doesnt step up and do the right thing, than it will be up to me, and ill cross that bridge when we come to it. I hope Obama makes good on his idea of civil service programs to help pay off student loans.. I would love to do something like the Peace Corp only with more resources at my disposal.

That's really amazing.

Unfortunately, all I could think of was that it looked like a modern update to the passage in Airplane! where Ted and Elaine join the Peace Corps.

Fucktard Of The Week - Rahm Emanuel

aaronfr says...

To follow on from Diogenes:

1. The relevant section from the case law cited:

Utilizing the language of the ordinance of 1787, the 13th Amendment declares that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist. This Amendment was adopted with reference to conditions existing since the foundation of our government, and the term 'involuntary servitude' was intended to cover those forms of compulsory labor akin to African slavery which, in practical operation, would tend to produce like undesirable results. [240 U.S. 328, 333] It introduced no novel doctrine with respect of services always treated as exceptional, and certainly was not intended to interdict enforcement of those duties which individuals owe to the state, such as services in the army, militia, on the jury, etc.

That's right, the constitution and the Supreme Court both recognize that individuals have an inherent duty to the state which protects and provides for them.

2. Here's what Rahm is actually proposing:

Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They'll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we're hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities' most pressing needs.

3. Here's how Obama interprets the means of national service:

President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps.

4. If enacted, which seems unlikely, the United States would quickly become a totalitarian state much like:

Brazil
Denmark
Finalnd
Germany
Greece
Switzerland

All of which have compulsory national service.

Obama Civil Defense Plan - Mandatory Civil Service

13150 says...

From what I understand, not only is the plan almost entirely voluntary (except where it concerns education), it is also designed to give students a chance to better themselves through a college education. I can tell you with absolute certainty that if I could get a $4,000 per year tax credit toward my Master's Degree just for putting in 100 hours of service, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I'm holding out hope that the 50 hours per year required of middle- and high-schoolers will also count as an education credit, because a $12,000 education credit, coupled with continued service throughout college, would be a tremendous benefit to students who might otherwise never be able to go to college.

That said, I'm a little nervous about the service as well...I want to see what will come of it, but Obama has expressed interest in this being like Americorps or the Peace Corps...that's hardly the Hitler Youth.

I think it's important here to note that the quote does not say government. It says country.
I know it sounds naive but as a person who's volunteered a lot of my time to not just causes but services, I don't think it's such a bad idea to do all we can to encourage community service. I don't think it should be mandatory but part of me thinks that if it was, it would do this country some good.
People in this fucking country seem to be able to do nothing but complain. Sometimes I'm guilty of that too but jesus christ. Some people I know and meet are so god damn selfish that I think some mandatory service might help them see what the world is really like.
Maybe even some mandatory military service. Give these stupid fucking "patriots" a gun, put them on a plane and then see how they feel about their country and the right to dissent. Maybe if people were actually participating in the well being of their community, they might gain some respect for their fellow man. Maybe some people would see why they should have the right to question their government and why EVERYONE should have the right to speak their mind freely. Not just how that right applies to them and their ability to yell at people because their not getting everything they want.

While I agree that some form of community service would help that majority of selfish people in this country, forcing it upon them will be seen as a punishment by those who would benefit the most from the lessons it teaches and thereby negating said benefit.

I also can't agree with any mandatory military service requirements until such time that our armed forces are no longer used for illegitimate purposes.

Perhaps a better suggestion would be to add a community affairs curriculum to elementary education as a means to instill an appreciation for helping their community. There are a whole host of projects that kids and teens could do to boost their communities, and as they get older, organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Peace Corps could be suggested as options as they leave school.

Biden Spanks Right Wing Media Hack

11807 says...

>> ^mauz15:
And yet, someone just linked me to this very same video saying how after this "tough" interview it was no wonder Obama was not taking any more interviews in FL or something. The person said Biden got angry because she asked the right questions. Someone explain to me how can the 45 people who upvoted can see the bullshit but there are other people who actually think this is a defense for Mccain and a loss for Biden?

Well, it sounds like to me she's just preaching to choir. I can't see this interview converting any watchers one way or the other. It would just cement already established opinions on McCain and Obama.

It's even weirder to hear socialism as a buzzword again. Suddenly because there is international connections with a person, it makes him/her a socialist. I have a friend working with the Peace Corps. in China. Is he now a socialist? The way the term is being used you'd think we'd time warped back to the days when the government issued the "Duck & Cover" PSA's.

If redistributing wealth is socialist, then the "True Americans" best prepare to get rid of Social Security too, dooming all those who legitimately rely on it to postpone retirement or not retire all-together. Simply raising taxes here and lowering taxes there hardly qualifies as socialism compared to the literal transference of monies paid from workers sent to those retiring.

3 soldiers talk about their deployment in Iraq

legacy0100 says...

@Harsh talkers

Don't label our troops like that Chaffinch. It has a lot to do with which part of country you are from and the current situation you're in.

Some people (including 3 of my college buddies) just wanna better themselves and travel to exotic places at the same time. It's similar to volunteering for peace Corp or Christian groups as they tell you where to go and give you free training, except you get to shoot guns.

You could say that they can travel and help people without joining an army or any type of organization. Well, then how? Unless you're wealthy, I don't see a way for an individual to move into an exotic place whom speak foreign language, with limited money, and no local connections. That's why people join armies and volunteer groups.

Also volunteer groups can be just as aggressive as government Army when it comes to achieving their purpose, like spreading Christianity to local populace or giving power to indigenous people, meanwhile the regional government considers them rebels and danger to public safety. OR scientists valuing some endangered rats over starving humans, and convincing the government to prevent them from farming in the region.

Overall, ANY type of foreign intervention's outcome can result good or bad. But just because this particular time they did bad, doesn't mean you can call these people 'stupid'. Why, because they wanted to see something exotic? Be somewhere far away from home for once? Blame the government and people who agreed to goto war with Iraq (which was what, 99% of the nation after 9/11?) instead of the good people who volunteered.
