This Robot Walks, Flies, Skateboards, Slacklines

TheFreak says...

Now I'm picturing that "tube of angry bees" sound approaching as I'm hiding in the debris of a post-robot-apocalypse wasteland. The last of humanity, trying to evade the Leonardo slaughter bots just one more day.

american prison warden visits the norden in norway

SquidCap says...

USA is about punishment. Trouble with some small country: bomb it. Trouble with a larger country: economic sanctions. Trouble with crime: destroy their lives.

Nordic countries: rehabilitate so they can have a better lives and return to the tax paying, well behave folks. If it is countries, talk. Negotiate. (of course that last one is a bit different, nordic countries are VERY small so we can't just use force.) But the biggest difference is the need to punish, to make others suffer. This echoes all the way thru USA model: lose your house, fuck you, you are on your own. Get sick, lose your job end up stealing, fuck you, you made that choice.

I know criminals, hell, i am one. Prisoners do not behave badly if you keep them sane. That means giving them something meaningful to do, trust them, give them decent living. Prisons STILL frighten people. My upcoming two months sentence, damn, i haven't slept well in ages. I have done everything i could to reduce the sentence, to stay one more day out here. And i know that the place i will go is like a summer camp. Camp that i can not leave.

Guess which one works? I do have my own business in the works, i work everyday, i study, educate myself and i have full knowledge that once those 68 days are over, i can return back to regular life and continue my healthy plans (and if you wonder what i did, i am homegrower, never have hit anyone in my life, non-violent offender. My only crime is my love for weed, a substance that is going soon to be legal) I know a lot of guys that have been in prison, most of them come out better than they went in. Yes, we do have repeat offenders. That is very small percentage comparing to USA. If punishment would work, if the deterrent of longer sentences worked, there wouldn't be revolving doors. We know that there will always be small minority that will end up in prison, no matter if the punishment would be capital. Always. You have thieves in countries that chop your hands off. But if we treat instead punish, the ones that have a chance for good life, take it...

America's Test Kitchen DIY Bacon

TheFreak says...

Asian markets tend to have the best price on pork belly. I pay $1.50/lb. 200-225 is way to hot. Go lower if you can unless you really want your bacon precooked. After curing and rinsing, give it one more day in the fridge uncovered to form a sticky film, called the pelicle. This will help the bacon grab the smokey flavor. Enjoy.

Nerdrage: Mac OS X Lion rant

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Up until Lion I would completely disagree with you and say the UX of OS X is simply the best. Yes, I'm talking against Windows 7, Gnome, KDE et al. Now however, I'm starting to cast a wandering eye back towards Linux.

Windows 7 however, is a frigging awful experience any way you slice it. It's stupid little things like the alt-tab selecting whatever window is in the background when really you just want to cycle through the icons. Also, I can't believe they still haven't killed the dysfunctional bloatware ridden system tray. The retarded nanny-ware labyrinth that has to be navigated to connect to a wireless network makes my eyes bleed.

The way I'm feeling now is that all operating systems suck hard, but OS X sucks a little less, at least until Lion - which, again, is starting to suck much harder for all the reasons outlined in this video - and more.

Also, I don't give a shit about all the other "cult" crap you cite as a reason not to use an OS. I don't pick my computers based on style, other people's behaviour or religious beliefs - and IMO neither should you.

Fuck Lion. I'm waiting for OSX Direwolf.

Fuck OS X. I've had these tinboxes (aka MacBook Pro) thrust on me by my ex-employer about a year ago. My last encounter with Apple computers before that was with a Mac Classic when I was in 10th grade. So I didn't really know what I was getting into. Before that I worked for 15 years on Linux.
At first I thought "Ok, Apple, you're all about UX and intuitive design. Enlighten me! (and lets forget the abomination that was itunes for the moment)". Oh boy was I sorely disappointed. The workflow that was thrust on me by MacOS X on the GUI side rubbed me the wrong way, regardless of which aspect. So I thought "Ok, fair enough, those were the default settings. Lets change things a bit.... Uh. Wait? That half dozen scared little options is _all_ I get to fiddle with?". Trying to google for solutions was just as sobering. Apple ignoring feature requests for over 8 years, other people frustrated with the same problems I was facing and the most frequent response to valid questions on (non-Apple) help sites wasn't a "I'm sorry that's not possible" but a condescending "Why would you even think of doing that?".
I lasted for one more day after that before installing Virtualbox and running a useable environment (for me) in there.
I'm not going even to get into the hardware aspects of these machines...
So what I'm taking away from my forced encounter of the turtleneck kind is, we're getting the worst of both worlds:
a) Apple is currently as arrogant as Microsoft was in the 90s
b) Apples user/fanboy base is just as bad as the Linux crowd was in the 90s.
=> It's a cult. They are producing overpriced, mediocre machines with mediocre UI that is a far cry from the intuitiveness that is so often touted.
I'm glad some people are escaping the Jobsian reality distortion field.

Billboard Battle Over Judgment Day

Saw this the other day on the side of the bus, and my jaw dropped.

On a less serious note, these dudes are actually keeping us alive! Think about it--Joshua ben Joseph said that he'd come like a theif in the night, and that we'd know not the hour nor the day. All these yahoos are doing is scratching off one more day it could possibly happen. Keep it up, guys! Your paranoia literally sustains us all!

Liam Clancy "The Parting Glass"

calvados says...

Oh all the money that e'er I had
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
alas, it was to none but me
For all I've done for want of wit
to memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
good night and joy be with you all

Oh all the comrades that e'er I've had
they are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I've had
they would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
good night and joy be with you all

CBS: GOPs Ask Palin To Leave

Xax says...

>> ^quantumushroom:
Palin can't be any worse than Nancy Pelosi, who the taxocrats made 3rd in line for the Presidency after Bush/Cheney.
Dems are the ones scared sh-tless by Palin, as usual for all the wrong reasons. Their answer to her is to HIDE that semi-affable simpleton Biden, who better show up for the debate dressed as a mime.

First, you obviously haven't seen Palin's interviews. I don't know that there could've been a worse choice.

Second, I read/heard not that long ago that Biden's has given something like 10 times the number of interviews that Palin has since their nominations, so I don't know how you can say the Dems are hiding Biden. The only hiding going on is with Palin, and apparently for a damned good reason.

Christmas comes in just one more day, kids!!

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN: Second Thoughts About Fluoride (Science Talk Post)

rembar says...

Qruel, one week ago, I gave you an offer to step up to a challenge. I asked you to develop an argument from an article that you felt comfortable about enough to justify copying and pasting someone else's summary into the Science channel's sift talk, and I agreed to respond in kind when you had done so. I did this partly because I wanted you to recognize that you have an intellectual responsibility for arguing and defending your own opinions through elaboration beyond citation of evidence, and partly because I was quite sure (and now am almost positive) that you are so full of shit as to post about an article that you have clearly never read. It was, as Choggie so eloquently put it, a call to scholarship. I gave my challenge seven days ago, with a deadline set for five days ago. After a full week has lapsed, you failed to rise to the occasion, and you failed to demonstrate an ounce of reason or intelligence.

I chose this thread and this moment to put my foot down because, for too long, you have been allowed to spew stupidity all over my channel. I have watched you and asked you before to stop doing so. You have consistently posted bad videos and comments. You have made attacks on my intellectual, academic, and scientific abilities. It disturbs me that you have not once stopped or even hesitated on your rollercoaster ride of loudly-proclaimed militant ignorance, to the point that I fear you have had or will have a detrimental effect on the Sift, and from the looks of this thread I am not alone in that fear.

Beyond even that, you have simply failed to realize that merely parroting the words of scientists by copying and pasting their work is unacceptable when forming a scientific argument. When I confront you on points in this research, you back behind these scientists and instead attempt to incite me to attack them rather than debate you. Not only is it rather insipid, it is fundamentally intellectually dishonest. The scientists, the educated men and women who have put forth research, work, thought into their careers and chosen areas of expertise, may make their opinions known, but you have no right to lay claim to their voices and their work, nor does anyone. If one is going to put forward an argument, one must stand behind that argument with one's own mind and only use others' voices and research to supplement those arguments. Should one fail to do these things, one should be branded as an intellectual coward and a fool, and this is perhaps the most fitting description of you I can imagine.

Qruel, I gave you a challenge, and not only did you fail to meet it, you responded with more blather and more personal attacks and more linking and more hiding behind scientists' work. Perhaps one day you will be able to prove you are worth a modicum of respect. Honestly, I expect that day will be closely followed by wailing of women and gnashing of teeth and the riding of the Four Horsemen, but I'll leave the possibility open. Until then, I am not going to bother putting you in your place verbally unless I'm so inclined. You are a coward and a moron, and I have no reason to waste my time dealing with your juvenile antics.

I will continue to throw all your stupid videos and Sift Talk posts down the well so that Science can be free, and I will not feel the need to justify doing so. Any good videos or sift talks you happen to post will be allowed to remain in the Science channel, although I doubt that will happen very often if at all. Any videos or sift talks you happen to pollute will also be put under review to be sent to the chokey.

These are the first of the changes I will be making to the moderation of the Science channel. You will be dealt with further as it is seen fit. Good day.

To everyone else:
Science is at war.

Over the course of the next few weeks or months, the Science channel will be undergoing changes in moderation, setup, and control. And we will be launching the largest change in this history of the Science channel.

Science - that word's importance should carry meaning to all of us today.

We can't be consumed by petty arguments with people who have no understanding or knowledge of science anymore.

We must be united in our common interest in science.

Perhaps it's fate that today is the 6th of February, the day that the first human egg was fertilized in test tube, and that today we will once again be striving for the good of Science, not for fertilization of a single ovum - but for the fertilization of Science as a whole.

We will be fighting for our right to think, to know, to understand the world around us.

And as we begin on this day, the 6th of February will no longer be known as just one more day of the year, but as the day when the Sift declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night!

We will not vanish without a fight!

We're going to live on!

We're going to survive!

We're going to evolve!"

Today, we celebrate our Science Day!
